It merits this kind of attention and celebration my friend. When it was first released I thought it was one of those pompous self effacing movie of Kamal. The note and more I revisited its narrative there are so many layers it unfolds. The many faces of an Indian during and post the Gandhian era and the impact of the Gandhian principles of global inclusivity and humanity and also gets to see the extreme views of the pro Hindu outfits and Sai ga between these extremes. The tumult of emotions the character of Saket Ram no other actor can capture like the Kamal has captured. The period looks, the depth of characterisation, the performances, cast and crew and the technical work and the whole imaginative story is top class. I can go on and on
I loved 'Hey Ram' when I first saw it and it's so refreshing to hear you highlight the merits of the film with so much enthusiasm. I wish Kamal's classics are preserved for future audience. Even now I can't get to watch his classics enough. I can't find Thevar Magan in You Tube for instance.
Hey Ram !! This movie had the guts to use the canvas to express the thought of a extremely creative writing yet compelling the audience to have audacity to question the juxtaposition saketh ram always is put in or seems to get into ! It's a full circle of emotions that we cherish with the characters that are portrayed in this movie.
I just saw Hey Ram again and noticed this - in the first scene we are told Saket Ram always stayed in the dark but Gandhiji always wanted lights on even at night. Cut to the last scene, where the credits roll, the main wall of Saket Ram's room has a big painting of Gandhi on it, which is actually painted on the windows and because of the transformation he went through, always had his eyes on Gandhiji and never opened the windows. I notice something new everytime i watch this movie.
This movie is a mystery in itself...each time you watch it you find a new story unfolding and a new meaning to an already established character....you need to decode this movie to fully understand it....
After the video, I actually went and saw hey ram again but this time with this video in mind. And here's what I think about the 1st Q. This is a story we see is the recollected memory of an old man. That probably explains the broken pieces and lose connections. This is what I think. We don't see a narration but a bunch of memories An old man who is scarred by his past. Once the grandson mentions about the story, he starts recollecting that life of his. Everything you said now makes more sense like how Lalwani and Amjad suddenly appear, how one talk with abhyankar changed him, how only one 2min talk resolved the fight between the mob and Gandhi, especially the hallucinations which still taunts him from the Calcutta incident. I believe Ram's character does go through an arc, but what we see are broken memories!
U gave me the version of hey ram that I couldn’t seem to get. I see everywhere people celebrating the movie and I watched it again and again and I just couldn’t see through Kamal’s love for his art. Kudos to you sir. Thank you very much for making such an amazing video. If atleast 10% people saw Kamal’s movies and put that effort to understand his art we would have celebrated Kamal 20years before cos he deserves it
One film which is an anyday reference to screenwriting n film making. Multi linguistic was one another reason for film barely accepted by the masses. BR my dear sir, you are astonishingly amazing in breakdown of scenes n linking it... Elephant scene has 2 sides of Kamal the angry young man in Kolkata streets and a composed man in home. I don't know if UA-cam has a video expiry if so kindly post in some other platform too so that my son and his children can also watch this depiction of the film. Simply mind boggling. Hey Raaaaaam...
I think the reason he stays in darkness is not because of aparna death or his burden of not apologizing to Gandhi before his death. I think its because of the murders he did the night aparna died, especially after the Blind girl’s grandfather.. Saket Ram goes mad after that and hates light and prefers to stay in darkness like the blind girl. This movie keeps on giving new understanding after every watch.. A real legend KAMAL ❤️
I don't think Saket Ram being present at the sight of Gandhi's assassination is a hallucination or imagination because Saket Ram had one of Gandhi's slippers with him, the one slipper he took from the sight. We even see Raam's grandson giving this slipper to Gandhi's grandson at the very end.
Well, when Vasundara Das' character asks Saket if he's read My Experiments With Truth, he says he doesn't like FICTION. This was (and still is) a very brave statement to make - Calling Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography a work of fiction. Saket never says that he doesnt like biographies.
