I wouldn't go as far as to say I felt sympathy for Colm, but it definitely didn't feel all that rewarding watching him swing. all I can think about is how easily that could be dutch instead of colm, they're guilty of the same crimes, but dutch has this moral superiority that he hides behind, so I guess that makes it okay in everyone's eyes? I guess I'm thinking the van der linde gang is just as bad as the O'Driscolls, but the game still manipulates the player into thinking otherwise.

game doesn't manipulate players, game shows the players that two gangs are actually different, its like bad cop and good cop, both are cops but their approaches are different, we see this at the very start of the game, what did o'driscolls do to sadie? threw her into basement and killed her husband then occupied their home, god knows what they'd do to her if dutch's gang didn't arrive, in fact i think we can all think of few terrible things gang of guys would do to her, anyway to her luck dutch and his gang arrives and kill them then micah had his idiotic moment and burns the house down (on accident), now if dutch was a depraved piece of shit with no morals they'd most likely do henious acts to her and then either kill her or let her freeze but they didn't, both dutch and arthur genuinely cared about her fate and took her in, both arthur and dutch display basic human decency while also being outlaws, most of the gang constantly struggles with this same issue, yesterday while playing i've read arthurs journal and he was remarking how charles is a good person after arthur and charles save the german family while setting up new camp, arthur writes how charles is pure hearted while he (arthur himself) constantly struggles bettween good and evil in his heart, mary linton also writes how "theres a good man inside of you arthur, but hes wrestling with a giant" you can also find old newspapers in camp talking about gangs first robbery and how they gave money to the poor, van der lindes started off as robin hood like gang, groups usually reflect their leaders and this is the case with van der lindes, they're mostly similiar to dutch its the way he made them, some are worse some are better like all groups but dutch was more of a dreamer and ideologist than "i just want money" type, he believed in actual societal changes and stuff while colm was a pure bred outlaw who just grabbed money wherever he could colm also didn't care about who he recruits so you both had decent folk like kieran or psychopaths, rapists and god knows what else, dutch picked his recruits very carefully anyway to cut this short what im trying to say is that dutch's gang WAS different than colm's their fundementals were different and dutch was indeed a decent or even a good person at some point or at the very least dutch had good ideas and good intentions, the problem is that in the end dutch turned into colm if not worse (like how he manipulated the indians int owar) and that was his downfall, dutch and micah gang on that mountain towards end of the game was just like o'driscolls, dutch stopped being dutch, he ruined himself and eventually became just another outlaw who died brutally.@@ReitanaViscera
Arthur has never liked revenge quite frankly he was over the o'driscoll fued long before he saw colm hang. I think it has to do with how his son Isaac and his mother Eliza died. When he talks about how they died it sounds like he went after them and realized how empty it all was but he is still heartbroken and angry over it
Arthur is not a smart person, Dutch is the brain of the operation. Making sure Colm doesnt escape is 100% the right call here, as well as killing Cornwall. The gang was on its way out until Arthur showed up breaking it apart by calling Micah a rat, followed by John walking back with a Pinkerton squad.
@@jamesdillon637 Arthur was one of the top guns in his time with excellent combat intelligence, but this is not the same as the intelligence required to run a gang like Dutch/Hosea, the fact that he called Micah a rat out of personal hatred and an enemy’s words is proof for that. Dutch suspected that John was the rat, why didn’t he just go ask Milton?
@kaydens6964 an enemy who had no reason to lie. Milton had Arthur at Gun Point and if it wasn't for Abigail he would of died. Milton had no logical reason to lie at this point. Dutch is not very intelligent, hell Lenny even more intelligent. Dutch and Hosea are con man, and continue to make grave mistakes because of pride and arrogance.
Mary Beth said it best. "Oh Arthur, you might be the only fool here who knows how lost he is" Arthur knew the world didn't want them and Colm was a minor problem compared to the world closing in on them.
@juicedgoose true. He seemed to know the world didn't want them and their time was coming but had faith Dutch would find a way. Eventually like you said he saw the lies.
@@juicedgoose with the amount of times ive replayed rdr2 ive realized dutch didn't trust arthur or even hosea early into the game maybe even before the game takes place one reason i think is because of black water both were not apart of it and were trying another job. On my most recent play through when you are leaving the mountians i noticed one that ealry dutch says it in kinda of a joking way but he tell arthur he doesn't want him to ride with him because he can ride with hosea because he knows they like to remember the old days and talk about how dutch is messing everything up
