This might just be my cynicism talking (although the tone of the song supports it somewhat), but I think this song is about the relationship between a guy and a girl, in which the girl--the speaker of the song--loves the guy but can't say it. He doesn't see her as a potential partner and is falling in love with other people, but it always goes wrong with them in the end somehow. The speaker probably has a role in these breakups/failures, judging from how she speaks about these other girls in relatively disparaging ways ("even if you really like her / and try to be her friend / she'll hurt you time and time again"). She's trying to keep the person she loves from being happy with someone else, even if doing so makes her feel terrible. After the relationships go south, the girl always consoles him and makes him feel better, but all the while she can't bring herself to express her own feelings for him because she knows he doesn't love her. She can't help trying to detach him from other people in order to keep him for herself, though, while all the while wondering if she's going to die alone. I envision it almost like an unhealthy, dependent relationship. The guy has become reliant on the girl's moral support after so many rejections/heartbreaks, and the girl--eternally unable to bring their relationship to the next level and hoping against hope for him to develop feelings for her--continues to offer her support with bated breath and a second face. Of course, I could be wrong, but those are the sort of feelings I got from this song.
