  • In today's video I’ll show you how to make a smart Air Quality #Sensor that works with #HomeAssistant. I’ll use this cheap and dumb Sensor from #IKEA called Vindriktning, as well as D1 mini and Tasmota firmware. The whole procedure is very easy and it will take you only few minutes to assemble everything. On top I will show you all of the needed steps in details so do not worry and let’s dive into it.

One issue with this sensor is at night it keeps the LEDs on. To fix this I started hacking these further by replacing the LEDs with 3 WS2811 LEDs that when the LUX is low it turns off the LEDs in tasmota. Then using tasmota rules to change the LEDs based on the levels. I've also really enjoyed adding sensors to this device. I'd send you a diagram and pics if you'd like. Been running these with a LUX sensor (BH1750), Temp and Humidity sensor (BME280). This sensor can also show the PM1 and PM10 levels, you just have to compile the options into tasmota: VINDRIKTNING_SHOW_PM1 and VINDRIKTNING_SHOW_PM10. Been really loving it! Excellent video!

You could put a bit of electrical tape over the LED's and just rely on Home Assistant to give you the readings and warnings.

Thank you for such an awesome tutorial. I have just finished automating a 20" X 20" box fan with a high efficiency air filter taped to it. I used to just keep it running 24-7. Now with the addition of the air quality sensor I should be able to get a greatly extended time between filter changes. Cheers from the dry, dusty desserts of Arizona.

Nice and clear instructions video, as always! I just suggest that connecting directly REST pin to D1 Mini should be a problem in the long run as the sensor (PM1006K) signal is 5V and the D1 Mini (ESP) port is 3.3V. So adding a voltage divider with 3 simple resistors will do the job and still fit inside the box. Greetings from Portugal.

ESP based sensors have been around in videos for years. BRUH Automation had a great one a few years ago when he use to make videos with 3D printed case.
I do like the Ikea case. It is really quite good. The only issue I have with ESP based sensors is getting power to them neatly. Especially if you include a motion or light sensor in the "multi sensor" and you need to put it up on a wall somewhere. Batteries are just not a good option in ESP based sensors, even using sleep modes.

Thank you for the good explenation- I tried to rebuilt it, but I do not get the Quality level - even not at the Tansmota side of my D1-Mini
Any idea what I made wrong? - I found it: it was a too massive soldering of the ground wire touching the condensator near by.
Proble I observe now is that the update rate in HA is much lower than the one I can get at the D1-Tasmota-Interface. Any idea how to increas the update rate in HA?

    •  4 місяці тому

I had the same issue, thanks for the hint.
It is really easy to "touch" other components with the soldering.
Now the sensor is working perfectly, tanks for the tutorial.
Do you know where can I check the configuration for openHAB?

    My classic luck ...
Used a NodeMCU ESP8266 (specifically AZDelivery 3 NodeMCU Amica V2 ESP8266 ESP-12F) with Vindriktning. Wasn't working with Chrome flash thing, so i used Tasmotizer with all-sensor.bin. Everything working fine but no output ...
I try to connect a BM680 and all readings show. Vindriktning in the meanwhile is working fine (lights ok, reacting as intended).
I try to resolder the "Rest" pin in the Vindriktning (no luck).
I try and switch the pin in the ESP8266, but BM680 is always working and Vindriktning is not showing even using the same D pins.
Looks like the "Rest" pin in the Vindriktning is not giving any output. Is it possible? I did not find anything on this issue on Internet, so maybe i'm the only one ...
BTW ... your tutorial is the best i found !!!
