This is an in-depth film of a voyage through the Arctic Ocean ice to the geographic North Pole on the nuclear powered icebreaker '50 Years of Victory'. Leaving the North Pole, we visited Franz Josef Land before sailing back to Murmansk. Along the way we saw polar bears, walruses, seals and birds.
'50 Years of Victory' (50 лет Победы / 50 Let Pobedy) is the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world. She is an engineering marvel and is powered by 2 nuclear reactors that produce 75,000 horsepower giving her the ability to break through ice up to 2.8 meters thick or nearly 10 feet of ice.
The 50 Years of Victory has an endurance of 5 years before she needs refuelling with new uranium. The reactors eliminate greenhouse gas emissions that are characteristic of ships burning fossil fuels.

Watching this video in 2020, almost 6 years after published. Never felt it's that old. Man, what a journey. This video is far better than anything on Netflix.
it's clearly a tourist's own holiday video, not sure how you can make that appraisal. :) I couldn't watch more than 3 minutes.
What an amazing ship, the Russians should be proud of her, she truly is remarkable !
+Patrick J We are. But we're building a new one, even bigger and more powerful than this - the new Arktika class. Two of those beauties are laid down.

This was truly fascinating to watch !! AWESOME ship, AMAZING how it broke through the thick ICE at the North Pole !!! Great footage over all ... "Thank you" for sharing !
+Rick S.
It's indeed an amazing ship that puts non-Russian icebreakers well behind wrt performance.
Instead of using 1000 tons of fuel oil, whole trip used 1kg of uranium fuel. Certainly makes you think .Fantastic viewing thanks for taking the time to post this video as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

+Nikolai Balykov Glad to provide some family entertainment for you.
What an incredible trip. I didn't think it would be so interesting because of how bleak everything looks, but the ice flows and seeing them get split by the bow that easily impressed me.

What an incredible journey, nuclear power is scary but truly amazing, one kilo of uranium used for such a trip.....!!!....25 YEARS before refueling...!!!
jean-michel HERBERT We were told that The 50 Years of Victory has an endurance of about 5 years before she needs refuelling with new uranium.
tletter Yeah, when you said that I thought it seemed a bit low. I wonder if they choose to refuel them more often and keep less fuel on board.
+jean-michel HERBERT 4 to 5 Years with 6 months off for refuelling
I think it may be that they use low enriched uranium (below 20% U-235) instead of the weapons grade enriched (above 80% U-235) uranium that is used on submarines that can go 25-ish years between refueling.
Posible the best video ive seen about icebreakers cograts, and thanks you so much for sharing this experience to the north pole

You're welcome
Great video. I also had an opportunity to be within about 30 miles of the north pole however by less exotic means but equally thankful to high tech. It was a flight from JFK to Taipei. Watching the flight tracker I went to the window as we approached the pole. Everyone else was sound asleep or watching a movie. Frankly I could not see anything as it was November and already dark, But it was after all... the north pole!!
+loveaodai100
Ah yes air travel. I remember it vaguely from the time before COVID-19 😉
a well documented and detailed video.. thanks for sharing...
Amazing journey, very entertaining. That magnificent ship made the 4 day trip to the North Pole seem so effortless, easy and relaxing that to ponder the fact that so many over the last century attempted, and failed to attain the same goal, losing their lives in the process is almost impossible to fathom...Now, to see this ship move so effortlessly across the thick ice entertaining TOURISTS on regularly scheduled North Pole return trip made it finally clear to me the North Pole has been fully conquered as it has now become a regular tourist destination...Very sobering...
+teunis37
The same line of reasoning applies to advances in air travel and many other technological fields. How many early aviators died yet now TOURISTS travel the stupendous distances without a thought about those who died paving their way. It's called technological progress and it benefits many people including TOURISTS!
I don't get the flightseeing, ice and water and ice and water.......................
Where was Santa Claus? Great video..
I don't get why there are no protest comments here... aside from mine. Doesn't anyone see the damage of altered states going on?
From 22:35 to 23:41, Look at that male Polar Bear, hat guy was enjoying the swimming in the icy cold water like I do in the beaches of my country Cuba or Florida Keys.

Amazing how they know they can go thru that massive ice area without getting stuck in the middle of nowhere
+P o o m
It's a question of power and hull strength. '50 Years of Victory' has 75,000 horsepower and an LL1 ice rating (the highest possible). Hence Victory has an incredible ability to move through ice.
Great video. Superb!
Im so amazed 😍
Awesome!! What a big ship!!
This is an amazing story, so interesting, mystical and magical really. When I was in the Coast Guard, I tried to get stationed on an ice breaker. Alas, it never worked, and I spent all of my time in relatively modest, warm water locations on small boats and a tug. But, this s great.
+Ward Cornett
Icebreakers are certainly interesting. Earlier this year I saw USCGC Polar Star breaking ice into McMurdo Base in Antarctica.
@@tletter You were down there? Those new CG ice breakers are pretty amazing too. I finished the Coast Guard in June of 1971. They built the new ones later. However, I worked on a harbor tug at the uS Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore. When ice breakers came into the yard, we always had to get the assistance of commercial tugs as we could not handle them by ourself, way too heavy. Other ships, no problem, but not the ice breakers. Also back then it was Northwind, Southwind, Eastwind etc.
I found your page, lots of great travels, pictures and videos. Good job.
+Ward Cornett
Yes I went on a month long voyage to the Ross Sea including a visit to McMurdo Station. The new Polar Security Cutter icebreakers appear to be impressive as do the new Arktika class nuclear-powered icebreakers, 3 of which have already been launched!
Awesome!