@@PissBreakSupervisorOleHopkinsyeah on the second play-through that line does hit different. Despite that I still feel like Hosea grounded Dutch as he didn’t become fully unhinged until he was gone. With Arthur though… it’s like he never stopped seeing Arthur like a child, as someone small and inexperienced and not worth listening to. Like a parent who never moves on from thinking they know better than their child, despite the child becoming grown and experienced in life.
Arthur said in the beginning that “revenge is a fool’s game” and it very much is- and it’s what ultimately led to John getting killed in RDR1 after he decided to go after Dutch and Micah in the epilogue.
Ironically I believe Arthur says it because Dutch used to say it. And to piggyback off of the idea of revenge getting everyone killed, Arthur I just noticed seems to be the only one who actually managed to save the people he wanted to and got them all out clean. (Saddie, Charles, John, Uncle, Abigail, Jack, Elizbeth, etc) because he was the only one who didn't believe in revenge or never succumbs to it even his "dishonorable" ending is just not helping John and grabbing money not killing Dutch or Micha or anyone. It is a cool theme that plays throughout both games.
Seeing this scene the first time was oddly dark even for RDR2. Colm O'Driscoll, Dutch Van Der Lind's long time rival, multiple escapes from the gallows finally gets hanged for his crimes. The part that made it kinda sad was him thinking he was gonna get out of it again but he looks around, sees Sadie and Dutch with two of his boys and as a final prayer in his men he looks at the rooftop and just sees Arthur "huge balls" Morgan and realizes its over, theres no getting out of this one. The genuine fear and panic in his eyes and expressions in his face of "Im gonna die...im gonna die... Jesus Christ im actually gonna die" is some of the most real looking animations from any game ive personally played.
Arthur didn't care about Colm because he knew it was pointless. It was just Dutch looking for a cheap victory. Colm's swinging body wasn't going to chase the Pinkertons off, or turn the ship away from the iceberg.
If anything it would increase the amount of attention to the van der linde gang with the destruction of another major outlaw gang like the o’driscolls.
@@xanshen9011yes, this! Killing Colm was dumb because essentialy we did job for the Pinkertons and thanks to that they could allocate more resources to start chasing Dutch and his gang. Besides that, Arthur knew hating Colm was pointless because not only Artie would die soon but also because gang life is brutal and sooner or later one side would do something bad to the second side, and the second side would do the same to the first. Hating was pointless because it was blinding them. It was better to just get angry and ready to fight than just blindly hating and doing dumb things, like Dutch helping (accidentally) Pinkertons
I honestly think that colm being there was just another dark mirror for the gang. semi Organized, massive, and vicious beyond belief. Not as mindlessly evil as the murfree brood, the nightfolk, or the skinnered brothers. But DEFINITELY worse than most of the other gangs. The way they killed and paraded Keirin's corpse is a textbook example. I mean how much hate must it to it take a corpse in full rigar, keep it perseved, then monted in a specific pose on horseback, just as a final "f you" before attempting to kill everyone at the camp?! Hosea's comment about "finding and making dragons" is given form here...some times we find it, other times? The dragon lives inside us. We have to wrestle with it no different than Arthur and his giant.
Despite feuding for many years, it felt like it all ended with a whimper. It was more closure for Sadie whom was just a recent victim. The biggest worry was the House of Dutch facing destruction at that time.
It's nice to watch these videos and analyze this amazing story. Especially since I almost exclusively play RDR2 now in Chapter 2 (prior to saving Micah) when things are still good. The game is ostensibly a hunting/gambling/riding simulator for me now. I have numerous save files labeled in folders according to chapter and circumstance. If I ever progress too far and things start getting depressing, I go back to the basics in chapter 2, usually after the hunting trip with Hosea so I always have a means to brush my horse. I imagine one day I'll bite the bullet and finish it again, but until then these excellent videos will suffice to remind me of the story.
I think one aspect of Colm that most people miss, as it’s some dialogue in a fishing mission with Javier, is that Dutch and Colm weren’t always at odds. In fact I think during the fishing mission Arthur says they were even almost friends or acquaintances at the least, and that Colm ran with them for a bit-probably before Colm had his own established gang. I think there’s a good chance that Arthur may have even liked Colm before the feud. I also think it’s quite likely that Dutch treated Colm much like he treated Bronte. We know Dutch started it by killing Colm’s brother, and I have no doubt Dutch viewed it as a necessary “it’s him or me” murder. Most of the gang members like Javier joined after the feud had started, which is why they harbored more hatred toward the O’Driscolls than Arthur or John seemed to have. They knew a time before the feud, while when the others joined were probably immediately told that Colm and his gang are their mortal enemies.
