I switched from Garmin Forerunner 245 to the regular Suunto Race and I love it. I'm not a big HR geek nor am I a super competitive runner so no big deal for me. But the hardware is great (no plastic) for the price and I'm extremely happy with it. This one looks great too. Extremely happy with my move so far.
This video is Race S and not Race. Mostly plastic from what I can on Suunto’s website.
Good to see that Suunto finally improved hr accuracy
Well, except for biking. That one example you gave was worse than any optical watch I have used (Apple & Garmin for years) and would kind of be a deal breaker. Was it always that bad or did you just use it those two times on a bike? Have you asked Suunto about it? I know you said lots of optical sensors struggle with biking but that looked completely useless - maybe fit? or location?
Another review nailed. Thanks for all you do, Ray.
I might buy this in waiting for Garmin updates ! Love the small package and Suunto finally nailed it ! Thanks 🙏
Thank you for the review! This looks to be my next sports watch!
My only issue with all these Suunto, Coros and Polar watches is that they keep ommiting ANT+. I spend a lot of time racing indoors and having ANT+ is an absolute must when my Bluetooth power meter is already busy sending it's power info to the tablet. I absolutely need that ANT+ on the watch so it can receive the power data. Oh well! I think Suunto is missing out on a lot of customers, because in addition to other people needing what I need, they also push Garmin on their friends so they can all be in the same ecosystem. As much as I like Suunto, Coros and Polar, my girlfriend and her friends and all my friends I push to Garmin solely because of the ANT+. It's a bigger deal than most people think.
Can’t wait for the Race 2 with that HR sensor
owner of a suunto 9 baro i'm looking soon into switching to their latest, i love their app, i love their route planner, their watches are durable and well built, just can't wait to see that HR accuracy going up and all these little updates will be very welcom, all i care now is the NGP on the watch not as a climb suunto app
Thanks, looks like great watch.
Great review 👍 My Fenix 3HR has had it now so need a new watch. Have been considering another Garmin but this one looks a great option for the price break 💰 Just need to check a few things like Stryd support, Parkrun Barcode, but otherwise seems great 🤞
First discovered DCR when I was looking for views on the Suunto T6c. Move to the Ambit range and then the Garmin Fenix 3 dropped… great to see Suunto coming back and thanks Ray for covering. Suunto doesn’t get much love with other reviewers these days
Where is the 1050 review DCR 😅
Great video as usual! Always curious to ask since you review so many watches. If you could choose only one watch to wear, which one?
thanks for the review Ray, long awaited, and match my expectation ! sounds like a great watch, one quick question, does Suunto made the lugs of the watch less sharpy that the Race on the Race S (like they did on the ocean) ?
Great review - as usual. You can now set the lock screen as a shortcut, so you don't mess up the watch face in the shower :). Long awaited it's there with the latest FW.
I buy suunto Ocean. What a fantastic watch with incredible battery and sweet amoled quality.I am impressed.I give my Garmin forerunner
Excellent video and very interesting watch :) is the performance update, the climb assist (and all other software changes) coming to the Suunto vertical?
Love the Design
Great review. Would suggest a short comparison of platforms as in case of Polar the Flow platform works great and makes me hesitate to look elsewhere, even when watch is this good as Suunto.
I hope some of these software updates and optimizations come to the vertical too. I have auto pause activated on my runs and I cant stand how Ill stop in a run in the mountains to check the map to see if Im on trail and I cant because it paused and then I have to resume in order to access the map. Many of those little tweaks to the workout apps are super appreciated and I hope they come to the Vertical in addition to the Race.
Thanks for sharing
I would love to see a comparison to the Garmin Forerunner 265 and a Beginners guide for the watch!
👍
Great video as always! Love that they finally updated the hardware. Do you think they'll launch a titanium/sapphire edition soon?
Probably in September.
@@kaite8371 Ah thanks. In that period I'm hiking in Germany, hopefully we'll soon know more.
Need a vertical S now.
Right?? I‘d love to see a smaller suunto but still with a MIP Display (not the 9PP though)
omg,.. suunto bringing it! - initial thoughts about the production; does that mean they are looking at the carbon footprint of the watch and making it with 100%renewable energy? - they used to have those stats on the 9 Peak Pro etc
Excited for the Race 2 - old man eyes needs big screen size haha
Per Suunto: The Race S will be carbon offset with Verified Carbon Units, an initiative that involves planting coastal mangrove forests, which not only stabilize shorelines but also remove pollutants, improve water quality, and provide crucial nursery habitats for fisheries. Additionally, the Race S will have slim, minimalist packaging, using entirely recycled paper.
