The evil eye comes from ancient times, which is why Greek ships had eyes painted on the front part. It comes from jealousy and envy, but it could also come from people paying too much attention to you, admiring you, or gossiping you. This is why we always say "ftou, ftou", when we say something nice, so that we don't give them the eye by accident. And this is why we wear a cross or a blue bead with a blue eye, because, like on those ancient ships, it reflects the evil eye back to the one who sent it.

Oh my Mom was a firm believer in the mati, she had the de-hexing technique by using a small black cross she’d put in a glass of water. Then do a blessing over it, I can’t remember what it was along with the hand motions of the cross. Then the person with the mati had to drink from different sides of the glass of water. Turks have also this weird tradition with the evil eye. The evil eye is a supernatural belief in a curse, brought about by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when one is unaware. The fear of the evil eye is widespread throughout the world and can be found in many cultures. This phenomenon has often developed similarly in cultures that have no spatial connection. It is attributed to black magic.