p.s. The word "nuclear" can be broken into two words: "nu" ("new") and "clear"("kleer"). A helpful mantra is to say that nuclear is "new" and it is "clear". Put those together, and you have "new-clear".
So "nu" is pronounced "new"/"knew"/"noo", and "clear" is pronounced just the way it's spelled (i.e. "kleer").
The word "clear" IS NEVER pronounced "kyoo-lar".
Instead, the word "clear" IS ALWAYS pronounced "kleer".
So...in review: "nuclear" is ALWAYS properly pronounced "new-kleer".
Hope this helps! :-)
p.p.s. Some people say "new klee-yar", which is also acceptable, but NEVER "new-kyoo-lar".
+theoriginalcraig
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the colloquial pronunciation British /ˈnjuːkjʊlə/, U.S. /ˈn(j)ukjələr/ (frequently rendered in written form as nucular[...]) is now commonly given as a variant in modern dictionaries. However, if this acceptable pronunciation spoiled my film for you, then sobeit.

@4:45 ahahahahha, very nice
hoping to make the trip 2022. i hear there are two trips a season. which one is better to take, the ffirst or second of the season
+daniel Cashman
I suggest the first trip of the season when the ice is heaviest. There used to be 5 trips a season but that may have changed with COVID, so please check online with either Quark or Poseidon Expeditions for up to date information on the cost, duration, etc.
If they wouldn't let me do polar plung naked I'd settle for a speedo lol

$35,000 to $45,000 per person! Whoa!
26000$ for this, but i think it would be worth it!

far from worth it.

I like that somebody that has the wealth to be able to take a trip like this, makes the effort to share it with the rest of us who have no hope of ever doing such a trip. It's a good second best! This took a lot of time to put together with planning, editing, voice-over, background music and so on. Thank you sir for your generosity with your time, hope you enjoy many more exotic adventures.
+Mike Bradley
Thank you for commenting. I hope that you do eventually get to travel to the places that interest you. In my case, it took a lifetime of work to be able to travel, however, COVID-19 has now taken that away.
@@tletter , only fascism and psychopaths have taken that away .
You can go wherever you want in Russia. The border patrol would not stop you coming North. You can go up to the next one in Canada if you want. Do you? You won't need money there just your guts to preserve. The polar bears are still there and they are always hungry.

Amazing how the world is underappreciative of Russian Engineering. I mean they make some of the most industrial looking but very functional machines that get the job done no matter what.
I wish I had this kind of money someday to go to the North Pole someday. It's mesmerizing!
BUT THE OLD BOYS CLUB ARE TOO BUSY CRYING THEY ALL NEED A SWIFT KICK IN THE ASS.
Russians sent the first satellite and a human in space. It's the best engineering in the history.
they copied mostly.
@@u235u235u235 copied from what? If they were the first Nation to send a satellite to the space, who the hell they copied?
@@kalpananath9705 They copied most of what they have, from German and USA technology. Many documentaries on it. Rockets, Tanks, Nuclear Bombs, Bombers, just a few big ticket items mentioned.
A great and enjoyable video. Showing the beauty and the force of the Nature, as well achievements of technology and science. Thank you. It is regrettable that these days hatred of Russia is widespread in North America.
With respect and love to my Slavic brothers - a Slavic Canadian.
they deserve the hate to be honest. What they did to Ukraine is pure evil. However, I will say, the majority of Russian's are probably good people.
This is an excellent video, well shot and edited Thomas! Your dialogue is clear, concise and your pace just right. I enjoyed your superb graphics too, especially when you circled your speed on the instrument panel with a quill feather, and the radiation symbol on the locked door to the reactor room! Your details and description about the wildlife encountered, especially the walrus pod (42:23) was very educational and much appreciated.
May I ask what camera's you used? It was not in the info above. I noticed what looked like a GoPro or Sony cam on your head strap, but for the long and very stable zoomed shots, especially of the polar bear (48:27), were you using a DSLR and long lens mounted on a tripod, or a dedicated video cam with image stabiliztion?
I sailed on 7 expeditions to Antarctica (2013-2016) on two Russian polar research ships owned by the Russian Academy of Sciences - the Akademik Ioffe and Akedemik Sergy Vavlilov. I was truly impressed with the build and cleanliness of the ships, right down to the engine room. The crew are very proud of their boats, which was evident everywhere you went throughout the ship. Even while at sea, the crew would be outdoors painting and maintaining the steel surfaces during good weather.
One last request - could you list your musical selections, especially the Russian orchestra music as you steamed into Murmansk.
Thank you once again Thomas for a marvelous tour!
Cheers!
