  • I pieced together a convoluted scheme to go to Roadkill Nights where I was trading my 1972 Lincoln for a Dodge Magnum and for the deal to work i needed to get the Lincoln to Michigan where I was going to attend Roadkill Nights and hit the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Jersey and PA have also cracked down big-time on the need to leave a full lane's-width between your car and any police or fire vehicle/personnel parked on the shoulder and actively working. It's like a $200-250 fine if you CAN change lanes, but choose to brush by them instead.

I think it was a fair trade, being a mechanic and knowing about dodgy 70s FMC electronics, that most likely was not O'Reilly fault, if I remember always had issues there solenoids and especially when they got heated up, my Mercury Monarch use to eat solenoids. I had a 1975 Lincoln Mark 4 . they were gas hogs. 1972 may have had the 429 CID or the 460 CID. Mine had the 460 CID,, 8 mpg on the highway. His Dodge Magnum looked like a 360 CID , a gas hog also likely 12 or 14 mpg on the highway. Do the math , I guess $3000 for gasoline , one way , N.J. to Anchorage in a Lincoln mack 4 !

      @herrunsinn774 4 роки тому

Ha... That reminds me of my parents who grew up in the "pre-Interstate" era. There were relative few multi-lane roads back then. At that time (according to my parents), the left lane was the "through lane" and the right lane(s) were the "turning lanes". So it was considered "good driving" to drive in the left lane if you had no intention of turning.
They carried that belief into the era of Interstate highways. I used to cringe when they would drive mile-after-mile in the left lane, thinking it was the proper thing to do.
Apparently this guy was taught by aging parents that the left lane is the "through lane". He was clueless.

These Lincolns were wonderful cars; and anybody that refuses to do basic maintenance on any car; should not be a dealer.
I agree with the other posters; that the exhaust leak; makes the Lincoln , sound like a dump truck. Idiot, exhaust leak , right above the starter, and this starter has the solenoid mounted on top of the starter. OMG how much heat was the starter exposed to, during this trip?? And then trying to blame O'Reilly's.
I would bet this wannabe dealer, painted the air cleaner to match the car. Also, Do you think, he even noticed that the windshield wipers did not park properly. He could never figure out how to time, that wiper and park mechanism. That procedure is tricky.
Then to trade the Lincoln for that!
Well, do basic maintenance, before hitting the road with any car.
How many of you have jotted down the Dealer plate number; a PA plate; so that you can check that, if you are considering purchasing any car from these people.

You took a Lincoln that had very low miles on it and are surprised that it does crap like throw fanbelts on the highway when you're flying along at 75+?
This is an antique car. Look at the patina in the rearview mirror: every other part of the car is showing its age in some way. Drive it slowly and gently while you wear the rust off the fanbelt pulleys so you don't overheat the belt and break it. Be ready for belts and fuel pumps and other parts with rubber components to fail no matter how well the car was kept. And remember that when a brake line lets go during an emergency stop, the Lincoln or the Magnum will destroy that Corolla carrying kids to summer camp - do you really want to make the news? "A tragic accident just outside of Toledo has left 4 children dead..." Keep the old lady in the right lane.
Your starter issues were something else, and I do not know enough to tell if you were dealing with sticking brushes on starters which probably sat on a shelf in the store for years (!) or if there was something else going on.
Set up your cameras before you hit the road. You're a driver, not a photographer.
The Magnum was a nice trade. It's a much more rare car, and while it doesn't get the respect a Lincoln Mark V or a Cadillac Eldorado gets, it was the sporty version of the oh-my-God-what-a-nice-freeway-car Chrysler Cordoba. Anyone who has ever driven a Cordoba knows what a comfortable car it is, and how it's the sort of car that just makes you randomly drive from Jersey to California. The Lincoln feels like sitting on a sofa just outside the Oval Office. Both are great cars for different reasons. The Cordoba/Magnum feels like it just wants you to be there, in the driver's seat. It's a totally different feel from a Lincoln. Take good care of it.
I spent much of the summer of 2019 with a 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car. It's luxury without being really comfortable.

Yes a magnum may be harder to find but a Lincoln is still worth more money considering the magnum was built during the heart of the gas crunch which made the 360 180 horsepower and the special order E58 360 4 bbl made 195 horsepower thus making the car unpopular. Followed by the fluctuating values of the car.
It's not that it was built bad (although the grille is plastic and some of the panels inside are made of cardboard). It's just that it was made in a bad era of cars. Also considering our family owns a magnum I have to say that yes it's a nice car because not very many cars had a digital clock and a delayed wipe system.