Arthur's account of Dutch and Colm falling out is "Colm's mean streak got meaner." ua-cam.com/video/7v-O8OJAp3Q/v-deo.html It sounds to me like they did something awful to provoke Dutch.
I think i remember arthur saying there's a conflict between their way being a gang Dutch: wanted to rob people for money without making killing innocent people While colm want to rob and doesn't care if he kill people for money as long he got the money he don't give a f and i think those different ideology make them fight with each other
Basically for the same reason you don't care about stuff like getting an episode of your favourite TV show spoiled when that same day you've been told your mother has died.
It’s really good writing when you notice how at the start of somebody’s first play through, they hate Colm like Arthur does, and by the time he gets hanged, the player too does not care about Colm really either.
There is defienelty some satisfaction from watching a man thinking he is so god damn untouchable to be brutally reminded of the fact he is not, in the worse way at the worst time. But yeah in terms of Cole I kinda liked him tbh in all the interactions he seemed to at least know he is a bad man.
At that point in chapter 6, nobody really gave a damn about Colm cuz we had bigger problems, such as the Pinkertons, so if hanging Colm would have been in chapter 2 or 3 then we would have cared more
that part though where he was getting hanged - where he realized no one was coming to save him - felt so real to me, like i legit saw so much emotion in his face, it was awesome but also very sad..
"But you killed his brother Dutch" Sounded like Arthur always had a soft spot for Colm to begin with. Or at the very least, understood why the man hated Dutch so much. My guess is Annabelle was killed due to Dutch killing the brother, however Dutch does not see it or tell it like that.
i was kinda on dutch’s side, watching Colm hang though. Just watching him be all smug and then looking around wondering where all his men were and realizing nobody was about to save him this time, causing him to have his reality seep in to him before his last moments. It made me smile
The change in Arthur after he's officially diagnosed with TB is understandable. For the 1st time in his life, he is coming to terms with his deeds and knows the end is coming. For an outlaw, not knowing if the next bullet has your name on it and if it does, it's an instant "lights out" vs a slow, drawn-out death from TB gives him time to reflect. Especially if plating as a high honor character, you see him confess his previous evil ways to the nun
"Which one". When Dutch says to Colm about stealing from them during their standoff is the moment still on every replay where I remember just how likable and quick Dutch can be even to his enemies who just might gun him down in the next five seconds.
ill be honest, dutch pretty much convinced me to join the colm hate train full speed near the time of his hanging, at least until he was gone. prob cuz of the kidnapping and how sympathetic i was to sadie, because goddamn if this didn't feel good for her of all people (i love sadie). that scene where colm sees all of his men aka his escape routes have been foiled and realizes he's going to die was just so, so beautiful. major props to whoever's face they had to mocap. in retrospect though, that moment colm has before he hangs really reflects on dutch a lot more. how yeah, neither of them were all that great, but dutch had become so ruthless and irrational that he realized exactly who he was fighting against this whole time, exactly what the stakes were just a bit too late. that moment is beautiful still and even more because we can read an entire lifetime and weight through his fear that must contain all the complex emotions and stories and sins that we've played through ourselves, and seeing ourselves so deeply in him, us as the audience are the only ones that get to ask ourselves the question, "do we deserve it too?" - and only _we_ do because dutch and sadie are blinded by rage and revenge and barely looking at colm at this point, and arthur is too far away and disillusioned to even think about making out any of his microexpressions much less any facial expressions. that moment on colm's face is when he is truly, utterly, the most alone he could ever be. no one will know how fearful he looked in his last moments of life, and at the time, i was essentially converted into feeling really, really good about it. but the more i dealt with dutch, the less i could savor any victory we might've had here. shit, sadie cutting off the entire o'driscoll bloodline (so-to-speak) was more rewarding than this hanging.
i think it falls to one simple thing, revenge can feel good in the moment, but once you've finally had it, then what? what happens when the thing you fought so hard for at the cost of many lives, lives of people you cared for and loved, what happens then? what is your drive once you've finally taken away the one thing that kept you going, you finally got what you want sure but whose left to celebrate it with you?
