Many Pokemon Trainers ask the question: “Is it worth it to buy a World Championship Deck?” Replicas of the 60-card decks used by the World Champions of each year, World Championship decks are quite possibly the strongest, most finely tuned and competitive decks from their respective Standard.
However, due to their silver border and commemorative card back, the cards within them are not tournament legal and can only be played with friends in casual games.
So are these decks a good deal for new players? Casual players? What about enfranchised and experienced trainers? Or are they not worth your poke-dollars? Let’s take a look!
A World Championship deck contains the following: 1 world championship booklet, 1 60-card champion deck, a special 2016 world championships pin, and a world championship begin-quotes deck box end quotes deck box, which is a small cardboard box that won’t hold these cards if you sleeve them.
These are the exact decks played by the World Champions of the Pokémon TCG
100% identical, so for only $12.99 you are getting one of the best decks in Standard
for Pokémon TCG.
So the question is: WHY? Why buy these at all if the cards can’t be played with at Pokemon events and tournaments? Why spend money on cards you can’t play with at official events?
Well, the first answer to that is glaringly obvious: because the majority of players don’t play at official events or in tournaments, and so who cares if you are just playing with friends?
Final Thoughts:
While not tournament legal, Championship decks have many applications for new and established players alike.
They can serve as a learning tool, to experience and understand finely tuned competitive decks.
They are a great and affordable way to play with some of the best standard decks of the year without spending the price of those decks.
In many ways, multiple copies of these are like a Pokemon TCG board game, something you can sleeve up and take down from the shelf to play with friends who may not even have standard decks of their own.
Amazing for anyone looking for high level, competitive play, but not looking to ever go down to official tournaments and events.

Dylan A if you have a local game store id say try to go there and see if they have a land box for draft then ask the store if they mind you trading lands for it. none of the several i go to tend to care as long as they still have the same amount in them when you're done but stores vary in policies so again check with them first.
For a second I though they had brought back the MtG World Championship decks, and I was like "Yes, please!"
The Only thing better then gold bordered cards are silver bordered cards
Hey prof! Recently I subscribed to your Patreon. I just want to ask if the next Hangout is planned right now
The starter decks are bad but some of them are good, greninja
Thanks for the video! Do you know if these decks come with online codes in them?
Many Magic the Gathering players ask the question, oh shit, wrong game
I love how on the placemat, you put squirtle looking at amazement at the world championships box
At my gaming store those cards are use as a tool for a training experience for our new players. Is a good product.
I really wish Konami did this for Yu-Gi-Oh! for exactly this reason; it's a great way to get a ton of experience with competitive play in a card game before really becoming financially invested in it, which means a lot when most meta decks in something like Yu-Gi-Oh! range from $400-600 and a lot of my friends, and assuming a lot more people as well, see this as just too high of a barrier for entry for something that they might not even like after a couple weeks.
DarkFlice same
@@FliceTrance I wish too.
If WoTC did this with modern decks for Magic I would buy them all.
oh boy it would sell like water. it is an amazing ideia and keeps the game alive. image a $13 Modern Jund? AMAZING
Except the rules of Magic don't allow for the same card to be both silver and black bordered. Simply proxy cards to play with friends.
Vintage Anthology w/ silver boarder would sell like crazy
Garth Palmer Magic Proxies are gold bordered.
Affinity vs pod!
Really wish magic would bring these back for kitchen table players. Maybe I buy my son the Pokemon version for Xmas :)
Prof you should totally teach MaxmoefoePokemon how to play magic as he recently just opened a pretty good box of modern masters
Step 1: Build a deck!
Step 2: Put it into microwave!
Step 3: Profit???
He should just make a deck that consists only of his Snappy and his Scalding Tarn. Getting that 2-card-deck-value.
These decks are fun! Wish MtG still did this.
3:24 squirtle really lieks the deck box
3:21 That's the most adorable squirtle I've ever seen and I like how it looks directly at the deck.