Life’s all about adventure, and you sure found some on this trip!
Aside from the problems you had with it, that Lincoln Mark IV was a beauty! Then when I saw what you traded for, a big grin spread across my face. I knew at first glance you had a Dodge Magnum there - I’ve always wanted one since the first one I saw back in ‘78. I love the Magnum’s look with its strong masculine front end. Even the car’s name oozes power! It’s got the 360 in it I’m thinking? During my last 2 years of high school thru my first year of college (1976-78) I drove a ‘74 Plymouth ‘Cuda 360 (yellow/black vinyl top/black interior). It was my second car. My first car back in the 10th grade (1975) was a pristine ‘71 Plymouth Barracuda that was medium (B5) blue/white vinyl top/blue interior.
The only disagreement I’ve got with that Magnum of yours is the drab brown color. I remember seeing one in triple black: black paint, black rear vinyl top, black leather interior - and T-tops. Gorgeous car. Magnum’s look good in silver, red, or dove grey too.

    1. You're driving a very old cars, very fast. Take it easy. Until you've done a complete restoration and made all the parts new, you're only asking for problems pushing that hard.
    2. If you're buying reman starters, keep in mind that you're choosing from a pool of cores that are as old as the car you're driving. Don't expect those to be anything other than trouble. Some wear can't be corrected no matter how good a reman job you do.
    3. If you're melting starter wires, you probably have an exhaust restriction causing high exhaust temps. I'm guessing a bad cat. But again, take it easy. Don't drive it so hard and you'll save yourself a lot of heartache.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colnbrook
My lad was in London 4 years ago when he by chance bumped into a man who had just sold the Caddy. He got 125,000 pounds for it! It cost my thousands to start the resto and I ended up giving it away practically. It was amazing, it had adjustable air suspension in 1960!! It was in a movie too, called "The Iron Maiden". Don't know what happened to the Lincoln but I've seen a few turned into lowriders and they look fabulous.
There was a group in Cardiff that drove Yanks (as we called them) one of my favorites was a boat tail Buick Riviera. Great days, I'll have to scan all my photos before I carc it. I imported and still own a 1973 Lincoln Continental Special Gold Plate edition from the USA to the UK where I live as a 40th birthday gift to myself 7yrs ago last month. Did full ground up restoration. Got the '73 as it's not only my fav car but it's the same vintage as me.
Mine is Midnight Charcoal with Silver Pearl overlay and full Black leather and Redwood Interior. Had no rust or rot. Just needed a refresh.
I'd not change it for the world . So Im very sorry to see you had these hassles with this '72. Damn man. Just ain't right.
Hope you really enjoy your new car it looks like a hell of alot of fun.

That's a really nice Lincoln - it looks fabulous! I know exactly where you are because we drove from northern NJ to Detroit last year for the Woodward Dream Cruise - in a 77 Firebird. Thankfully no problems with the car on the way there or the way back. but we did a lot of preparation work to the car leading up to the trip to make sure we'd be ok. That, and a box full of tools and AAA Premier in case! Luckily we never needed them. I know exactly where you are on these roads. Sorry about the problems you ran into. A really long trip in an old car is going to uncover any kind of reliability problem it has. I have made 500 mile + trips in several different 70s American cars for the last 20 years. The vast majority of the time I made it - but every once in a while I had a problem - usually if it was a car I had just bought and didn't know well. For those reading this who don't understand why you'd do this - you do it because you love the old cars and you want to do it!! It helps to be mechanically knowledgeable, which you obviously are. It just stinks that you ran into so many problems. And the starter problems - I never buy any critical car part that I really need to work from a discount place like O'Reilly, Advance, or AutoZone. In my experience NAPA is the best for important things like that. I also used to like CarQuest but they are gone now. The discount places are good if you want to buy oil, or wiper blades, or gaskets, but nothing critically important. It seems like somehow when the exhaust pipe came loose, the hot exhaust got onto the old starter and damaged it, which led to everything else you ran into and had to do.

Let this be a lesson to ANYONE looking to drive a classic.
Any car this old will need a lot of maintenance items replaced.
Hoses, all fluids, belts, should all be replaced as well as plug wires, possibly
all rubber flex brake lines and fuel lines as well as a rebuild of all
the brake cylinders and, in the case of this Lincoln, the
front calipers. Time is not kind to anything rubber in an old vehicle.
The exhaust on older cars was steel and rusted badly
over time so chances are it too will need replacing if you
hope to turn the car into a reliable driver you can take a 1000
mile trip with. No one in their right mind would take a car this
old on a trip without replacing a lot of parts like I mentioned.
