CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Schindler (Liam Neeson) makes his presence, and stature, known at a nightclub while introducing himself to various S.S. members.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler, a German businessman in Poland who sees an opportunity to make money from the Nazis' rise to power. He starts a company to make cookware and utensils, using flattery and bribes to win military contracts, and brings in accountant and financier Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) to help run the factory. By staffing his plant with Jews who've been herded into Krakow's ghetto by Nazi troops, Schindler has a dependable unpaid labor force. For Stern, a job in a war-related plant could mean survival for himself and the other Jews working for Schindler. However, in 1942, all of Krakow's Jews are assigned to the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, overseen by Commandant Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes), an embittered alcoholic who occasionally shoots prisoners from his balcony. Schindler arranges to continue using Polish Jews in his plant, but, as he sees what is happening to his employees, he begins to develop a conscience. He realizes that his factory (now refitted to manufacture ammunition) is the only thing preventing his staff from being shipped to the death camps. Soon Schindler demands more workers and starts bribing Nazi leaders to keep Jews on his employee lists and out of the camps. By the time Germany falls to the allies, Schindler has lost his entire fortune -- and saved 1,100 people from likely death. Schindler's List was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won seven, including Best Picture and a long-coveted Best Director for Spielberg, and it quickly gained praise as one of the finest American movies about the Holocaust.

that's not socials skills at all, actually "buying" skills
social skills ,but some social skills are created by desperation... this would be one example...
You mean a specific set of skills?
Whatever else you can say about Oskar, the man was a smooth player.
Its a miracle what God can do, he can use evil for good
Amen! Can I get a witness. He knew how to play these people like he's in a High End Chess Game. I also loved how he got himself ready for the evening with his Suit, Cufflinks and "Money". He knew how to win them over even before talking to Itsak Stern.
Imagine being so charismatic, that you are cast in this role. "Liam, we need you to be the most charming person ever and we thought you were perfect for the part....."

All you need is money and balls
+tdevil101 Pretty much balls. Money too but I think the money that was in Oskars pocket that day was the very last of what he had.
You do..INVOKE the power..there is nothing ANYONE has that you cannot obtain. If you are NOT actively engaged in getting what you want, you DON'T really want it...
All you need isn't money but a particular set of skills
I like your thinking...
Best introduction to a main character that I've seen. I wish more films can do this. When you introduce a character, you should set them up as someone you're interested with. You have to convince the audience to follow these people. This film manages to get tell you who this person is and how he thinks. It show's you his goals and what he's after in only a few shots.
looking back on it, this reminds me so much of Cary Grant's introduction in Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious". It just runs a touch smoother, though. Still, it's interesting to see Spielberg's influences still make their way into all of his films.
+arthousefanatic Very well said!
+arthousefanatic this of course implies that you're supposed to be infatuated with the MC of course.

The close-up of him holding the cigarette whilst he spares a compassionate smile for a bored damsel is probably one of my most favourite scenes in cinematography.

@@ericlify You are right! And it is not only "a bored damsel" ( like Vin 206151 wrote)but a young Polish woman who is forced prostituting herself that she and her family could survive under the cruel German occupation!
Compassionate? He is planning everything. She wants his attention
@@darthinvader1970 same i come here for the same.
Compassionate is wrong in my opinion. That shot was designed to show that Schindler was a womaniser. It’s a lascivious look.

Here, take you dislike good man
Such an intelligent line when he says "You tell them they are from me" and sums up perfectly how well Oscar plays the game, if he had told the waiter to tell the officers that there were sent by Oscar Schindler they wouldnt have known who he was and so possibly declined the offer. But by withholding his name Oscar creates an air of mystery and thus drawing his target closer to him, all confirmed when the one officer tells the other to "find out who he is" and thus the trap is sprung.
Pre-Anime Age men were something else
@@phpeon9282 Bro what
@@phpeon9282 ikr bruh fr
I like to think it wasn't to create mystery for the officers but it is a line directed simply at the audience who were expecting to hear a name.
The way Spielberg shoots this scene is masterful. Look in particular at the shot from 0:57-1:40 and how your attention is drawn through all parts of the frame in sequence. The camera essentially only rotates 90 degrees throughout the whole shot and I counted eight different focal points, or "shots" within that one shot. Hardly any mainstream director shoots like this anymore, with that kind of attention to detail and drama by changing the composition of the frame.
Not only this scene, this entire movie has many examples of economic visual storytelling, as well as lyrical editing.
I wish Im talented as steven spielberg 😞
Attention to detail!
How do you count shots? Pls explain how. I wanna be able to do it myself
@mattaddison19 Seems like you endulged a little too much in the bitterness and, just like Starbucks, you try to cover it up with the sweetness of looking down on someone you don't even know...
Liam Neeson's glare at the crowd slowly turning the stare to the Nazis being photographed as he stylishly smokes his cigarette... Top Marks! Elegance, Inside-Intensity and Style right there!
1:50 Schindler must be paying the photographer to take an unexpected picture of him with the colonel. I never noticed that until now!

50 RM (Reichsmark) was about an average weeks salary for a normal blue collar Worker in that Time.
Schindler probably spent just about all he had to schmooze them. It paid off. If it had not he was going back to Germany broke.
The base pay for a German Army (Heer) private was 35 RM a month, there may have been extra pay for various technical specialisations etc. However, it is likely that food and accommodation was free.