Would like to thank you for revisiting this Cult Classic movie from Kamal Hassan's Repertoire!!! Stories Narrated by more than one Unreliable Narrators (which in this movie is by Character Saket Ram & his Grandson) have being done very few times in the history of cinema & what Hey Ram achieves so poignantly is narrate a story visually from the mind of a Protagonist who is suffering from the Psychological condition of PTSD.. The depiction & Resurgence of PTSD resulting in the journey of this traumatized mind of Saket Ram (Saket is a sanskrit word equivalent for Ayodhya I.e birth place for Mythological God "Ram" in Ancient literary work Ramayana by Sage Valmiki) is illustrated throughout the movie in the form of Hallucinations & Delusions. The Dusshera scene is a testament to same where first the Burning of Ravana's Statue is superb allegory with Ramayana & Intoxication makes his mind draw parallels between making love to his wife & carry on his self destructive mission on Assasinating Gandhi that would help him avenge his first wife's death & his Right Wing Political Ideologies.. The background score in Dusshera scene where Saket Ram is an inebriated state also is inspired German composer Wagner who was Hitler's favourite & reason being that Hitler's Beer Hall speeches were foundation of Nazi Movement gaining foothold before the eventual coup.. In Hindu Traditions there are four stages in every human's life.. 1. Brahmacharya (student) 2. Grihastha (Householder) 3. Vanaprashtha (Retired) 4. Sannyasa (Renunciate) This is superbly showcased in the scene where Sakey cuts his hair & takes a dip in pond in Holy City of Varanasi cleansing himself of all worldly deeds & also suggesting that he is ready to leave all.his familial relations & turn Sanyasi.. Saket Ram's Political Ideologies are also conveyed with many subtexts like where Gandhi is Nourishing Green Plants (Symbolism indicating particular community) that shows some bias .. The scene where Hindu Swastika with a background in "Green" Color transforming to German Swastika (Red Background) as made famous by Nazi's indicating Third- Reich like Fanaticism intended to wipe out people people of a certain community like Hilter's Extermination of Jews.. The German Swastika later also transforms into a Lotus Shaped Figure which again has a subtext which I leave for you to decipher.. I am mentioning all this to only illustrate the dense screenplay, multiple themes that has being showcased & genius storyteller Kamal is & nothing else!!! I would like to end by mentioning one of my favorite scene/dialog in the movie between Gandhiji & Saket Ram where Gandhi says "Most Mahatma's don't admit they are one.. Do you think Ram, I' m a Mahatma".. Ram replies :- "You will deny it if I say you are.. So I Shall deny you another Denial "..

The horse killing is fabulous. WHilst the Horses around him are blindfolded, Saket wants to witness the reality of the killing, but as is in his nature, he cant help but flinching when the gun is shot. Showing his confusion and turmoil. For me the tornado signifies this inner turmoil inside him. One can even hear the wind at the interval scene.

I understand the raja asking to blindfold the horses differently. He puts down a horse because it's no use to him. And don't want other horses to see it because he still has a purpose for them. Same way he is going to ignore abhayankar and want Kamal to get on with killing gandhi
Yes this is exactly what I felt too. That Abhyankar and Saket Ram are just as disposable as the horse but are blindfolded to see what is really happening.

Hi Mr. Rangan... In my opinion, he not being a good husband and a bad father is also a reference to the Ramayana where Rama isn't a good husband or a good father!
The sign that he may not have been in the Assassination site is when the title Hey Ram isn't said by Gandhi. So it's a fragment of reality, maybe he was there and Gandhi never said the famous last words. Maybe he wasn't there but Gandhi may or maynot have said it. It's just so intricate and layered
What a shame that we are finding the beauty of this film and Anbe Sivam many years after it released. I guess same will happen to Vishwaroopam 2 some years later
I loved Heyram and AnbeShivam when it was released itself. I am such a huge kamal fan that I took a flight to different city so that I can watch Vishwaroopam 2 FDFS. Vishwaroopam 2 is one of the worst movie Kamal haasan has ever done in last 30 years. Vishwaroopam 2 is not a wine which gets better with age for sure.