Hello! I was sceptic when first watching this video, as I've always thought these decks were a waste of money, but you made some really great points about them! Great video! I really appreciate your awesome attitude in all your videos. -a big fan
I've watched quite a lot of your "Is it worth it..." videos, and I'm getting the impression that overall Pokémon TCG generally has better value products than MTG, with a few exceptions (Commander, Challenger decks). The fact that every paper product provides access to its online equivalent is also great, even if the cash value of online products is not that high.
Your enthusiastic Pokemon reviews have gotten my partner and I really into the game! We might actually end up ditching magic for this, since neither of us are that good at MTG anyway. Thank you for tipping us off on a great game and a great company! Happy to be your patron
Hey professor, my local card shop allows these cards to be used only if you have the original copies of the cards. The store owner checks if the card sleeves you use are fully opaque, and that you down in fact own the correct amount of cards needed in replication for your deck. This is handy for those who don't want to be shuffling their expensive cards and potentially damaging them. Obviously this can vary from store to store, but I thought it was a neat concept that other players should possibly look into to help preserve the life of their cards.
This may be an older video but I really liked it. 👍👍👍
Thanks man!
(2019 I just picked up a couple of the newest championship decks.)
I know this is late, but I just got my first one of these. It's the 2018 Victory Map deck. And it's enjoyable for exactly the reasons you said. It's been really fun to see how my own created decks match up this, and just have a good deck to allow a friend to use after being pretty new to the game. Thanks for another fun video Professor!
I work at an arcade in charge of the prizes. I don't actually play Pokemon, but Pokemon products are consistently in high demand for us. I've been getting the EX/GX boxes, but have recently decided to switch it up a bit with these champion decks. Having watched your videos on both products, I feel I'm better EDUCATED (haha bad joke) at what I should be stocking. I was a bit hesitant on getting the champion decks precisely because they're not tournament legal, and I know in the days when I DID play way back in its origins, I refused to play with people who did get these decks. However, your arguments are quite compelling, and I'm glad I made the switch. I'll still probably go for those big boxes too (shelf presence does help a product sell), but I'll make a point in looking up the particular cards. I never realized people preferred the special coin/figure/pin over the big card. I personally would love to have a big version of a card I would play, but I'm not the one in touch with this game's community.
I wish they would continue doing these for Magic...
I think they are good for the player who is interested in going to tournaments but has no idea what to expect at tournament level decks and wants to practice with friends for a while before jumping in that deep end
I have many years from mtg. I still play these decks against my decks to get a feel for how my deck does against different deck types.
Professor, I see youre a man of culture! I see Pokemon Adventures there
Indeed!
Michael Cabangbang the most dark pokemon experience ever
Michael Cabangbang I like your Calem profile pic
Snorlax and his buddies! Its supposed to be X but you know what? Youre right
Man I wish WoTC would bring these back for MTG
I used them as proxys in some tournaments at my local game store, it's very helpful especially when you don't have $100 to buy shaymins ajajajjajajja
Francisco Calderón Shaymin's are like $15 now.
Great video Professor! I can't wait to watch more videos in the future, especially booster box games and other pokemon related videos.
Cheers!
Chris
Thanks for the PTCG video! I recently started playing the game with my 6-year-old and have really enjoyed it. Keep them coming!
My friends and I have all taken to pokemon tcg as a good time to play and have a few drinks, these decks are pretty amazing that we dont have to drop a few hundred to get the repeats of staple trainers and can mess around to see what the game is actually like
Prof! Will you be doing a Burning Shadows Booster Box Game?
More Pokemon content please! A lot of your Magic content can apply. However, I enjoy Magic casually, but I enjoy Pokemon more especially competively. So having both is awesome!
I didn't know your name is Oak
Alex Shine Nah his name is Samuel Oak
You actually can play with these decks at some events! The most common pokemon tcg event is called Pokemon league. It's extremely casual, no tournament, no matchmaking, no prize support, just an open play environment where players of all skill levels can practice, trade, and earn promo cards just for showing up. Due to their casual nature, proxies like the world championship cards are pretty commonly used. While you can't by one of these decks and take a regional tournament, there are still plenty of in-store play opportunities for people who purchase these decks!
