OpenMower - The affordable Open Source DIY Smart GPS Robotic Mower
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 чер 2024
- The Open Mower project allows you to build your own smart lawn mower robot using the Raspberry Pi and an Arduino. The robot is able to localize itself using very precise RTK GPS. As base for this project, an off-the-shelf robot mower is used. The electric components and the software are published as an open source project.
This robot lawn mower is able to record a map of your lawn and mow it automatically. All path planning and navigation is done on the robot mower directly.
If you want to build your own GPS robotic lawn mower, you can get the hardware and software on GitHub. But since this is an expensive project, I recommend to ask your questions in my Discord before you start building your own robotic lawn mower.
Since many of you asked which mower exactly I bought, it's this one:

I can't believe some of the prices scalpers are charging. $250 for an 8GB Pi 4
yeah... until your neighbors kids throw a rock or something in the path of that mower.
@@wanderingandroid At which point you respond with your Raspberry Pi control drone...
FOSS is life.
You don't know it yet, but you're actually helping to change the entire world for the better.
A bit like an open source ass wiping robot: Providing solutions to a manufactured problem.
I am excited about your project! Small suggestion for a video editing tweak - your intro music is much much louder than the voice that comes afterwards. Thank you for all the work you've put into this.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm not experienced in video editing - it's the first one I've edited myself. Glad to get some feedback on the editing style!
That's crazy, you make an outline and any areas not to go and it pretty much makes G-code for the mowers path. This seems very parallel to a computer controlled plotter, laser, or even a 3D printer nozzle moving on a first layer of a print. Really cool idea!
Give it a 3D additive printer, and it can print green grass at perfect height over the bare spots ...
@@nevisstkitts8264 Astroturf automation? NGL that would sell in places like China or Arizona!
how perfectly he goes trough all the area without leaving a gap looks so satisfying!
I love to see projects like this come to reality, thanks!
Really great work! I love how you can tell how much attention to detail and effort went into the project. Looking forward to seeing more content from you!
Hello tanjak did you build one?
Great Job! Its the mower that most people need. Looking forward to seeing more.
This is absolutely amazing and quite overdue! Top work!
This is an amazing project. I can't express enough how great this is. Well done mate.
That drone footage timelapse of it mowing is awesome!
This is the project I was waiting for - well done!
I have been hoping/dreaming for someone to create an open source mowing platform like this! I'll be watching this like a hawk for the next year.
Amazing work. Thank you! This was also on my to do list but now I will not start from scratch :) I will build one next year :)
Now that's what I'm talking about! Way to go mate! Looking forward to make one for my yard.
This is AMAZING. I can't wait to build one! 🤩
Great project! Nice to see someone build proper robotic lawnmover.
Super cool man! With some industrial suppliers and some well written instructions this lawnmower could be for anyone.
Clement, great work and I like it very much. Very likely that I will build one. I will follow your work closely. Keep it up. Thanks again.
great project! I also really enjoyed the videography-- it absolutely sold your mowing demo.
Yes! I have been thinking of doing this exact same project for *years*, but have never gotten around to it. One use case for "structured mowing" is challenging hills. Let the mower climb on lesser incline and let it descend down a steeper hill. That way it won't get stuck and dig a hole with the wheels. You could draw routes and perimeters on a map in your browser. Bring it with you on your vacation without having to install stuff (except a RTK base station). Move it it from place to place and have perfect fixed object avoidance. Now I just need to find the time to follow your plans which is a much lesser problem than starting from scratch :) I have played around with that same Ardusimple GPS before. Stupid accurate! And in my setup I had a dual gps rover setup that gives perfect heading even at stand still.
Really great work. There's a huge amount of understanding required to achieve this. Well done.
Totally awesome. I look forward to your updates! I can’t spend $900ish for the shell and motors, so I’ll be looking around for a 3d printable version of a suitable shell.
Again, great job!
BRILLIANT! Much better than the random angles the others employ. I hope you do well with this.
Incredible. This is what I've been looking for. Amazing work😎👍
Awesome! This is something I always wanted to do as well. Thanks for sharing this!
