I use a cheap yoga mat when I plant out or weed. I can reach, lean, change positions, scootch and not have to move it every foot! My do pg also loves to lay on it next to me while I work. And its easy to hose off.
It's really refreshing to see so many of your tools are made by you or family - you don't just buy things, you investigate and engineer suitable things!
Glad you listen to your intuition about critters. I live on 4 acres that are wooded, house and flower beds centrally. I have gone 15 years unscathed...this winter the deer cleaned house! Even my lilacs, seriously? Ugh. Now the chipmunks have moved in and are literally swiping tulips everywhere. It's like a cartoon out there. Here one minute, bloop, gone the next! And they are resistant to EVERYTHING. little jerks!
Hey! Off subject... But, have you ever seen big sunflowers in the garden with bright sunglasses on them?l thought with your love for funky sunglasses that'd be a fun conversation piece for display at your bouquet bar. 😂 They look so cheerful and fun!
I agree with you about chickens destroying all your hard work! You are such an inspiration! I am from Buffalo, NY, and live in San Antonio, TX now. I am soooo glad I found you. You crack me up. You're hilarious!!! Thank you!!!
Great share. Lots of hard work, but I hope it works well. I am in zone b also in Maine and last year, we were in the 90s for about 2 weeks strait. Many blessings.
Love you, your funny and sweet. Cant wait to see the beautiful phlox. I have 2 varieties , had them for years. They always do very good for me, i do get a little mildew midew, but i have so many they hide the ugly. I live in northeastern Oklahoma, cold in w6intet, very hot and humid in summer
You are truly AMAZING!!!! Things are looking SO GOOD!!💚🤗 I just Love your videos🥰 Waiting with you Anxiously for All those Tulips to show their Beauty. Your chickens & you crack me Up🤣
Powdery mildew spreads with the wind and stays in the soil.My suggestion is take one of those garden feeder sprayers fill with milk. Spray as soon as leaves emerge, again midsummer and end of season. I haven't had it in years.
Good morning Nicole!! Blinds are great for short term markers but sadly, I learned, not so great for outdoors for any length of time. Winter is not kind to them. You will find many that have snapped and are broken unless you push them all the way down into the ground or use them to plant inside the hole for when you dig up the variety of plant that is there. I had over 200 daylilies marked with them and thank goodness that I made a map of the area last fall because this spring many of them are missing, snapped and broken, or just crumbled away and faded. Using a garden marker will definitely help to keep the name on there. Sharpies will fade out in just one short season. I now use them for my seeding indoors only.
Baby, you are amazing. So much great energy. I'm going at a fraction of your pace - I hope the weather has been as good for you as it has been for us in Oneonta. Warmest hug Jennie
I use old window blinds the same way! You are so fortunate to have such wonderful family helpers - do you keep them in flowers all season as a thank you? 😊😉🤣
I’ve used window shades as garden labels for years and if I remember right the sharpie marker fades. I write on them with pencil, that stays for years and never come off even through winter. ☮️-Kirsten
Love it! That will work to hold those shade perennials over until their space is ready and the chickens are contained in their palace. The Pitt Poultry Palace 😂😂 - home of Nicole’s attack chickens.
You are getting so much accomplished 🙌🏻 I put my sweet peas out yesterday. I hope they are not bothered by the cold nights because finding frost cloth is an issue. I’m probably going to have to order it just as a back up plan.
Love to see things coming up for you!!! Saw a video from Living Traditions Homestead, they built a 2nd fence around their garden as a "moat". Their fences aren't as high as yours, but said deer don't have great depth perception. Maybe that could help your beds too?
I’ve seen that. It’s sometimes called a 3D fence. I was going to implement something like that around the wildflower field possibly this year- depending on cost!
I started to finally get blueberries when I pulled them out of the ground and potted them. They need acid loamy soil and moisture. I have heavy clay that is just not good for them. Lost raspberries to some disease. Trying blackberries. I hate to spray anything but I may have to use a fungicide this year.
Hey! 💡 If the soil gets too hot under that Phlox, you could always put mulch over top to keep it cool down under. Yesssss, before you ask... That IS what they do in Australia. They use mulch down under. Yes They DO!! Really, they do. Im just sayin, they do... Sorry, I guess I'm making A-Runcus about the mulch... 🙈
I was going to say- chicken tiller. This would work perfectly for that. Put your chickens where you're going to plant. They will weed, eat bugs and poo... and then move them to the next spot.
