The only true "natural born winner" the racing world has ever known. His gift for going fast on anything he rode was really something to see and experience.
He was fired from Yamaha... Sadly, but anyway he is a Yamaha man like many others guys. Yamaha was crazy on let go the tandem kanemoto-spencer and Mick Doohan.
Baker has the kind of humility that belies an ocean of talent. Top guy. Yamaha Motor Canada dropped the ball. His TZ750 tracker (yes, he rode that beast, too) is a thing of exquisite beauty.
Yamaha till nowadays takes bad desitions ... After having fired Steve ... Came the tandem kanemoto-spencer... They didn't want them (but they gained something with the Lawson pickin up, after that... A guy called Michael Doohan who Yamaha didn't want to promote to 500 cc and honda took advantage of that, and the worst mistake ... Of being the brand with more sportbikes on the 500 cc grid at 80s... To becoming in a 4 bikes brand which only one bike works of and loosing talented guys like nakasuga, nohzane, gerrloff, locatelli, toprak, in his moment Josh Hayes and many other riders around the world.
Of course he was a great rider, but also the only factory rider in the 750cc where he became world champion. In 1978, when himself raced for a private team, guess what...he did not win anything !!
FABULOUS RACER AND A GREAT GUY

Steve was the best of the best at the time - Yamaha were crazy to let him go.

Watched him race at Mosport in Canada in '77. I do believe he beat Kenny Roberts at the race I was at. Jeeze he was fast..
What a style! Thanks Steve #32!
saw you in the uk not forgot
Best of the best. Narrow powerband, narrow ass hard tires, shitty suspension. Balls of steel.
Steve finished, and then everyone else came in.
Yamaha got rid of him and then keeps someone like rossi see they are still not very well organised after all these years