Ever played conan exiles. Nearly every killed character you can make into a trophy. You can kill players and literally make them into sausages or bone decorations. That’s what you do when you are finished with revenge. Expand the collection and gaze upon your power and always be on the lookout to do it again.
I think Arthur understood that what Dutch did about Colm's brother was enough to expect a retaliation from him. He even says so at the very first chapter.
Because Arthur never hated him, just disliked and didnt cared about him. Arthur knew its better to just get money and gtfo should be a priority now, not killing somebody. Maybe ten or fifteen years earlier Arthur would agree with Dutch and even be happy, but in 1899 Arthur knew already that he and other Wild West gangsters are a thing from the past and everything becomes more modern by day. Its pointless to just murder your enemies because all you do is helping the feds. Less gangsters means you'll be their next target. Arthur learned from Dutch - Revenge is fools game, but Dutch forgot his own teachings because he wanted to get one cheap win. Also, Arthur knew Dutch is not the only person in this beef that got hurt. Colm also lost a loved one and he also had right to kill Dutch, but instead of that he tried to capture him and trade him for his own freedom. I think Arthur just had enough of Dutchs bullshit and victim card usage as well.
It was never Arthur’s concern. The feud is based on some petty bullshit between Dutch and colm, I believe dutch killed colms brother and colm killed one of Dutch’s lovers or something. Basically it has nothing to do with Arthur, therefore he has no emotional attachment to the conflict outside of being loyal to Dutch
I like the tau, I like the idea of there being a gooder guy. I get why people enjoy everything is bad nothing is good well listening to Hayd and system of the down. But I also like the idea of a good thing happening for the sake of good
I mean colm deserve it that is really just it. A 10min video for this is not necessary. Like he tortured him, his people kill Ms Adler husband who was just someone living at his house and they came in. So it’s not like colm should be cared for. That’s why he doesn’t care like would you care if you saw the absolute fear in the eyes of a serial killer well no. Colm killed just bc, colm is the worst kind of outlaw, he lives for nothing else but his own gain. One less piece of shit in the world is what Arthur prolly thought of
Content farming? How? This wasn’t a breakdown of “if Colm deserved to die or not”. This was a deeper look at Arthur questioning his loyalty. The very thing he held above all else. Something he struggles more with once he acknowledges how sick he is. The point of the video isn’t Colm’s fate. Its Arthur’s reflection on how much he probably never cared on a personal level of how “bad of a person Colm was”. It was Dutch’s fight not his.
@@CynicGTA I mean I’m pretty sure you repeated the loyalty thing like 10 times. The question is why did Arthur barely cared for his death?. If you’re gonna talk about it you gotta talk about the kind of person colm was. If he wasn’t loyal to Dutch he prolly wouldn’t go to the hanging but he wouldn’t have cared either way. You are content farming it doesn’t make you a bad person but it is what it is content farming.
Arthur even said that Colm didnt seem such worry as a pinkertons but i dont fully agree with that, O'Driscolls found a camp at shady belle and tried to kill everyone there i think Colm was the problem but not in chapter 6, Dutch wanted to kill him just for vengeance, Arthur just saw him swing and just wanted to let go of the beef that lasted many years
To be fair you Can't really blame society and the authauritys for not forgetting what they did. Dutch kept causeing more and more damage to the point where hè could no longer be ignored by the law. Besides the opinion of the people hè wronged, institutions cant allow a potential threat to persist just because hè got what hè wanted and says hè will not be a problem. In other words, Dutch waffles about being good but in reality hè wants to continue living in a world where hè can do What hè wants to who ever hè wants without consequences , and when that stopped hè tryed butting heads with reality hopeing to win which is impossible and everyone else payed the price
I think he just knew that colm's death wasn't actually that important compared to the pinkertons honestly. they had FAR bigger problems and colm escaping wasn't one of them
But how about all the time that Arthur attacked O'Dricoll camps, killing everyone in increasingly, sick, twisted and sadistic manners? ....or was that just me?
i think the main reason Arthur didn't care about Colm's death was the fact that Colm's boys kidnapped him & Arthur had to escape from them. It also put an end to the feud between Colm & Dutch
Idk how you feel bad about the people who borrowed money from the gang? It’s a simple borrow money pay it back when you’re supposed to? Don’t like it go to the bank
Not caring and not liking someone/something is 2 very different things, the video was talking about the change in Arthur and if he ever cared about Colm, your comment never stated that he didn't care, you said something implying that he hates him. Which Arthur stated multiple times AFTER being tortured by Colm that it wasn't his fight. You saved no ones time as your comment is invalid. Maybe you could state that he doesn't hate him, just doesn't care instead of being a condescending douche bag.@@JuicyJam

