Such an amazing documentary and so aptly named. Coming back to the Goddess and Great Mother is very much an act of remembering something that has been forgotten over the centuries. I am a born again "pagan". The seeds of the GREAT MOTHER had been sown in our hearts from the beginning of time but we had been colonized by Christianity...and we were made to forget. @@cody42693 I don’t really get what you’re trying to say, the time that I think you’re talking about does define Christianity as a whole. The Catholic Church misrepresented our people and committed acts that proved that they weren’t even believers in the true laws of it. Just because a faction of the religion was miss using the name for their benefit doesn’t mean Christianity as a whole was wrong. For example, ISIS used the Muslim religion as a cop out as there reasoning to take over and unify the people in the area. But if you look at what they do it doesn’t match up with the religion
Many people especially women are just ridiculous. Do you know what caused women to sleep in the first place? Then how are you sure it won’t happen again??
+Rita W Me to Rita, me to. I've tried getting people understand what it means, but they don't of course. They think it mean the women dominate society and men. What they fail to understand is that women are in fact superior. They are sacred, they are creators. But in this case, this was about the divine feminine, not female dominance over men, though it may seem that way.
Opps to you, the EGG is the REPRODUCTIVE cell, the sperm is NOT. YOU are CREATED because of your Mother, not your father. "If Women were superior then men would not exist"... Ummm, ok. maybe that weird logic of yours makes sense to you... but not to anyone else. Homework comes BEFORE preaching!
Well, gender equality is regarding others as people, rather than as men or women. It is not to do with the physical and emotional (When these get brought into it, it doesn't work out.), but the intellectual and spiritual. One also wouldn't know how it really is to be the opposite gender.
Don't get too dreamy about the past, and realize that while this documentary is very spiritually uplifting, there's a lot of historical revisionism here. This isn't a history documentary. The world we live in now is not as bad as people often want to make it out to be. For example, the fact that we even have computers and internet access, upon which we are able to view this video and have this conversation, is one good thing. Right? It was made decades ago, but could have premiered last week. Its themes and messages of reviving reverence for the Goddess/Mother Earth and warnings about the imbalance and destruction that will happen if we don't are eerily relevant. Everyone needs to see this documentary, and its follow-up films, "The Burning Times" and "Full Circle".
@@user-htsjp This documentary celebrates the goddess suppressed for two centuries - but powerful and revered for multiple centuries before that right round the world. Where is the father? the father is the Dagda, who tried to help his son Oengus find his true love, or the Korean father god who when his son had done his work on earth, congratulated him on creating a Golden Age, then brought him back to Heaven. There are many loving father gods in the wondrous variety of polytheistic myths.
This three-part series, but especially this first documentary, will always hold a special spot in my heart. I discovered it in 2016 and it gave me the courage that year to come out of the broom closet to myself and my family, who accepted my beliefs, thankfully. And every time I watch this, I'm strengthened in my faith as a Pagan. It makes me want to get involved with local groups, both like the one featured around the kitchen table in this documentary, people who come together to discuss spirituality, and groups which strive to bring about political and environmental changes that will benefit Mother Earth and all Her children. Also, I absolutely adore the music in this and wish it was released as an album. And the narrator's voice is one of the most soothing I've ever heard. Blessed be.
I'm glad to hear you came out and all was accepted. How long have you been practicing? I personally have yet to come out except to really close friends, but I think my family is kind of just realizing it slowly as the years go by. Especially considering how much Goddess themes, Paganism, and witchcraft have been popular and more mainstream lately.
@@cody42693 I've been practicing out of the broom closet since 2016. But also, now that I know what Paganism is, I was doing lots of Pagan practices before I knew they had names, and so were my family even though they don't classify themselves as Pagan. Kitchen witchery, for instance. My mom, grandma, and aunts always taught me to put love and care into the food I made, that it wasn't just about the physical ingredients. Or me being drawn to stones or little sticks I would find while out on walks. I'd pick them up and fiddle with them, since they just felt "nice" to hold (I didn't have any other word for it). And feeling closest to the divine while out in nature. I wish you well on your journey and hope your family is accepting if/when you decide to come out to them. Blessed be.
