Nice - This car would definitely be improved with a longer battery range. I'd love to see the details of how you built the full pack and installed it into the car. Cheers!!
Great job izzy. Can hardly wait for more of your Videos. I have subscribed. 24 kWh would be awesome. Can you please include in your upcoming Videos where you got Battery upgrades from, How much they cost and the procedure for upgrading the Batteries
Old video, I know but it is very interesting that this seems to be about the only battery upgrade project I have been able to find. My question is that did you use original BMS and if it is sensitive to battery chemistry? I have 2014 model that just vent bellow 70% SOH after few hundred km over 160 000 km warranty limit. So real world range has dropped to about 20km which no longer is very useful. I was planning to make replacement cells from 18650 sony cells that have adequately high discharge rate. Either VTC5 (2600mAh) or VTC6 (3120mAh). I did some CAD modelin and it should be possible to make 26 pcs parallel packs (80 of them) that would be drop in replacement for original Yuasa cells. My concern is that if chemistries are close enough so that original BMS can handle protecting Sony cells...
@@grindfi what matters are voltage limits. It is not “dangerous” if those are compatible. Specifically high voltage limit. Well Sony cells have a charge cycle limitation that might make them not useful for EV battery…
@@karzza2 If you are planning to add parallel strings of batteries without a bidirectional DC-DC converter then chemistry is critical to avoid back charging and eddy currents causing serious heating.
@@robertgregory8964 i was thinking more like replacing the whole battery with different cells. Most likely I will skip that upgrade. PHEV is not really optimal for my driving profile which is mostly long stretches rather than city driving. Better upgrade to real EV once there is other than Tesla model S at used markets with four wheel drive…
@@karzza2 A PHEV battery has a very arduous task. It is smaller capacity (energy store) and yet must supply very high power for its small size. So it suffers frequent deep depth of discharge simultaneously with high ripple currents from accelerating and dynamic braking. The Outlander is a heavy vehicle which demands extra power. Moreover, dynamic braking creates a charge current beyond what most small EV batteries can tolerate for anything but very short durations. I wonder if the Outlander chews out the small Yuasa LEV40 batteries when the driver selects strong automatic braking. Unnecessary one pedal driving is a frequent extra stress by creating battery ripple currents, the driver has to remember to "feather the throttle" in order to coast. A larger battery would address all these issues.
I would love to get 86km which is just over 50 miles as the standard is about 28miles if you'r lucky. So did you replace all the battery packs as you had one on your bench? It would be nice to see a video of how you done it.
Any updates on how to recreate this upgrade. Some 3600mAh Panasonic would be real nice. Kinda a teaser if someone just shows you the end result and not the path to get their.
siema izzy , super robota, mam Leafa od nowosci (2014)i pokochalem elektryki. Teraz szukam outlandera PHEV, dołaczam do prosby o informacje jak zmodyfikowałeś oryginalna baterie. Serdecznie Pozdrawiam.
I think this would be possible using LiFePO4 prismatics of the same size/capacity. The charging requirements are compatible and LiFePO4 will last a LOT longer and deal better with heat/cool and regen.
Did any of the electronics, such as battery management system, require any change of settings or modification when the battery capacity was increased over the original capacity? It would be very encouraging if battery capacity can be simply increased and the car's control systems will recognise that increase.
Hi Thomas. Is this car with the bigger battery still in good condition? I would like to know if it is possible to do such a upgrade with a 2014 Outlander PHEV. And of course what it wil cost. Any idea?
Can you give us more info about your project? cells, size, CanBus?.... We have a Car's Workshop and some costumers want to upgrade their batteries... ;)
Are you in the UK? Can you do my car please. It is a 2015 PHEV. Full charge at the moment if 23 miles on the old battery. Battery health is perfect for car's age.
Yes, I plan to make it when I will be rebuilding it to 23,5 kWh (as now I use cheap chinese cells and I have built this as beta-prototype). So in 1 month.
Mu outlander lost like 30-50% of its cap then I drove in eco and charged. Smells burnt from the car and now it's kinda pointless using regen brake menu as it makes nearly no different. In my menu it says ev range 26km
I was always wondering if I could do this in my Peugeot Hybrid which has a very inefficient battery, old old school NIMH. Barely 1 kwh. I was wondering if I assembled a battery with it's own BMS management, but still connected it in place of the old battery, if it would work without digging into the car's ECU's. To keep the discharge and charge rate identical, but just to have extra capacity. Batteries are way cheaper than they were 10 years ago when Peugeot designed the Hybrid4. In general, upgrading the capacity but keeping the same voltage need changes to the car systems?
Why have not any one made a Emergency cell like a petrol can you can carry in your electric vehicles so if you run out of power you can plug it in and in a few minutes you can drive to safety or a charge point. Don’t say it would be DANGEROUS Because there can’t more danger than driving around with 5 Ltr of highly flammable liquid in your car?
Would you let us know how did you manage for the BMS to manage such custom cells? Did you added the same amount of cells, or did you had to rearrange them? Thanks in advance!
Panie Tomku dzien dobry z Hiszpani. Z gory dziekuje. Pozdrawiam Tomek Salmonski
I think is fake too, because in the video doesnt show the battery down and up, reconverting with 18650 its a loooooot of work, maybe with another prismatic cell or pouch cell