game doesn't manipulate players, game shows the players that two gangs are actually different, its like bad cop and good cop, both are cops but their approaches are different, we see this at the very start of the game, what did o'driscolls do to sadie? threw her into basement and killed her husband then occupied their home, god knows what they'd do to her if dutch's gang didn't arrive, in fact i think we can all think of few terrible things gang of guys would do to her, anyway to her luck dutch and his gang arrives and kill them then micah had his idiotic moment and burns the house down (on accident), now if dutch was a depraved piece of shit with no morals they'd most likely do henious acts to her and then either kill her or let her freeze but they didn't, both dutch and arthur genuinely cared about her fate and took her in, both arthur and dutch display basic human decency while also being outlaws, most of the gang constantly struggles with this same issue, yesterday while playing i've read arthurs journal and he was remarking how charles is a good person after arthur and charles save the german family while setting up new camp, arthur writes how charles is pure hearted while he (arthur himself) constantly struggles bettween good and evil in his heart, mary linton also writes how "theres a good man inside of you arthur, but hes wrestling with a giant" you can also find old newspapers in camp talking about gangs first robbery and how they gave money to the poor, van der lindes started off as robin hood like gang, groups usually reflect their leaders and this is the case with van der lindes, they're mostly similiar to dutch its the way he made them, some are worse some are better like all groups but dutch was more of a dreamer and ideologist than "i just want money" type, he believed in actual societal changes and stuff while colm was a pure bred outlaw who just grabbed money wherever he could colm also didn't care about who he recruits so you both had decent folk like kieran or psychopaths, rapists and god knows what else, dutch picked his recruits very carefully anyway to cut this short what im trying to say is that dutch's gang WAS different than colm's their fundementals were different and dutch was indeed a decent or even a good person at some point or at the very least dutch had good ideas and good intentions, the problem is that in the end dutch turned into colm if not worse (like how he manipulated the indians int owar) and that was his downfall, dutch and micah gang on that mountain towards end of the game was just like o'driscolls, dutch stopped being dutch, he ruined himself and eventually became just another outlaw who died brutally.@@ReitanaViscera
Arthur has never liked revenge quite frankly he was over the o'driscoll fued long before he saw colm hang. I think it has to do with how his son Isaac and his mother Eliza died. When he talks about how they died it sounds like he went after them and realized how empty it all was but he is still heartbroken and angry over it
They killed Arthur's family?

