- High school lockers could soon be going the way of the marble notebook. In one school district on Long Island, they're being replaced with smart lockers. CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reports.
Whilst most schools in the UK don't have lockers we've been using smart ID cards to enter/exit rooms years now. I know a school that even uses finger print for school lunches.

In the U.S fingerprint school lunches are common. At least its common where I am in America.

As a Senior in high school here on LI it’s kinda sad seeing masterlock lockers being phased out because they feel like a staple to everyone’s high school experience, even if you didn’t you them, just their presence being there is what made it feel like a high school.

literally except at my high school there's at least 1000 lockers and not one person uses them.
This is a lot better and I wish my middle/high school had it. I still get the OG experience at the gym where I use a normal pad lock, however.
At my high school the only way to get in our school was with our school ids. If you didn’t bring them you’d have to sign in at the office and they would keep track of how many times you forgot to bring your id.
The only down side I see to this, at the moment, is kids forgetting their ids at home and not being able to get into their lockers. Or the power going out/glitching. If the power went out they wouldn’t be able to get into them and as we all know electrics aren’t always the most reliable. They may not open or lock when they are supposed too. But even with that I think this is a cool idea.

@@GodronATX If you forgot your ID too many times they mostly just give kids lunch detention where you’d have to sit at a certain table where teachers could see you and you had to check in with them. They were pretty lenient about it and I never had to worry about it.
Also most kids that forgot their IDs would just walk in the door with another student who has their ID. You only needed one to unlock the door and most kids would just yell “hold the door” and they would so you could get in.
it was the same at my school someone stole my wallet this was the first time i didn't have my id and i got detention my mom even called the day before to tell them it was stolen and they didnt care i was so mad
that's actually what you would want though, is the kids to forget it because after that one time of them not being able to get into their locker for the day, they'll make sure not to forget it again and that builds the sense of responsibility and matureness that they need. Also to your worry about the power, it's regulation for most schools to have backup generators in case of power outages which do happen occasionally so I'm sure even with that the kids would still be able to get into their lockers.
My highschool did the same. Only issur is that some people got away wearing other studen ids. Some teachers were chill and others eould get mad and send yoh to the office

Ikr. All 4 years in my high school not only did I never use my locker I never saw anyone else use theirs. Wasn’t even part of our vernacular. To be fair we were all too busy smoking in the bathroom/ trying to fuck
They don’t assign probably because it’s overcrowded and there’s not enough to go around
my school is very low budget so it’s littered and we don’t have a library (we have a tiny closet for books), we also don’t have a cafeteria and the place for nutrition break is very small, it’s about let’s say a fifth of a soccer/football field. wish i had something remotely close to an advanced school

So now all you need is a Flipper Zero ($169.00) and a few seconds with a student's ID to get complete access to their locker...as well as any other system that uses it.
Usually the "smart" option is a lot less secure.

You don’t need a flipper zero, just an rfid scanner. I’ve seen some that go for under $20 online, and if you go to a flea market or some old tech establishment you can get a decent one for pocket change
You can pick master locks in 3 seconds, so they're not secure at all.

That comment really surprised me. It makes me wonder what the city does with all the Federal and city school tax funding ! I think they said Baldwin H.S. had lockers since at least the 50's and the Junior H.S. (7th & 8th grade) always had them too. I'm convinced some sort of racket or embezzling must have been going on.

I grew up on long island. Our school had probably 2000 lockers but only like 100 kids actually used them
I only used my locker for the first year of middle school and then if you wanted one in high school, you had to sign up for it.
At mine you had to have a doctors note for one
I'm in my first year of middle school right now. At open house you can buy a used lock for $3 or a brand new lock for $6. (I got the used lock.) and you can use the same lock until you end 8th grade. The thing about that is teachers told us on the first day that locks weren't necessary and that most people just take their lock home or turn them into the office after a couple weeks. turns out it was different this year and only one person I know actually hated their lock. (However a lot of people just hated the lock in general and stopped using it.) Our generation just likes being secure I guess. Unlike yours (Mostly). And unlike you I don't think I'm going to be quitting my lock or locker anytime soon.