I love the Pokemon Special Manga in the background of your Pokemon videos.
"Luckily, PWC sleeves are sold separately... And they're not very good..."
Always true to your original calling, I see, Professor?
Bought the full set of these a few weeks ago: it's great to be able to play with the top decks with "real proxies" with friends and be able to play top tier decks. If only mtg did this with the pro tour
One of the best thing about these product are for competative players with multiple decks. While i build decks only with cards i can play in actual tournaments it lets me use those more expensive pieces in my other decks. Back when shaymin was 50 dollars plus, i owned 2 of them so i would use 2 proxy shaymins for other decks. And i also use them to teach kids at my league who are above the level my sleeved up starter decks but dont have money to buy all the cards they need to play competativly against my decks. Since i am a proffesor for pokemon its my job to teach them and these help a lot.
Your videos are always relaxing to watch keep up the good work
I really liked these decks! They were great to teach my kids higher level play!
I actually wanna see a video showing what Standard deck the Professor is currently running (if he plays Standard)
I agreed with everything you said. One thing I would add is that players coming back would benefit from this kind of product because like myself coming back after nearly 20 years the meta changes and these decks help you adjust and learn how the game has changed over time. i would just say to buy the current year or last years deck due to it going from Prime cards to EX to GX to PRISM here soon. Still an amazing amazing product to learn how to play the game at a competitive level.
You'd probably get pretty good playing 6 of these decks back to back to see what works in deckbuilding.
I feel that these decks are good for teaching newer players.
Pokémon themed background with Pokémon video = Flavor win!
I used to be a Pokémon collector and I really enjoyed opening these every year. I did convert to Magic a couple of years ago.
Many Magic the Gathering players ask the question: Would you want Charmander the fire type starter?
Love ya Prof
My starter is Chikorita.
Tolarian Community College This comment deserves more likes.
Tolarian Community College A man of great tastes
Yay, you are back into pokemon.
I thoroughly appreciate that alternative support is given to LGSs outside of MTG! Thanks XD
Starting to think people forgot that the professor does both magic and Pokémon and I wish magic would bring that back
Also nostalgia is a thing so the older the champion deck then more it will gain value and such. I wish more tcgs had products like this.
I wish MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, Cardfight Vanguard and Force of Will made products just like this. I love playing with my world championship decks against my little brother. I get to play the game at a high level and he gets to have fun playing Pokémon. The two best things IMO about card games is building your own deck, and playing with the best cards. It is super expensive to build your own deck with the best cards and moderately expensive to build your own casual deck. Championship decks are a cheap way to play with the best cards and I hope that they continue to be printed for years to come.
I bought one of these a while ago and I used it an some real cards go build my brother a deck for this years standard format to help him get into the game. That alone made it worth it, but the fancy pin to add to my collection didnt hurt either.
That moment you get home from a long days work on a Thursday, kick back, get comfy, go to the tolarian community college UA-cam channel to see another one of the professor's sweet mtg videos.... aaaaand it's a pokemon video....#feelsbadman....
Love the place of the cards in relation to the pokemon mat!
I would love to see a product like that for MTG.
Been waiting for the "Is it worth it to buy hour of devastation planeswalker decks" video!
Thanks for this video! Always love your videos, Magic as well as Pokémon!
Can you imagine how the Pokémon economy would be devastated if all these cards were legal?
masterchaosforge boi u could make like 187 dollars profit
Abhiram Srivastava Actually, it would be quite the opposite. If these were legal, then the price of the regular cards would drop severely. Why would you drop $40+ on one card when you can get a whole bunch of competitive cards in a $12 deck? The fact that they aren't legal greatly helps the secondary market.
@@jeremyeggers1121 let's be honest if they were real they would sell them for top $$$
I wish both MTG and Pokémon TCG did this but printed real, legal versions of the cards. If they genuinely did not care for the secondary market, and mass printed several tournament level decks, I feel they'd make a killing.
