It wasn't that FNL wasn't good, but the reason why it was better as a mixtape was because of the many sample clearances they weren't gonna be able to get.
I truly believe that J Cole’s career needed The Sideline Story. He needed that freedom that came with the commercial success (220k first week sales is INSANE). As mentioned in the video, we woulda never got the Born Sinner we got without it. He NEEDED to learn the anatomy of a hit song. We would never have seen 2014 FHD, as he said, if he didn’t take those years to study and develop the so-called “superpowers” that allowed him to smack every song out the god damn park. Developing different facets of your skillset within your field is critical, and it’s one of the many lessons I’ve learned from exploring J Cole that I hope to embody in my future, and in my career/life. Y’all feelin’ me?
Cole had a Classic RUN Bro dropped: The Warm Up Truly yourz 1,2,3 Friday Night Lights Born sinner Revenge of the Dreamers Friday Night Lights!!!! Hope he can bring back that feeling on The Fall Off !
Amazing video man. This is exactly what I want to see as a J Cole fan. Your research is so deep. I love to see this kind of Cole lore being covered. You gotta share this around on the subreddits and shit, cause this video was 🔥🔥🔥
I'm SO tired of people discounting Cole's mixtapes EPs and the literal dozens of other songs he's released over the years FOR FREE when talking about incredible "discography". Drake too for that matter. They're either ignorant or blatantly ignoring it because it doesn't support their views. Cole could re-release those songs as 3 separate albums and it would blow up the internet. & Drake already did one.
Friday Night Lights is tied with Dark Fantasy as my favorite "album" of all time and while i was aware of his struggle to make it, getting a full deep dive does amplify a project I already adored.
Idk if it was a sample clearance issue or anything but i truly believe "You Got It ft. Wale" could've done real well on the radio in 09-10. Cole has other songs in hindsight that mightve done well give some of the hits we've heard after Cole's start, but i dont blame the label there. You Got It was the little party club song that was staring them right in the face.
That was a great year for music… my senior year of hs/freshman yr of college. Good times! We were spoiled.. I loved More About Nothing and my roommate loved Friday Night Lights and we would be blasting both in our room all year. I got introduced to weed by way of Wiz, whom the guy I was dating was in love with lol. I also got introduced to Section 80 that year from a homie that was from Cali and bought Kendrick (music) on campus. Of course Nicki and Drake were already deep into their runs… man d times!!
Finally someone Talkin about this classic Mixtape Songs such as. “Farewell, See World and Too Deep for the intro" are just so😖 and do not forget his feature on “Bonus: Looking for trouble" one of his *first great feature*
Living in the Carolinas back when cole was first coming out was a cool time. I was rooting hard for cole heavy. I first heard of him on star is born & beautiful bliss back in 09.
I remember the impact Drake’s So Far Gone Mixtape had and how many upcoming rappers changed their whole style and approach at that time once it dropped.
It’s insane they listened to Friday night lights and didn’t think release that as an album. Everyone in that room was bugging tf out
Same people who heard Jesus Walks and laughed
It wasn't that FNL wasn't good, but the reason why it was better as a mixtape was because of the many sample clearances they weren't gonna be able to get.
Hands down one of Cole’s greatest projects of all time💯
@@KoreanGingseng& it just feels like a mixtape

2:29 nah thats crazy telling a guy thats litterally blowing up at the same time as drake that he can be the “new drake” 😭
Drake cleared Cole by that time, he started in 2006.
U can tell Cole was lowkey pissed😭

Fr tho! Those “underground” tracks are the real classics!🔥
I’m telling you Man!!! Cole has so many hidden gems that aren’t on albums
This kinda research and backstory is what I need.
The Wam Up, FNL, 4YEO & TOS...Cole’s best albums
W takes I agree
2014 gotta be here. Over TOS.
You meant FHD not 4YEO
@@officialconch nah 4YEO is better than FHD. But FHD deserves to be there over TOs. IMO ofc.
Born Sinner was dope too

Can’t wait for the born sinner video, maybe you should do a video for all of his albums? That would be dope

Amazing compilation
Warm up > Friday night lights

Not mentioning spittas mixtape run is criminal when you put wiz in there
Living in the Carolinas back when cole was first coming out was a cool time. I was rooting hard for cole heavy. I first heard of him on star is born & beautiful bliss back in 09.
13:25 this is nasty work 😂. Fantano never said that
I remember the impact Drake’s So Far Gone Mixtape had and how many upcoming rappers changed their whole style and approach at that time once it dropped.
The world was goofy back then. They couldn't understand a sideline story or a section 80. But now...
Great work
Love the quality over quantity content brother 🙏🏼
as someone who owns a UA-cam channel with 200k+ i want you to know to keep grinding. you make some fire videos bro

My predicament is somewhat similar to Cole's, i got a lot of good classic songs but struggling to get a hit song
FNL should’ve been what it was. Classic mixtape. Would’ve flopped as an album. Cole is my top 5 oat btw