@@M33VR oh bro i loved my first year of middle school stuff was just so simple no drama until i reached 7th grade sadly 🥲i'm in 8th now and i'm finishing this year off strong but that's crazy y'all had to pay for lockers we got ours for free but we only used our gym lockers but i only used mine for my dance stuff like my shirts leggings and deodorant and other stuff so bcs of covid we don't use the outside lockers anymore but yeah i also hated the lockers bcs i would forget the code to mine 😭
What if you forget to bring your card? What if you lose it or someone steals it? That's a lot more likely than forgetting your code, unless you have a terrible memory.
Schools always have a master key for these things. They will just ask the person who lost it to pay to get a new one I guess
Most schools already have some form of ID issued to students. In my HS, we couldn't get into the cafeteria without swiping it. If you lose it, they can just use a master key and issue a new card.

I never used my locker due to the time in between classes being so short at 3 minutes. My siblings mentioned that they can actually break into other people's lockers by just pulling the lock really hard.
This is a great idea to use RFID cards as locker keys. Generally, they probably won't be as durable as the 60 year old lockers that came before them. But, it's a big improvement. When I was in high school, we could leave for lunch and the period was only 40 minutes. I remember dialing in my combination as fast as possible, since every minute counted.
Where im at lunch is 35 minutes 😞

My 7th grader tells me she only puts her winter coat in her locker- we are 1-1 devices they carry that all day long. She has 2 binders (am/pm) but no textbooks. If they use a textbook it is online access. I'm not sure why they even need lockers now. We had to have textbooks for every class but 5 star notebooks.

Holy s#%t I'm glad I went to this school a long time ago because the other comments complaining they never had lockers have terrible grammar and spelling.
There must have been some racket and embezzling going on in the city schools. Even with the Federal and City funding you'd think they would do some sort of auditing at one time or another. Something fishy going on for sure.

They probably werent allowed to yuse them or something because they already had lockers which they admit the students didnt use. so why spend a million dollars to make this crap? probably money laundering to chinese manufacturing.
@@Fish-cj4ub I think it said they hadn't been using those lockers was because of Covid and school closings. I visited my mother very often from late July and August to October or early November. I did see some kids at the bagel shop by the school, but the school had probably been closed for at least eighteen months prior to that so yeah, they weren't being used and once the school did open back up I'd imagine precautions didn't allow for the regular use of them. A school like that needs lockers for a nine period day; I can't imagine a kid having to shlep around all day with all books and gatherings and garments in the cold weather.

I never had a locker in middle school in Brooklyn or high school... All we had was medal detectors, x-ray baggage check machines, and soda vending machines. These kids are privileged because my sons Brooklyn's school still doesn't have lockers. These are some privileged students of all races and nationalities.

I went to this H.S. many years ago. Most of the household have hard working parents who pay very high property tax. I'm actually surprised that Baldwin got these before R.V.C which is an incorporated village. The neighborhood has nice houses and beautiful quiet streets, but the main Ave. is kind of beat up.
Its a little disrespectful to call these students "privileged" because they got an upgrade in security measures to deter school shootings and theft, something boomers didn't have to deal with as drastically as we do now, considering guns are significantly easier to get then back then. Instead of calling them privileged, why don't we appreciate Long Island for taking steps to protecting kids from shootings?
This should be the norm, not the special.

Why didn't the school show metal detectors and x-ray bag machines like every other New York inner city school throughout the 5 Boros? We get tools to prevent crime while other schools get luxury items for students... Something is not right here as it sounds like a huge waste of money and resources but it is to be used as a taking point for what makes the school better than other schools.
I went to that school and I’m glad I had those old lockers in my opinion.
That is so cool!! When I was in school for high school that I had to remembered 2 locker combinations one for my locker in the hallway and another one for P.E. I still use combination locks at the YMCA for one locker and another one for my clothes and my bag. I have different color locks one blue and the other one pink. Just liked my key chains one blue and the other one pink.
That was me in middle school but in high school everyone brought their backpacks to class

This sucks for a lot of poor neighborhoods because they can get these high tech thing is what other schools are still using the same books from 20 years ago. And the school is proud of this? Proud that they’re taking opportunities away from other kids.
They should have wasted the money on employing a person to scan every textbook over the summer break into PDF format so kids don't have to share the same textbooks and eliminate the excuses of why a child could not do the work in school or at home and would eliminate paper waste and deforestation. It would also save the children as it would solve the back issues they face when carrying heavy books around all day. IT NKT AS IF SCHOOLS UPGRADE THEIR TEXT BIOKS YEARLY AS I HAD A 2-YEAR-OLD TEXTBOOK WHE. I WAS IN SCHOOL IN THE 90S AND MY KIDS USE SIMILAR BOOKS NKW THAT ARE 10 YEARS BEHIND IN DATE.
The smart lockers is a very smart idea for renovation, but in the case a nerd or someone with straight A's gets bullied and their id card gets confiscated away from them forcefully by another student, the bullies can use the id card to access the other students locker and get access to study sheets that can be used for cheating.