Also holy Horsea haircut I forgot you tweeted that the other day!
This is, if the secondary market dies, either the game dies, or its MASSIVELY affected. I wish for no secondary market bullsht too. But i recognize its a fool's hope.
Planeswalker Project without the secondary market, players would have to buy packs to get the cards they want. Isn't that worse?
Reprinting old cards make them less valuable. There is value and enjoyment in collecting rare cards.
Yugioh does this and the secondary market there is completely messed up, also it drives the prices of valuable singles into the hundreds of dollars when they come out, so overall deck cost is not really down until Konami reprints staples in decks
Many people play magic because it's a generally safe investment: if you spend thousands over the years playing it, you can generally sell out and either break even or close to it. Killing the value of all of their cards makes it less appealing to players, also players won't buy packs if everyone can just buy a competitive deck for $10-$20, the company would go out of business
yugioh forces u to at least buy at least 35 dollars (3structure decks) worth of cards before even having a remotely competitive deck
Thank you for this vid, i didn't even know that these kind of deck existed.
I like using these for proxies for decks that I want to make. At my local leauge, we have a lot of younger kids so the guy who runs it has said that using proxies there is alright. When I make my decks what I do is I'll start out with a deck majority made of either these or the printed version proxies and as I get the cards I'll swap them out.
I wish that Konami offered these for Yu-Gi-Oh!. It would make it so much easier to bring something like this down to my locals so people could help me figure out all of the card combos and get in a bunch of games with the deck so I can see if I really like it enough to play it for the next 4 months before deciding to drop $300-500 on the real thing. That and it would be really useful for getting friends, who don't really play Yu-Gi-Oh!, to play with me for a few games without having to either play a poorly built deck or having to provide another high budget deck.
i dont see why u cant just print yugioh proxies?
i play a lot of my friends and they just use black and white printed proxies
I remember buying these as a kid, they were a good time
Wow Prof, this is already your 500th video.
Your vest is messing with the camera and my head haha. I own 2 or these decks and I love them. I've never noticed the signatures on the cards.
Thanks Prof for all the hard work you do with MTG and Pokemon. Just started getting into Pokemon, vids are helpful for me understanding the best way to get into Pkmn TCG. I assume YuGiOh is not a TCG covered by your channel. Which is ok, because I know MTG is the big kahuna. Brings me to a valid question of any recommendations for a good channel for YGO noobs? Recently got a few assorted YGO TCG merch, trying to sort out if and where to begin with that. Really love your coverage of MTG and Pokemon.
i would loooooooooove to be able to buy tier 1 MTG decks with silver borders to play casually for 12.99
Back in the day I got a couple for $10 each. The Finkle and Hermit decks. My LGS had some older championship cards for $5-$10 each
A crying shame these have been discontinued. They just stopped making them after 2019.
they are being made again :)
Excellent review prof! I wish magic the gathering would still offere these. Though it’s a shame that in italy the street price for 1 pokémon championship deck is 25€! To buy all 4 of them with proper sleeve and box means spend 150€. Repeat every year. It’s arguably attractive to collect them when with the same money you can buy a non-proxy, tournament legal deck and play it at your lgs
im switching from yugioh starting today a world championship winning deck is only $100-$200 my yugioh BUDGET decks cost me that much thanks professor im only about 2:00 minutes in the video and thanks to it now i can stop looking for a replacement game, me and my wallet thank you! (oh imma take worlds by storm just you wait...eventually )
HE GAVE THE CODE AWAY THE ABSOL-UTE MAD MAN
How much land should i play?
40%, so 24 in a 60 card deck.
Max Mustermann what if my highest cmc is 3?
Then play 20
depends on your mana curve. do you run more 0-1 drops or 2-3 drops? if the former, then probably 20 to 21, while if you have the ladder, then more around 22 to 23
I'd love these to come back to magic i only got one of 2001 decks back then. Its great to play vs stanard and modern decks as a challenge.
