  • I recorded videos almost every day whilst at university just to get things off my mind…
    I realized that I had quite a lot of clips and decided to put together a video showing some of the highlights of my first Year at Lancaster University and life as a Computer Science student.
    It’s nothing too personal, but hopefully it’s still interesting.
    Instagram (Videography): @andre.itai
    So… feel free watch.

    I'm going to be studying CS in September. I'm studying CS a level right now but I'm worried about the math.

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  5 років тому

      Sorry for the late reply, i actually don't get notifications on this video haha, but seriously trust me when i say don't worry about it; there's only one maths based module and that's in first year, during my time they offered extra workshop sessions for those that weren't too confident with the maths content on the course, i attended once because i wasn't that confident either having not studied A-Level maths, but i was fine after that and realized it wasn't that hard, honestly the maths isn't that bad coming from someone that got a B in GCSE maths haha. I did get a bit of help from some of my flatmates that studied maths in the first couple weeks, but once again, the maths isn't that bad and there's a ton of resources online, if you're coming to Lancaster then feel free to send me a message, i'll be back to do my final year this October so i wouldn't mind helping out if you reached out, good luck with whatever uni you choose!

    Hey, just came across your video. I'm actually interested in applying for this year. I was just wondering how diverse actually is lancaster? Only because I come from an extremely diverse area/bigger city, and I feel like it'd be a shock because I've heard it's not as diverse as it is a smaller place. I could be completely wrong though, thanks!

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  7 років тому +7

      BornToLoveVintage Thanks for the comment,
      Hmmmm, this is going to be a long answer, but here it goes...😅
      The uni and the city itself are predominantly white and honestly...it's immediately noticeable, you can have a diverse group of people around you, but from a personal perspective, it seems like it requires a somewhat more active effort and being open minded.
      I will say this though, I do think the university is quite diverse in terms of having a variety of different ethnic groups (though small in size) studying there and etc. however, unlike bigger and more urban cities/unis, I've noticed that people tend to stay exclusively within these ethnic groups and don't move outside of them unless it's work related; i'm not saying there aren't mixed groups of people, it's just that i haven't seen many (less than a handful tbh).
      On the bright side, it is possible to mix with different people, the best way i'd say is either by trying to make friends with people on your course (friendship that extends outside of the classroom) or joining societies (based on interests and not race) and consistently attending. I know it's easier to simply hang around with other people of a similar race, but i feel like people limit themselves and miss out on experiences by living that way.
      Also, i feel like the small city gives off more of a community vibe than unis in bigger cities do, i feel you should give the place a try as it's not that bad, people just need to be a bit more open minded to different cultures. It's definitely an interesting place and gives you a new perspective when coming from a big city environment.
      There's a couple videos of people talking about there experiences online, but if you want to know more then you can just send a message and i'll respond 👍🏾

    Will I fit in as a ldn black boy, and are there any black peng tings like ldn or midlands?

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  4 роки тому +1

      Kevin J I’ll give you a political answer 😂 yes, you can fit in, there’ll be other Londoners, but it’s a much smaller community when compared to the midlands, noticeably smaller. If you want to meet other black people then I’d suggest at least going to the ACS meet and greet and also going to hip hop nights out in town. You’ll just familiarise yourself with the other black people at the university and then decide what type of friends/experience you want from then, you can have non-black friends as well, flatmates, sports teams, your course, you can meet a ton of people, it all depends on what you want, you might have to put in the effort though, your university experience is what you make it in my opinion.
      As for the girls, you’re killing me here 😂 I’m sure you’ll see a couple that you like, but remember that the black population is small so in terms of expectations, take that into account, that’s my “political answer” 😂

      Thanks for the comment 💪🏾
      I’d say it depends on where you’re coming from and comparing it to, it definitely doesn’t have as many clubs as urban cities (London, Manchester, Birmingham and etc.), i’d say it has about 3 main clubs, but most people only go to 1 (Sugar).
      Personally, I only go out when there’s specific events going on instead of just going out each week. A lot of people (mainly first years) go out once or twice a week though, so numbers is never a problem if you’re going to the main club (Sugar) and if you go in a group then it should be calm.
      As for the music, it generally caters for the majority (doesn’t need to be explained) but, it has gotten better over time...If you like pop music and stuff like that then you’ll be fine tho 😅
      Overall, even though it’s my uni...the nightlife isn’t that great, it’s just one of those situations where you have to make the most out of what you have, good luck with whatever uni you choose tho 👍🏾

      Ayy, of course 💪🏾 i don't really go during the week though because i'm usually caught up with work, but i try to go to the movie nights and general end of term events. I went to the gaming society once during freshers week and saw a lot of CS and League which looks cool, but i hadn't really played much of those, LUMAS had smash bro's tournaments...i was sold 😂

    How do you find studying Comp Sci?

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  5 років тому

      Honestly, I wanted to study it for a really long time, but i did realize after starting the course that it wasn't entirely what i expected, although i still do enjoy it and kind of accept whatever the course throws at me; the balance between programming and theory's quite good and as for how it's taught, it's alright, getting hands-on with code and assignments seems to help me more than actual lectures, but it's all subjective. Not sure if that answers your question, but i hope it helps 👍🏾

    • @UA7123-

      Andre Obamwonyi How much programming knowledge did you have prior to the course? And did you take computer science for A-level?

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  5 років тому

      I didn't have any prior programming experience and i also didn't take the computer science a-level; the course requirements are a good 'go to' if you're worried about anything e.g. knowledge regarding maths, programming and etc. if it isn't a stated in the course requirements then it's safe to say that either a topic related to it won't come up, or you'll be taught the skills required to cover the topic once you enter university. Lastly, we're taught programming from the basics regardless of anyone in the class' skill level.

    how many black people are at Lancaster uni? don't wanna be the only black boy there next year

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  6 років тому +1

      f ade You won’t be the only black guy 😂 trust me I thought the same thing, but I won’t lie and say there’s a lot, there’s definitely a small amount and everyone seems to at least know ‘of’ each other (mixed feelings about that 🤷🏾‍♂️). If anything, I’d say your experience depends on what type of black person you are and hang around with e.g. International students, Essex lot, Londoners and etc. there’s a group for everyone, personally it took me ages to find people, but once you do it’s calm

    how long it takes to go from Lancaster to London?

    • @andre.itai7
      @andre.itai7  6 років тому +1

      Flor Mous depends on which part of London you’re heading to e.g I live in south so about 5 hours by car, but you can get a train from Lancaster to London Euston that takes about 2 and a half hours 🤷🏾‍♂️
