    Tauros is interesting because on the one hand he shows how what matters in competitive isn't *all* that matters in solo runs, but on the other he shows that some of it still matters a lot. Give basically anything else the slow level-up group and tackle until 21 and it'd do a lot worse than the second page.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  18 днів тому

      It’s a brutal start for such a good Pokémon and you never want to have to level pre-Brock on anything if you want competitive times but it did well all things considered.

    Prediction: Tauros is gonna do... okayish. It's in the slow levelup group and has nothing against Brock since it has only tackle and cannot dodge bides from Onix until level 28 (not that I think Tauros needs level 28).
    And because of the slow levelling group, the Jr. Blackout training will be hell. After that, it'll likely curbstomp the game with bodyslam, but that initial Brock split will be absolutely crippling.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987

      Pretty solid preliminary look. Even if this thing got Leer at lvl 1 with Tackle, you'd see a much improved run.

      Yea I had it wrote up a while. Back in January when I did a Scott stream I was under the impression we'd be doing Tauros so I had it all made up since then so that's why the actual background and the 'big fight transistion' has different backgrounds because this one kind of sucked and I got a much better 'normal prairie' bg to use since then.

    The Slow level up group and atrocious level-up moveset really hurt Tauros' time. Given that you normally only get Tauros in the Safari Zone, it's not surprising (although there's really no excuse for it, we all know how baffling some of the early gen level-up movesets were) there's such a big gap between its first and second move.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  12 днів тому +1

      Yea, its interesting to see how it plays out but there's strange bias to it all. Some pokemon need to wait 20-30 levels to even get a move, others just start with Pyschic despite there being no way to even get that Pokemon lower than 70.

    Tauros is one these Pokémon that sounds good on paper ,but it needs to face a lot problems in a run. While being a strong normal type with a more than decent special,it has no moves for Brock and the slow growth rate,and level up learnset is not that great, especially not for the early game.😊 But surprisingly enough it had some great luck ,having no resets in this run, which is always nice to have.
    Managing experience while trying to do that as fast as possible is always like a work of art. Keep it up!😊

      Nice. I've already replied to your other comments because this is my 'comment reply hour' but glad you found it! It's sad Scott doesn't promote his race videos more lol. I won his Smeargle race and should have won the Parasect one and it sucks to stay under the radar!

    • @PraefMace
      @PraefMace 12 днів тому +1

      @@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeah, I did watch those races and the insane effort it takes to get those done is enough of a reason to mention them more often. I suppose the Porygon one got mentioned again recently, but still, it is a good opportunity to check other folks content too.
      And yeah, I do remember the Parasect one coming down to RNG luck, with the worst case scenario leading to a reset.
      Either way, here is hoping YT fixes its stupid algorithm and suggests your videos to more people. Even with me mostly watching Pokémon content, it keeps suggesting me garbage that has nothing to do with the things I am interested on.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987

    ~7:26 -- was wondering out loud of the run would be faster to this point if skipping Brock were permitted (cheating/extreme gliches, etc...), but then remembered that lack of an answer to Rival 2 would STILL probably require all that extra grinding even if you could walk arround "Brock's looking for challangers" kid (you can via abuse of expanded inventory, or flag twiddling via GameHook or the like)

    So now im curious how would a gen 7 Tauros perfrom. You get horn attack at lvl 8 and at lvl 29 you get the setup move workup to increase special and attack by 1 stage. Though you could do gen 8 or higher and get workup at lvl 5 but horn attack at lvl 20 will be too late since tm body slam is pretty much at the same time.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  12 днів тому

      Yea even the gen 3 set lets you get Horn Attack early but I'm not sure how they'd do. Its special isn't the best so the water one might struggle a little. Fighting and Fire are also notoriously weaker typings so I wouldn't expect much. Better than vanilla Tauros? For sure. Better than most of the other cross gen runs? Unlikely.

      I think I avoided maybe 1 reset but I wouldn't say much luck was involved.

    Didn't finish the video yet, but I wanted to mention a possible speed up before I forget.
    I forget if I told you or not, I definitely told Scott recently. An idea to do infinite blackout grinding. This isn't needed for most pokemon, only the truly bad ones like Abra or Magikarp (which can't even beat the game). The idea for this video would be to do 2 blackouts normally with Tauros. Then for the third, grind in the forest until Tackle is depleted. Stuggle train until your HP is very low ((Diglet's HP divided by 2) + a few) then go to Brock's gym. Defeat the Diglet and then kill the Sandshrew. The idea is to be knocked out by recoil when the Sandshrew dies so you lose the battle and Lightyears guy is still there.
    For Tauros I'm not sure how much struggle training you had to do, you'd probably only need to do this once. But that's an extra Diglet's worth of experience. Not much for this run, but if you ever do Abra, I'd imagine it saves a ton of time (infinite trainer Diglets). And for Abra, once you ran out of potions, you'd have to go to the Pokemon Center anyway to heal, so you might as well knock out a Diglet.

      Struggle recoil is a percent of damage dealt unlike later gens so I don't think it's infinite training, you'll still reach a point when you start to do too much damage even with struggle. Or maybe I misunderstood what you're saying

      @@ritwikism I've never done it personally, I just watch videos. I was under the impression that it was a 1/2 of the damage dealt, not a percentage. Well, regardless, you can still do a decent amount like this. But yeah, you were understanding correctly.

      I suppose some runs could try it. This run specifically was only in struggle strats for like 3 battles before it was ready for Brock so it wouldn’t benefit much. It would be hard to quantify exactly what it would take for it to break ahead and if you need a ton of levels, you’d need to really test the recoil damage vs the Diglett to be sure it’s quick or not risky because at a certain point, you will just win or it will be too tight to get the precise hp range to survive recoil on Diglett and have the Sandshrew win.
      It’s an interesting idea but my worries is that it’s too situational, has to be on a bad Pokémon, and the gains might be so marginal it’s not worth the micromanaging.
      Maybe for someone like Scott that can do 30 runs and get paid for it but for a dad just doing it during the extremely limited time I have, I’m not 100% sold.

    bro why'd you take the fallout shelter playlist down? That was the best

      The short answer is that it's a 9 year old game that stopped receiving significant updates 8 years ago and I just moved on with life. That's a long period of time, brother.
      But why keep leaving the same comment? I just can't fathom clicking on a Pokemon video to ask about some decade old videos that no longer exist.

      Cause the series was so good. I didn’t mean to keep playing it. I meant to ask why the videos aren’t up anymore. I didn’t know I left the same comment twice. My bad. By far my favorite best fallout shelter playthrough I’ve seen on yt