@@AliciaNyblade I 100% relate to everything you say. I've been practicing since 2011 myself. It's nice to hear from others how much happiness and purpose it has brought them. I'm kinda used to practicing in secret, but I suppose in time it'll plainly reveal itself. I've become less and less secretive, like having my altar permanently out in my room. Anyway, blessed be and merry part, Sister. I hope your journey continues to be spiritually fruitful. )O( ❤
I can't believe that it's been 26 years already since this. And while progress is slowly being made, the resistance against it is increasing and becoming more violent. We as human beings are really at a turning point in our existence - we will either go exinct in very short order, or we will have an opening of the mind that will embrace all.
I hope it's the "opening of the mind" that wins. Humans have been through scrapes before--many of which are set up for us by ourselves or previous generations--and human kindness and compassion has always triumphed in the end. Gods willing, this will be the same. + )O(
For me, this documentary was very powerful; it spoke to my own personal realization of the ancient energy that Goddess holds. She has revealed Herself to me in so many ways: Mother Earth, Healer, Counselor, and Guide to the Dead. I find myself wanting to be Her, desiring to be all that I can be, as a woman, in a male-dominated society.
You are still a reflection of her. I'm male as well and I assume you are saying this from a male perspective. I personally believe all of us have the divine masculine and feminine in us in a sort of energetic sense. Your wording was a little confusing, so if you actually meant that from the perspective of a woman, I apologize. I assume you are speaking as a guy fascinated with the ideology around the Goddess just as I am, though.
I remember first seeing this in 2004, in Goddess History class, and revisited it in the 'Witch History' at college. LOVE IT! It was the first time I had taken on the challenge going past the history taught, and reaffirming so much I have found while living overseas and with the type of family my mother's family matriarchs came from. It was the first time I had something more than what I felt, finding I wasn't the only one. :) Fantastic experiences.
As a child around the age of six to seven every night I would start waking up and I would hear someone talking to me I was told during these nights to call God Mom and to acknowledge Jesus but to follow the mother. Though in time I have forgotten about her and not long after I started seeing people who knew of a motherly figure as God and others have had dreams of her and then I started to remember her again, someone help me to find more out about this I acquired a book known as AllatRa, Allat meaning All that, I still read the Bible to help me find answers to certain questions I have but sometimes I pray to her and I found many things come true when I pray to her.
Blessed Be to my fellow Pagans, Wiccans, Goddess Worshippers, and so forth! No matter what name we use to honor her, may the Great Mother bless us all )O(
Agreed. As a kid of the '90s, I remember this recent reawakening to Mother Earth very well. It wasn't perfect, of course: A lot of it got commercialized into the "'Save the rainforest!' craze", especially aimed at my generation, and solving environmental issues were often presented as personal responsibility rather than holding corporations accountable. But still, it was a start, and the fact that we're waking up even more to what must be done now fills me with hope. It's both nostalgic and new and, being 32 as of 2020, I hope I live to see at least some of the positive changes this enlightenment can bring about. Blessed be.
It's nice to have this alternative view of history rather than the usual spoon-fed 'accepted' archeological tripe of everything being male dominance. This documentary is truth.
Hear, hear! To people who are like, "This is revisionist history!", I'm like, "Revised from what? Oh, yeah--from dudes assuming they've always been in charge and that patriarchy is the 'natural order' of things."
It is true that history is too often told through a Male lens but these documentaries often make very inaccurate statements, just seem to make things up, or statethe hints as fact that they have no way of knowing
#Thank you Ladies for a beautiful video. I pray that you are ALL keeping very well. Much love to all. I Am Stephany Fay-Mary Magdalene-Isis-The Holy Spirit.
[ENG 156, Echano] I appreciate how this documentary portrays and extends an understanding of feminist spirituality and women's culture. What I like most about this documentary was the act of women gathered in a social setting sharing knowledge about ancient goddesses and personal experiences relating to their femininity. They celebrate womanhood, and yet the oppression of women within the complexity of patriarchy is never out of sight. They discussed their conditions and acknowledged that patriarchy has something to do with it but they did not resort in putting the blame on men and even laid out solutions to make the needed changes in the society.
