  • NEW DELHI: Recent reports suggest a spurt in construction activity, apparently by the Chinese or with their assistance, on Myanmar’s Coco Island that could pose a security threat to India. The island is located just 18 nautical miles off the northernmost tip of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There’s chatter that signal intelligence infrastructure on the Coco Island is being spruced up, which could be used to snoop on Indian military assets in the Bay of Bengal. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains why there’s no need to press the panic button yet and how improved infrastructure in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands can come in handy.

In 1943 Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose our first prime minister raised the flag of Independent India/Azad Hind in the Andamans. We should hold on to all of it and maybe buy back Coco Island too.

The geographical representation told the story better than even the voice content. Truly, a picture says a thousand words.

India should ask Coco Island be given back to India, Nehru gave it away to Myanmar during partition, among a 100 other stupid mistakes he made. The list of Nehru's blunders is endless. Starting from giving up Aksai Chin, Tibet, not taking Lahore and parts of Pakistan Punjab after partition when we could have, Chicken Neck problem, and this Coco Island.
Nitin please re-visit Andaman Nicobar Islands for a progress report on how the infrastructure build-up is going. We need to station more attack aircraft there and naval assets with teeth.

Thanks to Nitin Gokhale for an informative session on the importance of Myanmar’s Coco Island and its potential as a Chinese snooping post on India’s tri-service base in the Andaman Islands. While there may not be any imminent cause for alarm for the Indian Navy, the fact is that the Chinese seem to have found themselves one more coastal asset around India’s territorial waters, the others being Gwadar in Pakistan and Hambanthota in Sri Lanka. Very clearly China has more than a passing interest in India’s military capability, including its ballistic missile program. Although Coco Island is still not yet built up as a Chinese observation post, it would give them a ringside view of India’s Andaman base. India needs to maintain a friendly, working relationship with the military regime in Myanmar to preempt a Chinese contract to build a port “infrastructure project” in Myanmar with a “loan” and finagle a 99-year “lease.” Perhaps India should collaborate with Japan on joint projects in Myanmar, as it does in Sri Lanka. It’s prudent that India is also working on a joint project with Indonesia, as explained.

India should give more Military significance to these key Islands & develop them using Indian Private companies in collaboration with U.S. companies to initially develop the islands for “tourism” to finance the infrastructure that must be built up urgently with a 5 year completion plan. I am sure US “private enterprise” financing will be available for Indian private companies to build there for many Indian “ security” reasons. Of course overseen & monitored by the Indian Armed Forces. This is in keeping with my “ second China front” when trouble starts in the South Tibetan Himalayas euphemistically called by India as the India- China LAC- Indians should immediately start calling it the India- TIBET border & NOT the India China border. Tibet has been force ally & illegally occupied by China & hence our border problems in the Himalayas as a consequence.
Please don’t let China beat India to the draw once again because of India’s political lethargy on Indias sovereignty

Why would myanmar allow india to use coco island? China hold more leverage over myanmar and we can be assured that coco island is now a de facto chinese base.
Also what is that strip of land between coco island and india and belongs to whom? Lets us make sure the chinese do no repeat what they did in scs here.
