- When groove-metal quartet Soulfly descended on New York City's Gramercy Theatre on February 11th to play a headlining set in support of their eleventh album, 'Ritual,' Revolver's film crew was there to capture all the action. The energetic show featured the group storming through newer and classic cuts like "Dead Behind the Eyes," "Arise Again," "Eye for an Eye" and more - including the band playing frontman Max Cavalera offstage with a rousing, abbreviated cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper." I saw Max a number of times on stage (namely 2 with the Seps, 2 with Soulfly and 1 with the Cavaleras). His stage presence and charisma is out of this world. Doesn't matter if the guitar is only a prop, the man is a fucking legend and can entertain a crowd like few in the heavy metal world. And he will probably die doing it.

Last Soulfly show I went to was at Gramercy in 2014... Max's kid doesn't compare to the days of Roy, when Soulfly was a percussion based band. Rizzo has kept them alive though.
Liam Sweeney exactly, anyone can be the bassist for the band. But it takes a special kind of drummer to keep the focus of the band in time and this kid doesn’t cut it. Rizzo is a very talented musician and if he were to leave, then Soulfly would suck more than they do now. Max has slowed down a lot over the years that his guitar playing is shit and only carries it as a prop at shows. It’s pathetic and sad on what has become of them.
Ritual is amazing.

I saw them last Febuary at the Brighton Music Hall in Boston. A Killer show which was a lot of fun. I've always thought Soulfly was best when doing their goove metal. Ritual was the best Soulfly album in years. I am pleased he tours so much. We are lucky to see shows like this.

@@kotanovakota I wouldn't say that at all. Yes, the past 10 years Sepultura has been trying harder, but that's only because for the first 15 years after his departure, Max made it seem like it was easy. He had the most relevant sound during the whole new metal wave and right after that. Soulfly only started to sound stale after 2010 when prog and djent became prominent. Even so, his sound on both bands, Soulfly and CC , has historically been more impactful and more faithful to the groove/thrash/death vibes of his Sepultura era. Only with Kairos did Sepultura started catching up with that. I would put them on equal footing looking only at the present, but not historically. But I'll admit post-1996 Sepultura's music has always been deeper than Max's songs.

I've been playing for 36 years and Beneath the Remains was the first full album I ever learned. Max and Sepultura are one of the biggest reasons I am a musician. I wish I could jam with them. Hell, if he wanted to just sing, I'll play guitar for him anyday.

Dude Marc Rizzo absolutely DESTROYED this show bro. His playing on "I and I" was incredible man. Max sounds good too vocally even though I wish he was mixed in a lil louder and with a lil reverb on the mic. Great show from one of my favorite bands.
The video is great but it doesn't do them justice. This live show was SO GOOD. I'll take any chance to see them again live.

Cool video. I helped soulfly loading here in Kansas City Missouri. For this tour. I was lucky enough to have the chance to sing with Max. Eye for an eye.
Saw them few months ago in ABQ, and seeing Max with those mighty Brazilian hippie metal dreads standing in front of me on the stage is the closest to a god experience I've had. was on one foot the whole set being just fucking ragdolled and I'm 200lbs! EYE FOR AN EYE FOR AN EYE FOR AN EYE!!?¿

Everyone calls Soulfly Max's band but the reality is Marc Rizzo has carried this band for the best part of a decade. When i saw them live a few months back, Max hardly played guitar, i think at one point they just turned him down and his guitar was just on his shoulders for show. Not denying the guys legacy in the genre but it's safe to say he's miles past his best and he's a lucky man to have Rizzo in his band

Yes, but he was never a guitarist per se. Dude used to play 3 strings coz it was fun.
@@gxscore2911he played 6 string originally but he once snapped the E and B strings at the same time and instead of replacing them he left them off as he thought it looked unique and he rarely used them anyway.
Saw him a month ago with CC tribute to Arise and you're right but i think creating the riffs/music for the albums is like 75% Max. He just doesn't play live anymore.