please do not try to mix different types of batterys with different BMS'es, this can be very dangerous

more videos please. how the car handles with the new battery. is fast chharging still working? how about the colling system?

Hi, can you tell me what manufacturer, model and capacity lithium ion cells you used to make the new pack? Panasonic 18650 2400mah cells?
Any updates Thomas would be helpful.
Has anyone tried to retrofit the 2022 Outlander phev's 20kwh pack to an older PHEV? would be a good project with "original" cells.
this I would be also interested in, as technically the cell sizes haven't really changed (18650 form factor I assume)
Any update about this.project??

Good day.
We have the 2015 Year Model.
(Finland)
Did you make the battery pack yourself or did you get a finished package ??

This is what we need more of. How many battery packs did you change.
Can you pls share how you did the upgrade and the battery suppliers details. Tks

That My question like in nissan leaf
My friend have Outlander PHEV 2014 with double battery capacity but car does not use additional capacity so it need bms modification etc

impressive
Hi you still haven't put a video of the installation
Hi, could you make a video about method to conect the additional battery to existing badettery. Thanks.
I am looking to do this project too I would like to see the steps?

Up
Hi how is the car now no new video on mitsubishi phev
Can this be commercialized with Mitshubishi backing? Would be open to introduce this to the European market.
Conseguiste alguna info?
Hi , I have a outlander phev 2015 , can you help me please about more battery, because my car driver only 33 km electricity
can you make a video on how you modified the original battery?

Izzygrip Sunheatstop that would be awesome. Thanks.
Fantastic! How´s the build video coming? Where do you place the battery physically in the car? Are you in Sweden or Poland?
How are the bigger batteries cooled? Will it be safe?

Cześć. Możesz podać przyblizone koszty.
Maybe a ~30kWh pack when 4680 cells are available widely?
How things going now. Is it everythink Ok? With car? Battery? Range?

Hello Izzy Could I got an offer for an uppgrading of my 2016 phev if I come down to you reg hans
hans larson im down With that to!
where did you buy that battery
Hi,
how did the larger battery function in the long run?
Hey, are there some Infos how you do that or something else ?
How did you do it ?
How much it costs this battery change?
Is it possible to do this to a Volkswagen Passat GTE?
Should be possible. But you can use regular NCM cells with a higher capacity. For ex. 53Ah. Regular cells have about 25 or 37 Ah i think.
any chance you can share where you bought the batteries and ideally the full process for installation please?
The company he works for sells them... ;)
Seems fake to me, the wirings are thin and maybe possibly only work with e-bikes.
I think is fake too, because in the video doesnt show the battery down and up, reconverting with 18650 its a loooooot of work, maybe with another prismatic cell or pouch cell
Witam Panie Tomku
Jak się sprawdza bateria ?
Where can we get this battery?
how and where does it connect?
Panie! A to trudne jest taki upgrade?? :)
Fake!! This does not work without changing ECU reprogramming.

Where did u buy those new batteries? What is the price ?