Given their ages and the when this video was made, I knew some of them I was watching speak were no longer here. Are those the only two? It did make me a little sad to realize it.
Thank you so much for uploading this great documentation! ... Sad - but true - it is more elementary than ever for our current time with climate change and pandemics and so on ...
so nice, in the midst of this corona virus, and the research, i needed this to ground me, ... so well done thank you..... We need to support each other, and keep the Mother Earth/Gaia alive in us all
I wanted to encounter a more broader aspect of this, because there is soooooo much to divulge here. I guess an hour wouldn't be sufficient for this topic. A Goddess is in fact everything nurturing. Creating things into existence, healing, etc. But there is much more to this diety than just meets the eye. I need to hear from an Alkebulanean in order to TRULY dig deep into this topic. I cannot relate because this is from a European and Western perspective, what about digging deeper into Indian culture, African Culture, and Asian Culture- so many unmentioned hidden gems from the Mother Goddess are found there as well.
The importance of the message contained in this presentation cannot be overestimated! Wisdom is inherent in women, in their natiral state. It must be said, women have not lived in a natural world for a few millennia now. Their fragmentation has been a loss that can no longer be sustained. Men must assist if they wish to live in a sane world.
[ENG 156, Bueno] I love the women convening to talk about their spirituality, and to share with each other knowledge and thoughts without prejudice, which I feel is reflective of how communal and nurturing life would be if we would just listen to that connection... the women acknowledge each other in a collective rather than divisive sense, even when they differ in experience. I also like how their discussion is not misandric/extremes (man-hate) which brings to light what the nature of goddess worship is like, and what the reality of acknowledging the goddess (and consequently, acknowledging the woman) will bring. The video itself provides a clear narrative of the historical accounts concerning goddesses and woman/female figures in different belief systems. I liked learning about the developments that led to what the world is today that makes all of this seem like a weird mix of reality and myth. I'd like to watch more videos like this and learn about female figures in mythology and how they have been "translated" or filtered over time.
[ENG 156, Inciso] the women in this video are simply phenomenal. Their insights alone remind me how great and beautiful it is to be a woman. What makes it more special is how this beauty transcends that of the physical and the tangible; it speaks of the very soul of what it means to be beings that have graced this earth with not just intellect but also heart. Another thing is how this video simply made me relearn how to love my femininity without the lens of patriarchy and it also gave an explanation as to why I deeply love nature and its creations. Would definitely watch more documentaries similar to this.
Or,....WE didn't forget. Some believe we are animals. Our intellect just an evolutionary step in our animal development. Some of us remember we are a reflection an extension of the Creator. Who created animals and us. And in us, an ability to recognize and acknowledge our origin, (Creator) and identity. "We" have forgotten that,... and have become no more than intellectualizing animals, who have changed the image of the Creator, into animals which we THINK we are.
@@averayugen7607 I like that. My thought is we have allowed something (other than human) to rule in and therfore over us. Not a new creation, but an ancient manifestation.
[ENG 156, Canlas] One of the thoughts that occurred to me as I was watching the documentary is how the patriarchal society thought of women as undeserving to be in a position of high power and great obligation as we are "emotional and sentimental", thus unable to think clearly and make objective decisions. But watching how the patriarchal culture rules society with fear, and watching how it reduced nature to something of an economic pofit of some sort, I can say that perhaps it is this "sentimental and emotional" aspect of ours that makes us fitting to be in a position of great obligation. We are, after all, not purely "sentimental and emotional" creatures but is capable of rational thinking like other fellow humans. But this side of us (that probably comes from our capability to be creators of life) allows us to engage matters genuinely and compassionately, something I think this world needs in its profit-driven mindset.
I cant and will not believe that all of this wasnt caused by Adam instead. We know that by default, W are the onew that care, that dont lie or cheat easily, dont manipulate, steal other's ideas or inventions etc etc etc. Most W are genuine, pure, non-violent, selfless, we erase ourselves etc. M are driven by ego, power, dominance etc. And we are supposed to believe that it was Eve that did that, not Adam? All proofs, everyday, points to M because they *still act and think this way*. And they were jealous, so they took everything from us....