Me and my friends used to actually be a competitive players we loved these for there proxys
I replicated the 2013 Yugo Sato plasma deck! Like with the actual cards though
It's funny because Shaymin isn't even that expensive anymore thanks to rotation anticipation.
I just checked ccgcastle and they have 1 world's Shaymin for $2.50
😁
Man it would be awesome if Wizards did this with MTG again! Why they stopped was a foolish move.
By the way, LOVE the channel!
In terms of creating a quality deck library and for casual players to have good decks to play with their friends I love the product. It's a great way to get the decks into people's hands without affecting the price of the singles.
Just bought 4 decks for 2022 and hope to learn from it as well.
To add onto the Prof's opinion, if you're looking to build a draft cube with newer cards and don't want to spend Shaymin EX prices, these otherwise competitively useless decks are a fantastic substitute. Just make sure you sleeve them up so that they're no different looking while drafting with your friends.
Hey WOTC needs to start doing these sort of decks again. Cube players would eat it up too.
If Magic the gathering were to reintroduce championship decks, it should be like Pokemon.
This is great! Love the MTG content, but I have to say Pokémon will always be #1 in my book. More Pokémon, please!
100% worth it.
You learn how to play the game in the way its played competitively and you learn how to develop strategy etc...
100% worth it to scam your friends
I'm actually a competitive player, i go to official events. I'm also not, unfortunately, one of those champions, but just an average player. I spend a lot of money for real cards to play on official touraments, but i think these are good products. Fun and really helpfull, as you said, even for players like me, who follow world championships, and whould like to play the official replica of our favourite champion. Unfortunalely they never print them here in Italy... we're such loosers talking about TCG events and products...
Same for Germany
How he opened that box is practically gore.. *shudders*
I bought the ducidueye one it's perfect! Thanks for the tips!
Didn't know the Professo was a fan of Pokemon and the PTCG.
I have a couple championship duskulls, the one that can evolve the turn it was played. Non-championships were £15 each (at the time), this one was £4 however. No brainer.
The year PUSA/TPCi adopted this product from MTG, WotC discontinued the product line haha. That was 2004.
My local store has World Championship Decks from 2006 and 2007. Have considered purchasing them, however they would only serve as a history lesson since the meta is vastly different today (and PTCG Online helps with that). I do wonder if they're worth anything, though, being as old as they are.
I still have mine from 2006, they are not insanely valuable as they were printed in pretty huge amounts but the formats were a lot of fun so grab some friends and play them!
so I see the world championship is taking place in Anaheim CA. when will this year's decks be ready for purchase?
I think buying the set of these would be great to have. Like the MTG Antholigies.
Wish I wouldve knew the cards aren't playable competitively before buying the Kyogre one
These are worth it to me I always buy these every year I don't play tournaments I play at home and it's the cheapest way to stock up on great supporter and other tech cards for unlimited play.
If you enjoy the format then while it is not worth it to buy one single deck it IS worth it to buy the complete set. The deck will likely only be used to play against the other 3 decks and that is what you are paying for. The chance to grind these matches out over and over. I am in the process of collecting all worlds decks for each years worlds and it has been a fantastic investment although some years are rather expensive.
Woah, Pokemon and Short Haired Prof? Are we back in 2016?
Prof, you mentioned Hex TCG. What are your thoughts on it? After coming from your Arena video, it got me thinking about how Arena could push it the limits of what being in a digital format could do the same way Hex has many cards that say "this card transforms into a random card (from the entire card database)."
Actually if you keep these sealed they will fluxiate by price really quickly
We need same for Magic! What an awesome Idea for casual players!
These should be graded A+ as it perfectly servea its purpose. I wish i have a way to purchase those. Knowledge is power.
I don't even like Pokemon tag and I still gave this a like and you should too.
I wish magic would do this again. I don't ever go to my local game store anymore and the two modern decks that I spent hundreds of dollars on have lost a lot of value with recent reprints. It'd be cool to have more high level decks I could just play casually with friends. I honestly don't even play magic anymore due to the price of a good modern/legacy deck.