Excited to see more of this!
I can’t imagine being this smart. Super impressive!
Siiiick!! Well done Clemens! Instant sub.
Ich bin absolut begeistert. Habe Dich direkt mal abonniert Clemens. Kompetent und sympathisch… top! VG Mirko
Your mowing simulator looks really realistic. Really cool how you program the thing. Not having to dig a bunch of trenches I nthe ground like the old style that followed a line under the ground kind of an electric fence. Hope this picks up and people can help you improve it since it's n open project.
You have potential, I'm happy to be here since the beginning, suscribed!
Good luck with the project! It looks great!
This the coolest thing ever!!! Time to show the US how useful this thing is!
Subscribed!! Wooo I have been waiting for this for so long!
Amazing work! Love the attention to detail and the whole open-source approach. Probably will build one this summer if I manage to save up the resources to buy everything needed :P
My dad (me as well, probably) would freak out if he saw this thing in real life :D
I'm just learning about GPS RTK. It's fantastic!
Beautiful , thanks for sharing , thanks for making the files available.
Very good project, and a lot of hard work you did. You inspire me to build one of own.
Such awesome work! I can't wait to build one.
Great Projekt. Looking forward to see more content about this project
This is nice. When the right time comes, I will really check this out again and try to build it. It is superb. Great project!
Wow this is amazing! I was waiting for the Segway one, but this is very very interesting
That's fantastic - thanks for sharing! So much better than robot mowers available on the market in Oz!
It isnt better than the other mowers available on the market... Husqvarna made GPS perimiter mowers years ago...
That is a nice project, the robot learns from example I have some projects that do the same where I had an option for motion-by-queue actions and all AI learning but seeing it running in the backyard really creates a value project.
this is awesome, well done sir.
Actually wery nice! Congrats on that!
Amazing.
Look forward to doing this myself
It it a great projekt and a great work. I am looking forward to see more.
The best ist the teaching process so intuitiv.
Yes please. This is great. I liked the idea of automated mowing but I did not like the fact that you had to leave it out all week while it randomly mowed. This is perfect, I have have it mow for a hour or two while the kids and dog are inside. RTK GPS is amazing!
this a great! much respect for your work and your attitude towards open source, thank you :)
This is awesome great job, I will definitely be looking to do this whenever I can finally afford a house of my own
This is so smart, really cool!
Great video and nice work! It would be great if you did a diy build and showed us the full process of building one. Will be following your channel for updates!

Watch the video where he explains why existing commercial robotic mowers are not to his liking and why he started his build using one.
Looking forward for future updates regarding this project.
Great start! We ❤️ open source
Wie geil ist das denn. Ich glaube du hast hier einen Nerv getroffen. Bitte betreue das Projekt weiter :)
Super gemacht. Bin gespannt auf Fortschritte für rauhere Umgebung
Great job👍
Hope you stay tuned and let us continue to participate in your project.
I would definitely look forward to a video series about it.
Thanks in advance.
Awesome! Watching the top down view reminded me of my cnc mill doing a facing cut, while avoiding hold down clamps! Aka, your tree.
This is soo great! I look forward to checking out the git!
Awesome project! You should do more videos on how some of the modules were built (the mechanics / electronics / programming) in some kind of tutorial fashion to get more exposure for the product
Amazing stuff. I should have seen it coming, open-source is definitely the fastest way to get these things working without boundary/guide wires. The big vendors will not have the ability to put in the effort like an open-source community will. But they could and should join forces with the community and implement this solution into their product lines, rather than waste their time trying to develop their own from scratch. The idea of automower's coming with onboard API's to tie into with the open-source control software is kinda cool.
Even though I don’t have a lawn, I HAVE been waiting for this. Not entirely sure why 🤔
Really nice work. Would be interested in more details about the algorithms and hardware designs :)
Awesome work!
So cool! You're amazing!
Wow - great job!!
Sehr gute Umsetzung, endlich eine brauchbare Lösung!