It would be beautiful to plant your sweet peas on your deer fence! Plus it would be efficient use of valuable real estate and you have a sturdy reusable support.😄😄
But Nicole, raspberry is a good greenery plant for bouquets. Also, they might come out bit later than normal since they are newly planted. Dont rush, raspberry rarely dies.
I've seen a burn tool where they fit a tin can around the torch. It just seems like there has to be a better way. Maybe with a large washer attachment you can change out the tin can sizes to what you need. Might be worth a UA-cam search. I bet Brad Pitt could design something for you. ;)
I live in Minnesota Zone 4 and I think you'll find the fabric actually keeps the ground cooler than it would be without it 😊 Kind of like how mulch keeps the ground cooler. At least that's my experience. Best of luck to ya!
Don't feel bad about giving the raspberries and blueberries the boot. You'll thank yourself. I work for a big berry farm where our rows are 350 yards long each with 250 acres planted in just raspberries, blueberries and boysenberries. Raspberries can attract all kinds of awful pests, which could end up devouring your flowers. If you want to go to the trouble to replant your blueberries, then check your ph. They need an acidic soil. If you plant them too near flowers that you use compost on, it will affect the ph and then your blues won't produce.
I just checked your product list. I wear through my garden gloves so fast. Would you please post your recommendation on what to get for heavy duty planting like I see you do. :)
AHHHH everything looks so good!!!!!! You’re doing an amazing job!!! My garden friend Gwen just gifted me some Variegated Solomon’s seal!! Are you putting the Solomon’s seal by your front porch? I also started astilbe from seed and bare root!!!
I have one with wheels and I almost never use it. Because it puts you up higher so you really crunch your gut and over extend your back to reach the ground. What we need is a way to hover (like in the Movie "Honey I Shrunk The Kids") so a few ropes and hoists and we're good. LOL
@@FlowerHillFarm btw, I've been using landscape fabric and it works really well in my microclimate, helping to warm the soil and maintaining moisture underneath. I think we have similar summer weather, so hopefully you'll be really happy with using a lot more of it this year.
You got so much done!! Gotta love them chickens who just want to scratch. Always said If I win the lottery I'm going to have a chicken mansion built. 🤣
I did the same thing with my dahlia tubers! I also tried my hand a propagating my dahlias!! Have you ever tried? More dahlias for free?!?! Love your videos!
How do you protect your back Nicole? Every day I come in from the field my back is on fire- primarily my lower back. I try to kneel and lean over- but even that causes it to hurt! Maybe I need a chiro 😂
Ahhh, I love your videos! Have you ever thought of using an auger to dig in the weed barrier holes? Seems like it would be much faster. Especially with the volume of planting you're doing. 🥰🌸🌻
Hi Nicole! Check out Bloom & Gray's UA-cam video - Prepping beds in the polytunnel. She has an awesome looking template that she uses to burn holes in the landscape fabric. I think Brad Pitt can make one for you! I think you would love her channel. 💜
Hey girl I am having my first Bouquet bar the Saturday before Mother’s Day, do you know if I can cut and refrigerate Iris to preserve their blooming until the sale.
I saw your Instagram story how the lilies are coming back. Mine are too but I have some asiatic and they’re kinda on the shorter side 12-18 inches so my question is would they be ok for cutting or no because you need to keep enough foliage for the bulb to produce another flower the next year. Thank you for your advice/help
They say you need to leave 8 inches on the stem in order for them to flower the following year. We will see how true that is with mine this year! Some I cut to the ground for stem length.
Have you considered cardboard and mulch to start knocking down weeds and grass rather than continuing to till and bringing up new weed seeds/ propagating more grass?
Why don't you plant your sweet peas so they climb up the deer fence you have already put up? It would save you space and you could always put some of the bird netting up on the outside of the fence to keep the deer from chewing on them from the outside.
You get so much work done in one day and you do it all with great humour and panache :) Question - how big do those aruncus get? I had ones that were huge so I got rid of them and purchased little bitty ones that grow to about a foot.
What is the temperature outside now when you are planting this stuff? Also, do you mist your seeds when you are waiting for them to germinate under the lights? Thanks!
Love your silliness and humor.

The bottom of a Pringles can also works great for making those holes in landscape fabric. Ask me how I know. haha
I recommend volleyball kneepads. They stay up well, even on bare legs, and are super cushiony.

Blueberries need low PH. if you plant it in peat moss, not dirt you'll get berries.
Please tell me the brand of grow lights you have over your seedlings. TY
I bought most of them here amzn.to/3tqDBP0