Piano is a symbol of Hey ram's psyche. It ties together his character arc. First it establishes the friendship with Amjad khan and Laalvani. Then it establishes the intimacy between him and his wife. And then the hatred and violence in the rape scene. Finally we see the piano falling and crashing...symbolising Ram's descent into darkness..His friendship towards Amjad will become a hatred of muslims, the intimacy with rani Mukherjee is replaced by the animalistic sex with mythili...and then the violence experienced by Ram is reflected in his own violent actions. And like BR said, at the interval scene, he cannot play the piano like before, instead he plays dark singular notes, signifying his transformation into this beast consumed by hatred
I am kind of disconnected with br when he is interpreting this as a blabbering of a hallucinating mad man. there is definitely a clear mark and a reason for hallucination of Ram. for me there are two major hallucination. one after aparna's horrific murder, a clear sign of a person suffering form PTSD. next when he hallucinates his gun shooting when he was in bed with mythili. the second hallucination part for me is not a hallucination but more of what kamal feels in his mind. it seems Ram treats mythili as an object, no better than a gun, an object used to quench his Animalistic instincts. Much like how religious fundamentalists believes the role of women should be. unlike BR i think there is a beautiful character arc for Ram, Then how can you explain the transformation from him being on the path to kill Gandhi to him becoming a Gandhian himself. And the grandson's unreliable narrator theory too doesn't satisfy, the story is so incredible to believe and that's why he says it (pretty straightforward).
@8:03 serioisly?? BR , Introducing Saket to that Maharaja is supported by two meetings - firstly the day after the riots, secondly when Saket ram comes back to Calcutta a year later and meets with Abhyankar and they might end up having a long conversation and only after that Saket's hatred towards Gandhi must have increased and then Abhyankar introduced Saket to the Maharaja as Saket can be really useful for their mission to kill Gandhi.
Hey BR, from past 6 months, I have seen many of your videos on film companion. Why don't you make one video about your journey. From when onwards you started reviewing the movies and taking film personalities Interviews?
Do you think the film has anything to say about ‘noble lies’. I mean, he finds realisation and solace through the things which are not completely true. I think this an implication that the truth(one of the main principles of Gandhi) is too ambiguous and abstract which makes it paradoxically dangerous. #AskBR
My view was the only time ram made love with mythili was during the isayil thodangudhamma song. He had the arrogance n anger when he made love and that's why his son was like that. His son was the Reflection of that arrogance and not coz he was bad to his wife n son
The horse might be used like a metaphor. As long as it's useful to the king it's there once it's no more of use he kills it. So it's life is just so dependent on it's master & it has no agency. Is it what not happening with kamals character too?
The maharaja asking the other horses to be blindfolded before mercy killing abhyankar's horse metaphorically shows the right's censorship within the society - in that way, the maharaja's characteristic becomes more justified than what BR explained.
I disagree with some of the initial opinions about Ram's "flawed" mind. . Hallucinations are part of this character due to his PTSD. His negative thinking to bringing it into a positive connotation and thats what makes this character real. This s how we are in real lives too. The story of him meeting his friends in towns he has been is simply to move the story along. Surely we cant draw out every town we've been in when describing key events in our lives. He is in love with someone else even when he marries someone else. That is part of his life and a necessary side to his character where emotions again can get the better of him. He needed to have a wife at first who dies a gory death as that is what fuels his anger. Every character, every scene and every dialogue lent its way to the storyline. The fact about his grandson doubting it is fine as a new generational sceptic,, but theres no place where it shows as if SakethRam doubts it. The mind works exactly that way metamorphosing our trauma into reality and thats the beauty of how PTSD has been depicted. Shriram abhyankar does not randomly take him to the Rajah, there is a scene of how they fall into an introduction that explains what he sees in SakethRam to consider him a worthy ally in their agenda. I am surprised you couldnt see the connections in each scene and how every little thing played an important role I know you got there eventually but even your initial confusion is not confusing to other viewers. It is a alternate and perfectly plausible story around Gandhi's assassination and one man's journey in how he viewed Gandhism. This is one of the best movies ever made anywhere in the world.