Awesome project 🙂 super professional
Respekt! Sehr cooles Projekt!
Dude I’ve been trying to make my own mower for so long and there was nothing remotely close to this. Your literally pioneering the entire space
Did u make one?
I need to build one of these for my side yard. I'm tired of the neighbors bothering me when I just want to listen to podcasts and mow as fast as possible.
great project Clemens.
Holy S, this is great! Even though I don't even have a garden :D
Maybe you could get in touch with some front end dev to make an app for that, that would make it easier to monitor and setup.
Let the Open Source Fun begin!
Amazing work
Great work, man!
Great work!
This is awesome! I've always hated the random nature of moving that the big companies gives you, but this, this is good!
Bosch doesn't
The random path has some benefits that a controlled sweep does not cover
actualy, non gps robot vacs/mowers works in similar way. not many use random patterns any more, have much better logistics now.
@@c7ndk And what are those benefits?
@@RizZRizZ- the complexity to make a controlled path is way greater than letting it bounce around randomly and there will not be any noticable difference in the end except for the higher price.
running the same path over and over will also be very visible in the grass and it will be ridiculous to create setup with a controlled random path rather than just letting it bounce around as it already does
Merci Clemens !
Impressive work. Good job
This is my dream! I also want to create such robot by myself because I kinda tired to mow the grass. But also for me one of the important feature would be in such robot to have storage for grass. Sometimes you use it sometimes not
Nice project. I know a lot of of people also try to build robotic mowers with hoverboard parts. You could also drive a hoverboard mainboard from the raspberry.
have been looking into robot mowers the last weak and felt the need to just diy one myself, now I see this video and yea... I guess that is what I was searching for ;) Awesome project, will look into it and if I build one start contributing :D Thank you for making this video 👍
Thank you! Glad to have you!
Awesome project.
you're a legend.
Excellent work!
Thank you! I'm glad you like it!
Exactly what I have been looking for, keep up the great work
Well done!
Nice project man!!
This is so awesome, I’m definitely going to submit some code and try and help any way I can
Amazing job dude!!
LFG! Gonna start and contribute !
Whaaoou ! Everything is going OpenSource. 😍 Congratulation to you !
Great. I need one with a 5ft cut width on tracks for bush hogging fields.
This is a great project, you'd think by now there'd be a commercial automated lawn mower that works great. Maybe you could even sell this as a kit! Or kickstart an improved version with a single main board.
wdym? There are tons of robot mowers that works well...
Have you looked at the cost for GPS controlled mowers? They are eeeexpensive 😅
RTK GPS is really expensive, the chip alone is atleast €100,- and you need two of them
Husqvarna makes one. Ungodly expensive and it needs a buried invisible fence though.
90% of them are just money scams
A colleague and me talked about doing something like this for years but never had the time... We were into GPS, camera etc... But having it learn by using a controller is fast and smart. Hope this pans out!
many people talk, few actually do ;)
@@pietheijn-vo1gt Indeed... I'm glad some people have/take the time and make something like this happen. It feels like camera and image recognition to avoid kids toys in the yard etc could be a cool future iteration.
@@DanielLiljeberg we're in the discord talking about this constantly. We are looking at mmwave radar, ToF depth sensors and camera's for object recognition. There are many paths to take here
@@pietheijn-vo1gt Sounds awesome... I see the solution is based on a custom board that is not available for purchase yet. When it is I'll be sure to buy one. My wife has been asking me to get a robotic lawnmower for years (I guess her other robotic one... me... isn't good enough)... But I think they all suck. Burry some cable just to enable them to run around like a drunk person... Xiaomi showed of one that was base don lidarr and cameras I think that sounded like it could be cool. But I haven't seen it actually available to the public yet.
@@pietheijn-vo1gt Also, not sure how accurate the GPS is, but given that the mower i trained using the controller it might not be an issue. I remember that we were thinking of using something like low power bluetooth or something like that from a few placements around the yard to get very accurate positioning.
Nice work moe
I don't even have a lawn but this was a great video!
Super Idee! Gefällt mir :)
Great work
