This is an awesome opportunity for anyone to see why "#32 Stevie Baker" is held in such high regard, quite simply - he was the "real deal" back in 76'. I was lucky enough to attend all the "Easter Match Races" but what Steve did at the 76' Race of the Year at Mallory Park hadn't been seen by us Brits before, he didn't just win against Sheene/Ago/Read/etc he absolutely blitzed everybody on a track he didn't know. I was sat on the roof of the toilets at the hairpin because that's where all the wheelies happened and when Steve was disappearing down "Devils Elbow" the rest of the pack were just going into the "Esses" at the end of the back straight leading up to the hairpin, he did that in 3 laps if I remember rightly and for those of us UK fans that had the privilege, he is remembered with great respect and held in very high regard.......
+therealmrcheese: Maybe not, but thing's were different back then - when fans didn't think about how easy a track was to remember & with Mallory it's the bumps that get you, not where the track goes! In the cold light of day, he turned up to a track he'd never seen before & made all the other TOP racer's of the era that were also there, look like they were riding mopeds! I was 14 or 15ish at the time, of course I was impressed.....
True, around that time he was the best. I never saw anyone drift a bike more than he did at Oulton in the Match Races. Don't know why Yamaha dropped him.
Guaranteed that if you were the same age of any of the riders that passed you they never would have asked you great ride always Steve best that ever come out of Washington State that includes Brad Baker
The guy in front of him got out before Steve did ended his ride. Steve Baker was good at learning where to go. ❤. Oh Stevie B. Barry Sheene friend!!! Great job Steve Baker!!!
+therealmrcheese Seriously? What's your name? You were freakin' hauling arse!! SB is not easy to pass and you made him look like he was standing still.
Jim Downie I thought it was really weird and 4strokey low down, but having never ridden an OW31 I've only heard one from a spectators point of perspective but it's logical to think it would sound different when you're on it! Then again OW31's were never designed to be ridden like a road bike which is how Steve rode it, strokers don't like not being revved but he was giving it just enough beans to not fluff the plugs or drown it so I thought it was a brilliant ride as you daren't let it rip because it's just too fast.

to be fair tho Mallory isnt exactly hard to remember! only about 6 corners on the whole massive 1.6 mile track! ;-) lol