@@ActionHub love this. Thank you
Good job Suunto!
It seems to be a very decent watch for the money. It wont make me want to trade in my Garmin watch but if I were to get a new watch Suunto is definitely a brand I would look at in my research for a new watch. That said I will never buy a watch with Gorilla glass as I tend to scratch them whereas sapphire obviously costs more but does not really scratch unless you make a real effort to wreck it.
When can we expect the update to the Suunto Race with these new features and updates?
There is a feature in Garmin, when you pause workout, you can choose 'resume later' and watch goes back to normal mode, without gps etc. Is there something similar in this?
Any thoughts on their straps, especially silicon and/or microfiber? Which one do you think is better? And GREAT video!
Thanks for this review.
I have a question.
I was already so hyped about the Suunto Vertical.
But now i saw the Race S.
And the price is hot.
I would use the Watch for Mountainbike, Hiking, Skitour, Snowboarding, Jogging
I thought the Vertical was Perfect for me. But could someone tell me the main Differences?
Which watch would you take for my usecase? Thx
What a time to be alive if you're a fitness watch geek.
Sooooooo - when will it be available?!?! Awesome awesome review - super excited to get this one
It was on their website this morning.
@@peakproofuk saw that and ordered! I was initially looking at the black casing with black band - which is out of stock- but thankfully one of the other color variance was not. Thanks!
@@fitgearhunterplease review this watch sir
Just received my Race S and the watch is stuck in debug mode, with a white screen showing crosshairs. You can cycle between testing the hardware, including calibration of the crown, but the watch will not load the main operating system. Tried to do a hard reset using the Suuntolink app on desktop but the watch isn't recognized.
I looks like Suunto is shipping at least some of the initial release without being fully baked.
We need Vertical 2 💪
I love my suunto 9 peak pro. And mine is performing great and was keeping he same heart rate accuracy as my samsung watch 5 pro so that's good I guess lol but I'm an MIP display guy I don't amoled
Major kudos to Suunto for making (some) of these in Finland! I really want to give this watch a shot - but not having built-in music storage is a major negative. It's never coming?
Y’aura il une version sapphire titanium? Quel dommage que ce ne soit pas au lancement
Great watch! I’m still picking up my Coros pace 3 over this everyday.
Is there option to change the screen orientation? (i wear watch on my right wrist) thx
When you tested it in the open water does it measure the water temperature?
Yes looks like a good watch. Can you recommend a fitness watch around 400$ max. I run and workout each thrice a week and once a month go hiking. Need something for a long time with good app support. Not so much inclined towards having music as i generally dont listen to music. Your suggestion will be highly appreciated. Thanks!
Let’s hope Suunto will survive the latest job cuts and probable move of most of their business to China! Great review
I'm pretty sure Suunto will survive. They'll just be in a different country.
I really not hoping they move to china, then suunto never will be an option. To get a watch made in europe is a dealbreaker
Is the climb guidance is also available for regular Race model? It seems different than before.
Wondering whether the latest HR will be released in Race this year
Did they fix the ability to prevent dim mode for a specific sport. If I attach my race to the bike handlebars and go cycling then it would go dark after a few seconds which makes it a useless bike computer. Need to turn the crown to revive the display.
Yeah reached out to suunto support on this as option for always on on display was in my peak 5. They just claim been working on it but no specific data ..
When will it be available?
If they update the Vertical with the new HR sensor (maybe called Vertical Pro?) I'll upgrade from my Suunto 9. HR accuracy is the deal breaker for the existing Vertical...
Great video, which one u personallly buy suunto, gm 165 or gm 265 ?
Coros pace 3!
@@Ennis09 It was not on my radar, Will have alook, thanks 👍
Does it measure depth underwater for free diving
well done Suunto
Designed and made in Finland
It seems the barometric hole is located on the back and that's normally problematic. Can you confirm?
Hi Ray, can you help me? what would you choose this Race S or an Coros Pace 3. Thank You
Are the software updates here coming to the Vertical as well?
Yes
@@marektarkos2905 brilliant news - any ideas on a timeframe please?
@@marektarkos2905Weird can't find any post or content stating if or when Race will get these updates...?