What a beautiful philosophy and such a big missing piece in our society. Also so interesting how thr rise of patriarchy is reflected in some creation myths with such weird replacements for birth!
[ENG 156, Garcia] This documentary proves that the cultural obsession with the goddess as mother is engraved in most of culture. Historically, a lot of famous goddesses have been treated and symbolized as mothers including the Christianity wherein Mary, the mother of Jesus, is praised. Although breaking the societal patriarchy through these mother goddesses is impossible for the archetype of masculinity and femininity have been developed in patriarchy itself, it is comforting to know that these goddesses represented the feeling of interconnectedness. These ancient goddesses gives us the notion that we are all part of a divine whole.
[ENG 156, Cas] A lot of people say that in order to move forward, you must not look back. I believe in the importance of looking back. This documentary made me realize even more how we relate to the earth, how sacred this finite planet we are interconnected with is. I also realized how dark death is always portrayed or depicted when it should not be. Many of the myths that I've read since I was a kid portrayed women as monstrous, weak, easily manipulated, and source of lies. Like how evil they portrayed Medusa. I've always looked at women as powerful because of how they give, nurture, protect, counsel, sustain, develop, heal, create, the list could go on. I agree with how we should ground ourselves with these things to ponder, and reach out to others. May we not abuse, control, and put a personal mark on the awesome forces of the natural world. Honestly, this is my first time to know a lot about goddesses because most of the time they receive disparaging remarks. As a Christian, sometimes they don't allow me to dwell much on mythology and learn from it. This documentary made me cry and made me love this web of life I belong to even more. I want to look back and thank the women that actually roam long distances learning the earth. Thank you, goddesses. I will celebrate women everyday. #HappyInternationalWomen'sMonth! 💙✨
Winston Churchill-not really one of my favorite people-said something to the effect that we cannot know where we are going if we don't know where we have been. You can't EFFECTIVELY go forward without studying the past. "The past is never dead. It's not even past. "- William Faulkner. " "Those who do not learn from the past are destined to repeat it."-George Santayana. " "What's past is prologue. "- William Shakespeare
A very Lovely Piece, Lovely indeed. The music soothed my inner Fire, water, wind and earth. They Forget that we come from the womb, it is is our flesh mother who we open our eyes too. We learn love, compassion, forgiveness, understanding from woman. We learn wisdom, enlighteningment from woman. Even our destructive ways are learned by a woman. For the Mother Goddess and her sisters, Pele, Athena, Bassett, Morona, La Santa Muerto, Artimes, Chang'e, Alexandera, Aphrodite/Venus, Belladonna, Yemoja and to those I did not name. I am your Vessel, I have vowed only to Protect the innocent, I return a man now, with the lessons you have taught me. MAMA, is the first words a child says. This is to honor the Mother Goddess, For Children are untaught the universe to fit what man wants. For when a child first says DADA, its a connection between the child and the Fathers relationship to the mother goddess. For she is in all of us and calls to her children, For if we lose ideals in them, She will be lost forever. For She cursed the land man walked upon until the hier returned and she would sleep until the hier called for her. For twins would be born, one to death and the other to life. A bond that could not be broken by man. For the child of life would walk a could lonely path, to be hated on, ridiculed, left for the wolves, While the child of Death watched over the mother Goddess as she sleep. Until the time the twins are reunited.
[ENG156_ROTARLA] The fact that this commentary does not only compile different Goddesses stories but also gathered very wise and successful women has a strong impact to the viewers. one of the things that I have learned in the documentary is that "The supremacy of woman does not mean inequality." As shown to the film that there is no indication of violence as a result of abusive government. It is astounding to know that Women developed agriculture which nowadays men took the privilege of being the savior of vegetation. In return of this action of men, they debunked the supremacy of women and implanted on the history that the one who planted the seeds is the one that should gain the power but I disagree because the bigger picture says it all, the one that should be empowered and respected is the one who nurtured and make the life possible. Furthermore, the maternal instinct is embedded in human DNA, which means that every woman even every animals naturally took cares of their kids. It is remarkable to remember that every human sucked on a breast of a life giving mother. The abusive patriarch for me shouldn't have a room in any space of this world.
I saw this originally on TV, with the episode 'The Burning Times', and not the episode 'Full Circle'. I never thought of it then as being anti men feminism, stereotyping, and other such points.
Certain elements don't really jibe with modern evidence of the native Americans and maori being extremely warlike, although I like the ideas of agriculture and industrialisation being the source of patriarchy
Before the churches took over, humans worshiped mighty goddesses. I call them higher beings - goddesses as well as gods - and they (still) exist. In the next higher levels or dimensions the higher beings are without gender. Up in the highest dimensions they are pure energy, light and love. So no old man with a white beard. How I know? I do not know and I believe nearly nothing. But I can imagine a lot. And when I / you can imagine something, it is possible.

