    Note:
    5x
    5 is the numerical coefficient
    x is the variable.
    5x + 8 + 7x
    5x and 7x are like terms since they have the same variable, while8 is a constant number, CONSTANT NUMBERS are a number that doesnt have variables.

    quick question: how do you know to subtract the like terms as opposed to adding them together? because the original problem says 9x+7-5x+4. After you combine the like terms how do you know to subtract that? 9x-5x? why dont you just add them? im confused as to why you are subtracting 9x-5x. Like how do you know how to do that? Im trying to get my GED and really need help with this

    • @hutsonbaby2971
      @hutsonbaby2971 3 роки тому

      9x -5x you will minus because the two signs are different (9 doesn't have a sign before it which means it plus/positive "+9") lets write it this way -5x+9=4. your answer will keep the sign of the larger number

    can you please clarify how you know whether or not to subtract or add on a problem?
    for example 5y-2y+3x-8y. there is different operations and you didnt explain that, but i understand the concept of the video.

    • @Cutiepatootie4726
      @Cutiepatootie4726 3 роки тому

      3x is automatically left alone since it doesnt have any like terms. 5y - 2y= 3y. Then do 3y - 8y which is -5. That leaves you with 3x -5y which you cant solve. Im not sure if youre trying to subtract or if those r just negative and positive symbols. If youre trying to just evaluate then itd be 3x -5y.