@@pritchoutdoorsmaybe next week red in suunto forum.
Can you turn off wrist gesture to wake the screen and just turn it on with "touch to wake"?
Does the software upgrades come to the Vertical? I’d love that watch face with complications!
Yup!
@@Dcrainmakeramazing. Thanks Ray
Is there a time frame for the upgrade. I’ve only just got the Race Titanium last week.
it may not be as much as we want it to be but with a chest belt it works a lot better as with everything that supports a belt if you don't mind the fact that it has a gorilla and not a sapphire you are ok it seems fine to me
I want to believe the new sensor would change things for weight lifting activity which it kinda did for my first workout. But after the update totally dumpster dive. Now igot wait for a update to correct this. Dang Ray i had i hopes for this watch after watching this video. Now im wondering is Des getting the same hr data😢
Suunto welcome back to home. 🇫🇮
I noticed that the Free Diving is limited to 10M based on the specifications listed on Suunto's website. That works out to be 1ATM, is that correct? Considering the size and construction of the watch that is extremely low. I was wondering if it was a typo.
It is correct and is actually intended for snorkeling and mermaiding, not freediving.
If you are interested in freediving (hello fellow freediver!) and want something from Suunto, you should be looking into the new Suunto Ocean (a do-it-all like the Garmin Descent range) or a more traditional dive computer like the Zoop Novo, D4f, or D5.
From what I understand, the dive computers (including the Suunto Ocean) have a dedicated depth sensor, whereas the sports trackers are just getting creative with it's barometric altimeter to measure water pressure in addition to air pressure.
For clarity, the 10m limit is just for the depth readings from the sports trackers' altimeters. The watch cases themselves are water resistant to 50m or 100m depending on the model (but not dive rated of course).
@@suntzuthesecond Thank you for the clarification! I didn't even realize that it measured depth at all, that's a nice feature.
Looking my FR255 on my wrist....👀
so will the bigger Race be getting a upgrade soon?
Race S or a Forerunner 955 (which is available for similar price) for a runner?
I have the same question ; ) which is better for setting adaptive training plans, and better to estimation readiness for training ?
What watch do you use?
Can't find if this feature is on the new generation op Suunto watches (race and vertical).. is it possible to broadcast the heart rate?
Cheers
sadly not. :(
@@Dcrainmaker that a shame. For me the reason not to buy this watch at the moment. Every other box is ticked.
Is there a titanium version?
Should be later this year 💪
That issue with pairing multiple sensors is so frustrating! I can't believe they haven't fixed that after all these years! 😡
When you will try to test Suunto Ocean ?
Oh...I've been trying. Suunto's been trying. Sadly, UPS has very much not been trying. Two weeks trying to get a watch somewhere where I was diving...only to have it arrive after I left. Sigh. Figuring out my next plans.
Are you going to review the Suunto Ocean?
I've been searching everywhere for one and was hoping Ray will have it. I was supposed to pick up a Garmin Mk2s this week and deferred my plans while I consider the Suunto Ocean, but the lack of reviews (and shops with display units) so far have been frustrating.
@@suntzuthesecond It appears Ray had one to review and literally lost it in the ocean so he said the review is coming, just delayed. Probably waiting to get a replacement from Suunto. Really interested to see if they improved on the lag like they seem to have done with the Race S.
@@davidcampos5878 Yes. Technically, I didn't lose it in the ocean. UPS did. Somewhere between Finland and the Greek Islands I was in, it went missing with a message that it was a "remote service area". It hasn't been seen in a week.
@@davidcampos5878 I came across a 'first impressions' video in Spanish showing the Suunto Ocean and Suunto Race scrolling, side-by-side. It makes the Ocean look very compelling and seems to be everything the Race should have been launched with, but I'm still looking for an honest review - or trying it out myself - before I'm convinced.
@@Dcrainmaker That's unfortunate but I appreciate the explanation. Hope it gets sorted out soon!
@davidcampos5878 To answer your question, I came across a Spanish-language 'first impressions' video that compared scrolling the Suunto Race and Suunto Ocean side-by-side. It looks like they've finally fixed it, but I'm waiting to see it for myself (or hear it from an honest review) before I can be convinced.
Did Suunto send you a Suunto Ocean? Would love to see a video on that v the Garmin Descent Mk3i 😊
Sent...yes. Received...it's lost...somewhere, literally in the ocean (not kidding). But eventually...
