I'm 23 but many of these videos, while fascinating, are simultaneously hard to watch because they fill me with a sense of irretrievable loss and sadness for a kind of world that no longer exists. I know that every generation builds its memories and nostalgia from different things, but it is very painfully, obviously clear that people from those older generations built their nostalgia from a warmer, sweeter, and in many ways more wholesome world.

    • @CarletonTorpin

It’s ok to miss out on nostalgia; just pay attention to the things, today, that you might miss in 30 years.

Each generation has different experiences but I promise you will look back and be happy that you experienced what you have. That's really how each generation is. When I listened to my grandparents talk about their time in the 1920s it sounded wonderful but then with the 1930s came the depression and the 1940s was a World War. So I know it definitely wasn't easy nor was it all roses. Thank you for watching sergeipohkerova7211!

All generations have their mistakes and their problems. The past was better in some ways, especially because there was more human contact. On the plus side, your generation has so much more access to information than my generation had. That would have seemed like Heaven to me back then.

I worked at McRaes depth store, and I made friends with the guy who worked at the piano store right next to my dept and he would take request from me all night. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so I was part of the mall culture. Fun fact - Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer originated at Montgomery Ward in the 1939. The mall I nearest to where I grew up had (one of) the first Hickory Farms stores. They moved their HQ to Chicago and are mainly an online store these days, but you can sometimes see a kiosk in a mall during the Christmas season. Speaking of Christmas, I loved going any mall during that time of year just to see the decorations. I always found it odd that Santa was always at the mall I happened to be visiting with my parents though. Guy got around I guess! You mentioned the arcades, which were always a great place to gather (I like to play Tempest and Frogger). Another popuoar ppace was Spencer's Gifts because they had all kinds of "different" things, some of which the parents didn't us like looking at! In HS and as an undergrad, my friends liked to go to one of the bookstores or the hobby shop to pick up a D&D module and then play it for hours. If it snowed, my one friend liked to do donuts on the parking lot before we went in. Those the days! Great episode Rhetty.

I grew up in Torrance, CA; just outside of Los Angeles. We had a mall there in the 70s called Old Towne Mall. All the shop facades were like buildings from the early 1900s. It had a small dark ride, a wax museum, of course an arcade and funky independent shops. The food court surrounded a gazebo where dixieland jazz bands would play. Loved going there. The big mall was Del Amo Mall where Jackie Brown was filmed. I was lucky enough to be there during filming. Kind of surreal to see Robert De Niro at my local mall.

I miss going to the mall, although I occasionally still get to go to Concord Mills mall. Most of the malls I remember are not ones I went to often, but we would go to them when visiting grandparents. One was Fayette Mall, in Lexington KY. It's still there and it's huge, but it's not the same as it used to be when I was a kid. It used to have so many fountains that my name for it was "Fountain Mall." I also remember having some therapy in Cincinnati, and the place I had it was close to Forest Fair Village and Tri-County mall both, and we would go to the mall between sessions. I remember Forest Fair's awesome movie theater, and a perpetual motion machine with billiard balls in it that I was mesmerized by. On that trip, we also stopped at Florence Mall in KY because they had a pet store with hand raised baby cockatiels. After my therapy sessions I would beg to stop there so I could go play with them. My main mall growing up was Lafayette Square mall in Indianapolis, but I don't remember as much about it as some of the others. Also, when I was at IU, I went to College Mall. It's still there, but a lot of the things I enjoyed about it are not.

In the 70’s-90’s the mall was the place to be. You could shop, eat and see a movie or just people watch. During the winter you could spend hours there and not have to go out in the cold. So sorry to see them slowly disappear. In some places in Ohio the mall’s closed down and strip mall’s are making a comeback. Back out in the cold again. 🥶

It was much nicer to be able to shop and browse through the stores inside the mall, park once, be inside for an afternoon of shopping or fun and since the mall set the hours, most stores (not all) were open for the customers' convenience. Definitely miss the holiday displays, the food court and now defunct big box stores.

I have always loved malls! Sadly, my local one is struggling terribly. I think it only has about a 50% occupancy rate right now, maybe even less!

Recently went to the mall in South St Louis County. It was a sad sight. Not the vibrant place it used to be and empty shops all around. I have long said that the internet is the bane of our existence. People just don't communicate face to face any more and THAT is sad.

$20 at the mall??heck, you couldn’t buy a shirt from your favorite band unless you had some change for tha tax!!! I never went to the mall with anything less than a few hundred dollars when I was in high school, this was early 2000s..a video game was $60 a pop for the new stuff..I liked hanging out with friends at the mall, buying video games mostly, and maybe a few shirts..back then I ordered clothing online cause that’s the only way to get the stuff I liked

Things started to change a lot in the mall scene during the 1990s. That is when a lot of things really went up but in the earlier part of the decade $20 would last awhile. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Yamaha38XCRacer!

It's because Malls back then had reasonable prices and you could buy things from shoes to appliances. Today's mall sell expensive odd things in very few niche categories. I did not go to the mall next to me in years.

The malls that I grew up with have, for some reason, been transformed. Two of them were torn down and car-oriented strip malls were put up in their place. No, not really "strip malls". That implies one long, uninterrupted row of shops that you could walk to. Instead, both sites had little segments of externally-accessed shops placed here, there and everywhere. With chunks of parking lots and roads connecting them. Making it inconvenient to walk between segments, as you have to dodge traffic (and walk around in the cold), and making it annoying to get in your car and drive 30 seconds to the next segment of shops.
No idea why the developers think that's better.
    🤷‍♂

There are a lot of them that have closed out and many more are pretty empty. At one time there were a ton of them. Thank you for watching Lemuel928!

Back in the mid to late 80's, I used to live in Southern California so Pasadena Mall and Santa Anita Mall were my go-to's. They're both still around but with none of those great vibes.

Didn’t want to be a thief because back then that person did a major walk of shame through the mall cuffed up on their way to jail and loaded up in a cop car at the main entrance.

I’m sorry to inform you but I don’t love malls but you can have your share of them and mine too. 😁😬 There is a mall near where I live but because of some violent crime there I’ll stay away from it.
