    I'm not sure it's entirely fair to describe the competition in the price range as fierce. Most GPS watches are enormous and those of a similar size to the Suunto 9 Peak, such as the Garmin Fenix 7s are really expensive. So you're not really comparing like to like.

    I got Suunto 9 baro since it was released. And let me tell you what it is. It is a super reliable piece of gear in terms of the hardware and software. Yes it dos not bring the latest and greatest features but the software quality is perfect. Never got a crush or what so ever. Each firmware update is very well tested and it just works.....Great review

      I would agree with your assessment. These days Suunto reminds me a lot of COROS in that they deliver very reliable hardware with little fluff. Unfortunately it seems like the market wants more. I REALLY like Suunto and I hope they push the envelope soon. Thanks for sharing!

      @@ChaseTheSummit Agree. If you have to pick one Garmin watch to have for running and hiking, what would be it? Although i really like Suunto i miss the map sometimes. How good is the Garmin quality nowdays? I was searching and reading feedback in order to get what people think about Garmins these days. I see both edges as always. I saw you fenix6s review being the most comfortable for you but let's say you got just one watch to do it all.

      Hello,
      I love SUUNTO, but I tried the Vantage V : it was much worse than the Ambit 2 I still have... I bought the SUUNTO 9... and it had too many problems, comparing with the accurate and reliable Ambit2. The wrist HR measurement was bad on Vantage and Suunto 9. But it seams to get better with the SUNUNTO 9 Peak. I would try it, to not have to run with my breast belt every time. But I admit, ... the american COROS stays an option... I still miss the flexibilty and easiness for everything of the Ambit serie. The SUUNTO customizable apps were a hudge function of the Ambit!

    This is the best video review I have seen about the suunto 9 peak. Thanks so far. Very good and deep explanation. I bought the suunto 9 peak for running. Used before the spartan sport wri hr baro. And the menu is quite similar. The 9 peak fits a bit better and I used, or can use it, to track my sleep. However, the watch is really expensive. And for an upgrade of the suunto 9, it can be more less costs.

    Great review. Nailed it. Ray said it only samples heart rate at 10 minute intervals? Or did I miss-read? Not sure how the HRV/Resources get properly calculated at that rate.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  3 роки тому

      I'm actually not sure what the all-day HR recording interval is and I don't see it documented anywhere. From my experience it seemed real-time and I noticed that the LED's were flashing whenever I looked under the watch so I assumed it was 1-second. I'll reach out to Suunto for clarity on that. thanks for watching Hunter!

      @@ChaseTheSummit Yeah, when I asked Suunto they said it's on their longer term list to actually record the data. It's not recorded today largely as a legacy artifact from the previous sensor that had to be turned on/off every 10 mins. With the new one it's always on, but just is basically discarding the data on the backend.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  3 роки тому +1

      @@Dcrainmaker Weird. you'd think they'd turn off the LED's to squeeze out a bit more battery life in standby mode. I wonder how that plays into "body resources" if most of the data isn't there.

      I've always said, if they could make a titanium 945 with sapphire I'd be a happy guy. The Fenix comes close but they definitely beef it up for the "rugged looks" that end up adding weight. @@ChaseTheSummit I see a lot of reasons why the 945 is plastic and why it makes sense: 1/ differentiation with Fenix. You want a nice daily driver, you gotta pay the price; 2/ light weight and comfortable; 3/ many people use their Forerunner just for training and don't care about the looks (I am one of those who really care about the looks and find the 945 quite elegant for a sports watch).

    I have used a Suunto Spartan Wrist hr for the last 4 years now. Build quality is excellent but the battery life on my unit is starting to decline. Wished the display on the Suunto 9 Peak was a bit bigger. Never really liked the Garmins but tempted to test out Coros apex pro.
    The upsides with Suunto is the already mentioned build quality, simplicity of the app and watch, really reliable. I am also using the route builder a lot, really great much better than Strava for example. But... Suunto don't have structured intervalls which is a bit of a downside (and strange...)

I'm a weekend runner and trail runner (more or less, rather less than more) so the features are just too many for what I need (but we'll, if they are in we can use them) and the watch really looks strong and resistant plus the size is great (maybe a bit bulky but still smaller and thinner than the Xiaomi). And the good thing is that the worse point is solved now, 2 years later, we can get this watch here in Spain for 250€. Thanks for the review, very well done as always. I used to be a Suunto guy and loved their Ambits but changed to Garmin after horrible experience with Spartan Ultra. Suunto is great hardware company, but they are mediocre when it comes to software. The firmware in their watches is too often like a buggy beta version and their mobile app is not much better. The web portal is now not existing at all. I was thinking about buying the Peak but yet again there are some glitches that make me stay with my Fenix 6 Pro. For example the fact that only one external sensor per category can be saved in the Peak's setting is just mind blowing. I don't want to be re-connecting the powermeters anytime I change my bikes.

I ask because I have a Suunto Traverse Alpha, and the route transfer does not happen via bluetooth, only via Suuntolink on the computer using the USB cable. If you can help me, thanks!

      I think this comes late, but the route sync is being done via Bluetooth, no need a cable for that. Even the software update is done wireless for Suunto 9 Peak. The only cable you need is for charging.

    I am a sprinter using the Spartan, and find that if I do shorter faster sprints (at full speed), the distance measurement can be out by as much as 20%, depending on the speed and distance. As example, on my 150’s at full pace the distance shows 130m runs. On a 120m at full speed the distance goes down to 90 and sometimes even 80m…
    Is anyone on this blog a sprinter that uses the Peak, and how do you find the GPS, because from the review it sounds that with the GPS setting of 1s intervals on the Peak, the problem that I have with my Spartan might be something of the past…?

      Do you typically sprint on a track? If so, you might want to try a brand like Coros or Garmin that have a "Track Mode" as they are super accurate.

    The Suunto watch face with a crappy wide bezel makes me wonder why Suunto is wasting usable display space? The lack of being able to compare the last training session with historical sessions is a big drawback & disappointment. Hardware is not fully integrated, example is the screen which although has high resolution, it looks and feels very obsolete. i found that Suunto 9 has very poor precision in forest areas, during trail running. I compared tracks with my old Garmin 235, and GPS route from Suunto is very wiggly, sometimes completely off the trail, and longer than actual route (4,7 km vs 4 km). the default settings is GPS+QZSS+GLONASS . i tried with GALILEO instead of GLONASS but theres not much difference. Anybody else is dissatisfied with GPS precision? Is it a reason for warranty claim? I understand that GPS by defitiion is not precise thing, but i think smart software can correct random measurement errors, and smoothen wiggles on the route if you go straight for few minutes
