I'm so glad you learned of John Prine...a treasured human to so many of us. His songs are relatable to all of us regardless of age or gender or anything else for that matter. John's words are pure poetry set to melody. Maybe you can listen to "Souvenirs", "One Red Rose", "Clay Pigeons". Covid took him from us in 2020...he was 73....RIP John.
I have been a John Prine fan for a long time and had the good luck to see him a number of time. the humor and goofyness of some tunes and the sadness. I was 19 the first time I saw him and 70 the last time down at the Swanee Music fesitval. Two years later the pandemic hit, and John passed away that winter- it was awhile before my eyes stopped watering up when I heard his music, I now hear his creations and smile again .
I meant to see Mr. Prine at the Edmonton Folk Festival as he was booked..alas he passed before that opportunity came. Go see the musicians you love, first, second, third chance, etc you get.
I saw him in LA in 2013, small venue (Orphium I think) so he was close. He was awesome. Loudon Wainwright III even opened for him, with only his acoustic!
John Prine walked among the giants and was truly a poet and a wonderful storyteller. RIP: John❤🔥 "John Prine - Knockin' On Your Screen door (Official Video)" Lovely reaction thanx Rory
*Rory.* Thanks for the comparo. Now here's Bonnie again - performing the song nearly *50 yrs later* ...pushing 70. With the *actual* perspective and reflection of an old woman: ua-cam.com/video/qnFZlEYU7XY/v-deo.html
Great to see more Prine! I agree that it doesn't happen so often anymore for somebody to write a song from the other gender's perspective, or from a totally alien view to their own. A couple good songs you might like that don't get talked about so much are 'Late John Garfield Blues' and 'They Oughta Name a Drink After You.' Prine had surgery on his throat in the 80s, which changed his voice significantly. Some time later, he re-recorded some old songs for a new release. They sounded brilliant, and Late John Garfield Blues was one of them. Both versions are fantastic.
What can you say about John Prine. He's an absolute treasure whose writing alone touches your soul, makes you laugh, and makes you cry. There are so many times he writes from other folk's perspectives, but checkout "Unwed Fathers" for another gem.
You should check out some Blaze Foley. "Clay Pigeons", "June or September", "You'll Get Yours Aplenty", "WW3", "Oval Room", "Election Day" are some great ones.

John Prine is on my Mt Rushmore of greatest American songwriters along with Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Robert Hunter.

Simpler Dylan is how I think of his lyrics also. I love John and miss him. He was so humble and beautiful. His words mean so much to me.
John Prine is the best!!! Hello in there and clay pigeons are musts!
One of the best songwriters ever. Bonnie Raitt's 1970's performance is amazing.
Spectacular
RIP John
We know you are up there drinking a cocktail and smoking a mile long cigar
Vodka and ginger ale!

That’s a good damn comparison, if Bob mixed with the Beatles.