😳
@@Dcrainmakerwait what 😳😳😳😳
@@Dcrainmaker hopefully the ocean it’s lost in isn’t too deep 😂😂 Looking forward to seeing the review. I hardly dive any more, but the thought of having a sports watch that can also cover any diving I do is very appealing!
@@Dcrainmaker do you know which of their sports watches it's based on? Is it basically a Race but made diveable?!
When’s the Garmin Instinct 3 coming. I need to know haha 😂😂
I can't wait as well! It must be very soon, seeing the massive discounts on Instinct 2 lately.
That's what I'm waiting for as well
Any word on a vertical S!? Asking for a friend 😂
The only thing i don’t like is gorilla glass. Hopefully titanium with sapphire glass will come
Will the race get the new software update
Yes
No link ? 😢
Then this Suunto watch still has problems in HR?
I’m confused, did you watch the accuracy section?
@@Dcrainmaker maybe I didn't understand well, but in the second HR graph, the Suunto Race S curve was very different from Apple Watch Ultra 2 (which it's the benchmark?)
What is your take on Amazfit fitness watches?
Every time I try them, I'm reminded why they're a fraction the cost. Here's a quick review I did on a reasonably recent watch to explain why: www.dcrainmaker.com/2023/06/amazfit-cheetah-pro-gps-watch-quick-review-thoughts-after-using-it-for-a-week.html
@@Dcrainmaker Thank you! I watched a bunch of your reviews and settled on the COROS Pace 3. You're reviews are so detailed and thorough. Thank you! Subscribed!
Should I buy Race or Race S? The price doesn't matter but Race S is 70€ cheaper. I will use it for daily use, durability and build quality is number one priority.
I’d go race S.
Can you pay with it?
Still no multi power meter support? 😢
Nope :(
@@Dcrainmaker literally the only thing that’s stopping me recommending the Suunto range to everyone I know. (I have a Suunto race titanium and love it). Would like vo2 guesstimating for cycling too, but that’s a nice to have.
Release date? Can't buy it @suunto
Dude, you need to get more sleep. Hope you and the family are doing well 👍
Up till last night, I averaged like 9hrs a night for the previous week! Then it all went downhill…
My comment has nothing to do with this watch, but rather with garmin quickfit braceletes. Do you find them safe in the water ? Can they come off by themselves?
The climb feature is absolutely useless for all of us living in NL. I am on Garmin but this watch looks great.
You're right, still I would like to own a smart fitness watch. Also I'm going hiking in Germany in september, so then we'll some mountains 😉.
Am I the only one who just bought a Suunto Race annoyed to see it does not have this software improvement yet ?
It will shortly. It's only been a few days.
I think it's suunto race not suunto race s? @@Dcrainmaker
Used them for a long time, various sports and the watch was awesome. But, the straps are second rate, wear quickly, replacements take too long to arrive and the fit is inadequate, so I was forced to change to Garmin which is also an awesome piece of kit with straps that are superior.
I’ve got a 5 year old Baro with straps that refuse to die, yet my Garmin straps fall apart within months.
Luck of the draw eh.
Are those softwear things will be on Vertical 🥹🥹??
Ugh. Bought the Race 10 days ago. 😢
There is literally a new watch each day. You can't keep up. Enjoy the Race. Good watch.
@@jbincanada the updates will come to your watch as well.
Well, no reason to buy polar now. Cheapest watch with mapping.
Edge 1050?
to say that that hr sensor is good is a big BIG lie
garmin 1050 when? :)
welp. still absolute garbage HR.
Since Suunto is app-only and I can't see and analyze my workouts on a decent screen, it's out forever
This is an odd Garmin Edge 1050 review
Where is the NFC chip? Suunto, c'mon!!
Says it's not going for Garmin, points out wants lacking in the maps.
Garmin 265 has all the maps missing for £399
Starting to lose faith in these videos now😢
Huh?
You say it's not going for Garmins blood but then show it has better maps(no street names) than the Garmin 265(it has none) and it's around £70 cheaper.
If that not going for Garmin what is?
Weird you don't point this out or does the 265 have maps now.
Every watch that I like (price and HR accuracy) looks SUPER feminine. Good grief.
To get a proper looking watch (that does the job, too), I'm looking at a minimum of $600 (Polar Grit) to $1,100 (Garmin Epix).
But a Garmin Epix doesn’t cost $1,100?
@@Dcrainmaker Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2) to be more specific...with the saphire
