Wow, Maynard with just a rhythm section! Never seen or heard of anything like this before. And only 14 comments. Apparently very few people know about this. I really like the studio version with the full big band, but this was a really special treat.

Maynard had so many great pianists-Jaki Byard, Jeff Lashway, Christian Jacob, Allan Zavod, Pete Jackson...

I love Pete Jackson. His piano playing is such a Maynard signature sound.

Maynard the leader.. MF was great at taking a tune or an arrangement and making it work better than you could conceive on paper with whatever he had around him at the moment.

Got to see the Boss quite a few times, different band personnel and even at rehearsal at Local 47. Never have seen him in this type of band configuration, I like it!

Bill, this the first I've seen this offered up. Maynard loved that valve trombone. Did his best improvisation on it. Great arrangement of El Dopa!

Fantastic! Would've been great if there was a tenor sax too.

Maynard could really blow Jazz. Even if I had his chops? (which I don't) It would take me a lifetime to learn improvisation as well as The Boss did.

The song is actually called "L-DOPA" all capitalized, like the drug used in the Robin Williams movie "Awakenings." Such an interesting setting for MF!

Is that Randy Jones on drums? And does anyone know who the bassist is?

Thanks, so all three sidemen were personnel on the album "MF Horn" which contained the studio version of "L-Dopa." There is an alto solo by Pete King in that tune that is one of the most amazing sax solos I have ever heard!

Piano Teacher and Math Tutor Yes, MF had a great band in the UK. I was lucky to be 2 years in a band with John Donnelly, who was also in that MF band, blowing lead trumpet in my left ear!!

So I am actually replying to a member of the MF band... cool! Wanna here something great for this guy writing back - I've gotten to know Bruce Johnstone personally. I am sponsoring his coming to my high school alma mater to give a clinic and concert, both of which I will be a participant - as pianist! I went to his home recently to go over some tunes which was itself and honor. But he is such a nice guy I felt at ease playing with him almost immediately. L-Dope is such a favorite of mine that I wrote an arrangement for our small ensemble to perform.
Would you mind emailing me at 88keysevans@gmail.com? I would love to ask you some questions about the band during that era. And thanks for identifying Dave Lynane.

Not "El Dopa". The title is "L-Dopa". It's a drug reference

Look up "Powerhouse Pop" by one of his orchestrators, Keith Mansfield. This sounds like he's ripping off - or at least riffing off - that song. It's outstanding, of course.

He didn't play that past that era I guess it was too hard
