  • HOW DO SUBMARINES GET OXYGEN?
The primary method of producing oxygen in subs is through electrolysis of pure water in an oxygen generator. However, there is a backup method, the burning of oxygen candles. Calcium perchlorate produces oxygen when it decomposes at elevated temperatures. But there's special candles made for submarines that when burnt, produce 99% pure oxygen. They're made of sodium chlorate and iron power. They get super hot so they're enclosed in a container when burning, and they are ignited with a phosphorus match, which is supplied with the candle. They're frequently used during under ice training, when it would be difficult to surface the boat to get air if the regular oxygen generators, using electrolysis, malfunctioned.