I will never go back asleep again. I love the Goddess inside of me! This is absolutely beautiful! Thank you… ~Deborah. Judges4
Many people especially women are just ridiculous. Do you know what caused women to sleep in the first place? Then how are you sure it won’t happen again??
Makes me feel some what sad. Knowing we live in this awful world which once was a great world. I want the Goddess to return
If people think about it, there's a lot more...

I am so thankful for all of these teachers shown within this video and the others who I have had over the years. These people have shown me what was within me and what power I have in my own life. I am eternally grateful.
I have loved and adored the Goddess ever since I was a child. Without being told about Her I saw Her in Nature. She felt so mysterious yet so close and familiar and I always longed to be one with Her..... and the longing keeps getting stronger.
What a strange, foreign world humans have creared....
U came across this video just today, 6yrs after it was published... wow! Thank you and it all comes full circle regarding my current mission work and life's purpose. 💋💯🙏🏽🌍
It's surreal to watch this in 2020.
I know what you mean; a lost time.

What where is father
Blessed be.
THE E-DOMITES DESTROYED HER EARTH...AND MOTHER IS MADDD AS HELL SHE'S PISSED
I hope your journey continues to be spiritually fruitful. )O( ❤
Where can I find the other two parts of this series? Thank you!
Hail to our Mother, the great Goddess!!!! In perfect love and perfect trust. Blessed be. )O(
I can't believe that it's been 26 years already since this.

I love this film its 29 years old and still talks to me .
I assume you are speaking as a guy fascinated with the ideology around the Goddess just as I am, though.
should be shown in all schools
I wish I could join this table.
No matter what name we use to honor her, may the Great Mother bless us all )O(
So very beautiful, Thank You 💚☮️💚
When I first saw this in the early 1990s it definitely gave this crone a push toward the Mother.
I've watched this a number of times and I love it. Moving, enlightening.......and sad......but still hopeful.
Indeed 🙏🙂
@matteus how do you know that the same isn't true about the male version of history? What proof is there of any facts?

I’ve heard great things about this series. However, I’m deaf. The lack of accessibility/Captions is very disappointing 😞
I own (and cherish) my 25-year-old copy of this trilogy - but thanks for uploading it so I can share it with my friends.

so nice, in the midst of this corona virus, and the research, i needed this to ground me, ... so well done thank you.....
I'd like to watch more videos like this and learn about female figures in mythology and how they have been "translated" or filtered over time.
the Labrys(double sided ax) was the symbol of justice;also associated with the butterfly-symbol of regeneration
Also associated with Mary Daly and her book Gyn/Ecology.
“We forgot we are animals, so we have destroyed the creator for the supreme being, which we think we are.”
WOW WOW WOW...U SPOKE TRUTH
Or,....WE didn't forget. Some believe we are animals. Our intellect just an evolutionary step in our animal development.
Some of us remember we are a reflection an extension of the Creator. Who created animals and us. And in us, an ability to recognize and acknowledge our origin, (Creator) and identity. "We" have forgotten that,...
and have become no more than intellectualizing animals, who have changed the image of the Creator, into animals which we THINK we are.
We have created something other than human...to rule over us.
@@averayugen7607
I like that.

She's back, we are back with her from now to ages,Victorias is our new name blessed we are
How would you describe your beliefs? I've never heard of Victorias.
There is a lot of revisionist history here but on a spiritual level, this is very moving to me.
History as we know it was written by the winners. They erased and revised previous history and religion constantly. History is a series of revisions.
Gosh I wish there were the names of these women .

What a beautiful philosophy and such a big missing piece in our society. Also so interesting how thr rise of patriarchy is reflected in some creation myths with such weird replacements for birth!
[ENG 156, Garcia]
This documentary proves that the cultural obsession with the goddess as mother is engraved in most of culture.

MAMA, is the first words a child says.
This is to honor the Mother Goddess,
For Children are untaught the universe to fit what man wants.
For when a child first says DADA, its a connection between the child and the Fathers relationship to the mother goddess.
For she is in all of us and calls to her children,
For if we lose ideals in them, She will be lost forever.
For She cursed the land man walked upon until the hier returned and she would sleep until the hier called for her.
For twins would be born, one to death and the other to life. A bond that could not be broken by man.
For the child of life would walk a could lonely path, to be hated on, ridiculed, left for the wolves,
While the child of Death watched over the mother Goddess as she sleep.
Until the time the twins are reunited.
Marija Gimbutas(the Living Goddessess) and Elizabeth Gould Davis(First Sex) were revelating to me!
Thank you for this gift !
Can you tell me if is possible to have the documentary in a translation spanish version ?

Certain elements don't really jibe with modern evidence of the native Americans and maori being extremely warlike, although I like the ideas of agriculture and industrialisation being the source of patriarchy
It didn't happen over 1000's of years, it happened relatively quickly....