Screw doing it by force. Dude, if these were employed at my HS, I'd 100% make a high-power [and thus long range, perhaps a meter or so w line of sight] RFID cloner. Pre-amp, battery, modem would fit nicely in a backpack.
I also woulda considered hacking the school's locker control sys. Likely a SCADA system. Back in the day, I alr had access to the computers that controlled my HS' security camera network. Same computers would likely control lockers.
You can break into a locker the old fashioned way. With pliers.

What happens when students inevitably lose the key or leave it at home? Or if it is stolen. The older lockers avoided these problems. I am in favor of progress but it has to make sense.

I go to this high school and I would say I like this feature but to be honest I don't use my locker.
It's far from all my classes,I only went once this year on my lunch period cause I wanted to see where it was
I had this in my middle school , 10 years ago in Michigan . They took these lockers away because it being electronic caused so many issues. These lockers also are easy to jam. If they lose power, you got to wait for each locker to be pried open by crowbar
It’s also scary to think that there will exist a command that’ll be able to pop open 1500+ lockers at the same time

I remember having my locker broken into once and that was the last time I used one I would just bring my bag with me to every class whether the teacher liked it or not
As someone who has been in the tech business for over 20 years i have to say ACS aka Access Control Systems are great. My only concern here is with any large deployments which is redundancy, verified daily backups and security. With the world we live in today and the lack of procedures done by many I wouldn't be shocked to see reports of the school being shut down due or locked out with the ACS from improper use, management and security. Some leaders push to open doors in the tech industry to lower the burdens of complexity and this will need to stop. Secure the deployment, have the system externally and internally tested by 3rd party pen testers then come up with a policy based on the highest level of security you can implement. Force everyone to follow said policy and never relax security for anyone.
Just curious, why perform a pentest against a locker access system? I think there are greater risks to a school's information systems than a loss of availability/inappropriate access to lockers.

We had lockers in high school but I dont think anyone even uses it. The lockers were inconvenient to meet up to retrieve our books, food, items by time breaks were over
Luckily my middleschool gave me the experience of lockers for all 3 years, because when I was going to my Highschool, they stopped using them entirely...
then after my freshman year, we got moved to a new building and they had no lockers at all. which was a big bummer for me, but atleast I got my 3 years with them

it’s cool but so easy to get into, smash the front and it will open, assuming they use rfid since it seemed kind of cheap for 1600 lockers you can copy that rfid and repeat it back, tools such as the flipper zero could easily get into those

There is no "key" to open the locker manually if these electronic locks fail...

most schools have back up generators for cases of lost power. most likely they would allow kids to grab their items to take home if necessary while the generators keep the locker's running.
Most of these devices, just like hotel rooms, run off batteries.

The high school I teach at in California got rid of all their lockers, and students just carry everything in backpacks to and from home. Unfortunately, all the backpacks sit all over the classroom floor so people trip over them. And ID cards are required for students to get on campus. If they lost or forgot it, they have to report to the office to get a temporary card, and they’ve got some ‘splainin’ to do. I haven’t heard of any plans to put in a new locker system. I don’t know if it’s just a district-wide policy or if it’s the same all over the state.

Seems way more pricey than good ol' keys or combination lockers. Gotta replace the reader too every few years and that co$t a few bucks. Would have been better to spend that money on supplies or more teachers.

Someone broke into my locker and stole my race shoes ( i was in cross country, race shoes were shoes you only wore for racing they were a vary thin shoe that helped keep u moving ) coach said i couldn't race😔

Apparently in the early 2000s some kid kept a gun in his locker and they permanently removed them before we even made it to high school so we carried our books everywhere

This just proves that they mismanage money, Almost a million dollars for lockers! Imagine how many students that money could have helped if used for scholarships or equipment.

Never had to use a locker ever. One school bag for "A-day" classes, one bag for "B-day" classes. No need for cramming into a tiny locker. If i had to use the lockers id be late to many classes as they were always a decent walk across campus.
I however think though, what if a student A lost an ID at school, then student B grabs their ID and opens their locker and steals stuff. Yes cameras exist but it is a possible issue. High tech doesn't mean better. Just more flaws. What if the "locker ID reader" fails? The ol' turning style lock is the best imo