AURTHER!
@@kaydens6964 Trust me arthur was smart he just played dumb even hosea said it to him multiple times
"Oh Arthur, you might be the only fool here who knows how lost he is"
Arthur knew the world didn't want them and Colm was a minor problem compared to the world closing in on them.
She was kind of right, but Arthur didn't truly know how lost he was until he saw Dutch for who he really was, that everything was built on lies.

It’s not animations. It’s acting through motion capture
@@xanshen9011 Exactly. That's why Arthur couldn't give two shits.
Arthur's account of Dutch and Colm falling out is "Colm's mean streak got meaner." ua-cam.com/video/7v-O8OJAp3Q/v-deo.html

Loyalty and faith
I think i remember arthur saying there's a conflict between their way being a gang

Ayyyyyeeee, thank you
Basically for the same reason you don't care about stuff like getting an episode of your favourite TV show spoiled when that same day you've been told your mother has died.
At that point in chapter 6, nobody really gave a damn about Colm cuz we had bigger problems, such as the Pinkertons, so if hanging Colm would have been in chapter 2 or 3 then we would have cared more
Colm was Dutch enemy and rival. Not Arthur's
This video is an excellent analysis of a complex group of relationships. Good work.

Best RDR2 Channel in the game keep them coming. 🐐
Revenge is a fools game. Took me a long time to learn that myself
Always thought it was interesting that dutch and colms outfits are very similar even how they wear their guns

“Revenge is a luxury we can’t afford”
ill be honest, dutch pretty much convinced me to join the colm hate train full speed near the time of his hanging, at least until he was gone. prob cuz of the kidnapping and how sympathetic i was to sadie, because goddamn if this didn't feel good for her of all people (i love sadie). that scene where colm sees all of his men aka his escape routes have been foiled and realizes he's going to die was just so, so beautiful. major props to whoever's face they had to mocap.
in retrospect though, that moment colm has before he hangs really reflects on dutch a lot more. how yeah, neither of them were all that great, but dutch had become so ruthless and irrational that he realized exactly who he was fighting against this whole time, exactly what the stakes were just a bit too late. that moment is beautiful still and even more because we can read an entire lifetime and weight through his fear that must contain all the complex emotions and stories and sins that we've played through ourselves, and seeing ourselves so deeply in him, us as the audience are the only ones that get to ask ourselves the question, "do we deserve it too?" - and only _we_ do because dutch and sadie are blinded by rage and revenge and barely looking at colm at this point, and arthur is too far away and disillusioned to even think about making out any of his microexpressions much less any facial expressions. that moment on colm's face is when he is truly, utterly, the most alone he could ever be. no one will know how fearful he looked in his last moments of life, and at the time, i was essentially converted into feeling really, really good about it. but the more i dealt with dutch, the less i could savor any victory we might've had here.
shit, sadie cutting off the entire o'driscoll bloodline (so-to-speak) was more rewarding than this hanging.
Merry christmas everyone
i think it falls to one simple thing, revenge can feel good in the moment, but once you've finally had it, then what? what happens when the thing you fought so hard for at the cost of many lives, lives of people you cared for and loved, what happens then? what is your drive once you've finally taken away the one thing that kept you going, you finally got what you want sure
but whose left to celebrate it with you?
Ever played conan exiles. Nearly every killed character you can make into a trophy. You can kill players and literally make them into sausages or bone decorations. That’s what you do when you are finished with revenge. Expand the collection and gaze upon your power and always be on the lookout to do it again.
I think Arthur understood that what Dutch did about Colm's brother was enough to expect a retaliation from him. He even says so at the very first chapter.
Magnificent. Thank you.
@@magicgang576L😊
It was never Arthur’s concern. The feud is based on some petty bullshit between Dutch and colm, I believe dutch killed colms brother and colm killed one of Dutch’s lovers or something. Basically it has nothing to do with Arthur, therefore he has no emotional attachment to the conflict outside of being loyal to Dutch
Because they had bigger problems and it wasn’t worth it
I think it wax because Dutch was the only person who was really involved with the rivalry but Arthur saw innocent people like Kieran die because of it
Arthur is the John Wick of the RDR world.
I usually make a point to put one through Colms heart at the start of the firefight when he swings. Just to make sure 😅

The fued with Colm meant more to Dutch than it did to anyone in the gang, it's no wonder Arthur would try to appeal to reason.
It was unnecessary revenge at a time where Colm was the least of their problems. Helped to show Dutchs hypocrisy once again

Arthur didn’t care about Colm’s death because he knew there were much bigger problems than Colm

That was at the start of the game plus Dutch made him do it