The reference of saket rams son not caring for his father but his grandson caring for his grandpa is a parallel real life to relationship between Gandhiji's first son and Gandhi.

Lol..both bullshit propoganda films. Glad that the Tamil society rejected these films.
@@chandrasekaranj1041 no. People have accepted it now
I loved Heyram and AnbeShivam when it was released itself.
Nahi yaar
Vishwaroopam 2 was a horrible movie
Vishwaroopam part 1 was great though
Vaa thalaivaa enga ponae ivalovu naal
The eleventh minute is pure gold BR
Most awaited askbr session
Hey Ram is the best scene of Indian cinema. Period.
Rally thats a good answer that audience never ready
@8:03 serioisly?? BR , Introducing Saket to that Maharaja is supported by two meetings - firstly the day after the riots, secondly when Saket ram comes back to Calcutta a year later and meets with Abhyankar and they might end up having a long conversation and only after that Saket's hatred towards Gandhi must have increased and then Abhyankar introduced Saket to the Maharaja as Saket can be really useful for their mission to kill Gandhi.
3:53 No, he also read the book given to him that took him in that specific idea.
#AskBR
Hey ram was great experiment of Indian cinema it should be on streaming on digital platform...... Sanjay waghule..
Best Indian movie!!
With just 4 questions u have addressed u every anticipated questions gr8..
Excellent Analysis. 👍🏻
30:00 just a pure truth😒 but it shame to accept
Great breakdown!
You also have to do analysis on Mumbai Express?? It's an underrated gem.
One of the best black comedies
@@sricharan7829 yes very true
Minor correction. It was not L Vaidyanathan. It was L Subramaniam, the Violinst
thank you very much for this video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My view was the only time ram made love with mythili was during the isayil thodangudhamma song. He had the arrogance n anger when he made love and that's why his son was like that. His son was the Reflection of that arrogance and not coz he was bad to his wife n son
I would love to watch #AskBR on #AnbeSivam
What a movie yaar
Amazing !
Major plot and basic idea adopted in English Patient movie
Do an #AskBR on Anniyan movie
It was L.Subramaniam who was initially booked and not his brother L.Vaidhyanathan.
You made a mistake just before 15:00,saket ram puts the Toe ring or metti on mythilys hand and not aparna's.
Any other classic movie reviews by BR?
please help me with the link.
The horse might be used like a metaphor. As long as it's useful to the king it's there once it's no more of use he kills it. So it's life is just so dependent on it's master & it has no agency. Is it what not happening with kamals character too?
Excellent
Sir have you ecer interviewed kamal hassan sir bcose this things youre saying make me to blow my mind
Great movie
Kamal hasan is the GREATEST INDIAN ACTOR EVER AND DARE I SAY HE'S THE GREATEST INDIAN FILMMAKER
Unfortunately Tamil Audience only want to see Rajini Vijay Ajith Routine Masala Movies in Theatres and not Classic Kamal Movies. HOLY SHIT
Can you do one on 'paradise'?
It's one of the greatest movies ever made not only Indian movie.
And yes I am from Bombay and KAMAL HASAN MADE SRK LOOK VERY MEDIOCRE.
l subramAmaniam right? not vaidyanathan
yep...thats a rare slip but understandable
What Dr ambedkar wrote about Gandhi ? Plzz tell me .
I have seen the movie 7 to 8 times I didn't get even 10 percent
Learned more abt the movie
The maharaja asking the other horses to be blindfolded before mercy killing abhyankar's horse metaphorically shows the right's censorship within the society - in that way, the maharaja's characteristic becomes more justified than what BR explained.
can we please get a review on sinamkol?
