  • Marie Doro (born Marie Katherine Stewart on May 25, 1882, dying October 9, 1956) was an American stage and film actress of the early silent film era. A famous stage actress who gambled on early Hollywood, she became a recluse and by the end of her life, even her friends could not reach her.
She was first noticed as a chorus-girl by impresario Charles Frohman, who took her to Broadway with little objection from her divorced parents, where she also worked for William Gillette of "Sherlock Holmes fame", her early career being largely molded by these two much-older mentors. She called the both of them hypnotists later in life, and you can learn more about both men and their Svengali abilities on this channel.
Although generally typecast in lightweight feminine roles, she was in fact notably intelligent, cultivated and witty. The press credited her girlishness and youthful grace. She was also a songwriter.

First bio on her I've seen. I'd love to know more about her, as she sounds multi faceted and interesting. I wonder how she amassed her wealth after leaving pictures/acting. $90,000 was a huge sum when she died in the early 1950s. Thank you for this video!

You're so welcome. Doro appears to have accumulated her money through her decades of consistent work. You're right that there is very little about Doro: as a female composer you'd think she'd receive more attention but it seems her music has never been performed after 1906.
