Dude I saw them live in '88 what a life changing experience!
thats pretty damn cool man.
how old were you?
i still remember the bands i saw back in that time frame.
i plan to get the rest of this concert up very soon, so come on back
sorry for the long pause in videos just had to work some things out
WHAT an ensemble! Peter who? These guys are so tight. Chester and Phil in concert were mind bending. The crowds always cheer when Phil heads to his drum kit! so cool. THIS ROCKS!
Yes, two drummers is insane but it works so well in concert! YET King Crimson has THREE drummers and they are as tight as Phil and Chester playing crazy complicated music. Just saw them August 2 and they are as good as it gets.....oh, but not BETTER than Genesis. With the music and their light show it doesn't get any better than Genesis)
The opener for this concert was Mama.
Their July 14, 2007 concert When in Rome the attendance was estimated to be 500,000! Can you imagine!
WHAT!? Dude there are only 2 1/2 million people that live there, THATS INSANE! No I can't imagine. especially for a headliner concert. Not a festival. The Moscow '91' festival with Metallica was like 1.5 mil. and there were several bands there. thats mind blowing to me.
@@totallyradreactions5006 From What I understand, this was the last concert of that tour which they intended it to be their last
More info
Fern what I understand It was in Rome and as an appreciation for the support they had gotten from the Italians over the years, or was a free concert.
@@robbiem9293 Yeah, Italy was the first place where they were really embraced as a band. The passion for Genesis in Italy has always been high. Even today, you can see old Genesis songs being covered -- by women, if you can believe it!
I remember hearing that it was a free concert, which is why so many appeared. I don't think it was meant to be their last concert, although they probably knew that it might be. As Mike Rutherford is always saying, however: 'Never say never' -- much to the bemusement of Genesis fans.
@@RubesGoodBrainCoffee it was the last leg of the European section of their last tour. They played America afterwards and then called it a day. Until if course they got back together again for this tour that may or may not happen in the autumn. I'm not that optimistic about it. Phil is a shell of a man these days and no Chester puts a bit of a dampener on it. Plus backing singers... 🤔
Wembley was rocking that night, they sold out 3 nights at 72000 per night, 34 years ago but seems like yesterday.
4 nights not 3
@@stephencoxfishkeeper959 Think the 4th was technically not a 'sell out' but what the hell!
In case you are wondering what or who "abacab" is, it was the original structure of the the song: verse (a) - chorus (b) - verse (a) - bridge (c) - verse (a) - chorus (b). It didn't end up that way. if you go by the tempo, its more like a-a-c-c-a-b-b-a. They're like Pink Floyd, they like to change time signature, even if its only for three or four bars.
well isnt that interesting. I would have never got that
Abacab was on the Abacab album 👍 two before the invisible touch album
OK, thank you for that information. another album I will need to dive into for some reactions. Thank you for commenting it means so much to me. I'm loving getting to communicate with people like yourself who can school me on these bands and music I let pass me by years ago.
This was the second song they played. Opened with Mama
@@totallyradreactions5006 No problem! Happy Independence Day from a Brit.
yes, genesis sold out stadiums in the US. Other bands that could at that time were Rolling Stones, U2, Journey, Rush, and a few others
the stones & u2...yes that makes sense. forgot about those guys lol.
I went to every single night. Initially it was three days, but because of the sellouts they put on an extra night. They were at their peak. Phil’s voice was as good as it gets and anyone who doubted Mike as a guitar player (often criticised for not being as technically gifted as Steve Hackett) were silenced with this performance. After all he wrote this piece. Saw their third to last ever gig at the O2 in London and it’s sad when you recall Phil here.
i can only imagine how awesome that would have been to see those shows 4 times. you must have been wiped out by the end
Abacab was name of the album and mama is one of the songs from that album. Invisible Touch is a song and name of the next album, which features the Domino songs you reacted to. It also has Tonight, Tonight, Tonight which you need to do as well
tonight i am familiar with so i could do a live version for sure.
Mama wasn’t on abacab. Mama is from the record after abacab which is self titled. Invisible touch is the one after that. The run they went on from the record Duke through invisible touch is an amazing run of records. And that’s after they already had a great run with Peter Gabriel as the front man in the early 70s.
@@steelyd2 yes, my bad! Mama kicked off the Genesis album! This happens when you get old; things get mixed up!! 🤣
@@johndyslin798 I hear ya. I wasn’t trying to call you out on it I just wanted to cut down on his confusion. Abacab is one of my favorite records ever so when I read that I thought something wasn’t right.
@@steelyd2 no worries!! I appreciate the correction!! Abacab is a great album, save for Who Dunnit? Of course! Dodo/Lurker, Me and Sarah Jane and Keep It Dark are three of my favorite Genesis songs among many
The Invisible Touch tour was their biggest. That was their most successful album. They did their U.S. tour in two phases. The first part was arenas (probably 20-40,000 per venue). Then, due to demand and the success of the album, they added stadiums. So, for Los Angeles dates, I saw them at the Forum, where they played five shows in October 1986, and then saw them at Dodger Stadium for another show in May 1987. They also played two shows each at Giants Stadium in New Jersey and Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
Oh Wow nice, so they were selling out stadiums in the states too. thanks for answering my question and commenting. So cool you got to see them live. thats what it was all about for us kids in the 80's...seeing our favorite bands live. spending most of the summer in arenas.
Chester Thompson on drums.
In the US in 1987, they played arenas and stadiums for the Invisible Touch tour and for the 1992 We Can't Dance tour they mostly played stadiums. I was at both. I'm your age and the '87 tour was one of my first concerts. Phil left Genesis after the '92 tour and Ray Wilson sang on their last album in 1996 called Calling All Stations, but their tour was cut short due to lack of ticket sales in the US without Phil. In 2007 they had a reunion tour with Phil again.
very cool. my 1st rock show was Bon Jovi slippery when wet...right around the same year I think. Bro took me and I new right then and there I wanted to be a rock star LOL.
Thanks for all of these Genesis reactions! I've been a life-long Genesis fan -- well, going back to around 1983 to 1985 -- and I suppose I lucked out finding my favorite band so early on (for me).
I have a special request of you: Could you react to the Duke Suite from their 1980 concert? This was intended to be one long song when it was initially written, but they broke it up on the album because they had already done a side-long song in 1972 -- i.e., 'Supper's Ready.' In concert, however, they performed it as they had originally intended it.
Anyway, here's the link a an excellent-quality version of that -- from a concert in 1980 -- the 'Duke Suite.' ---> ua-cam.com/video/uNrnNuyqXqw/v-deo.html
Again, thanks!
You are very welcome. I am having so much fun discovering this bands library. I probably feel like you and most of the others on here back in the 80s when they were first hearing these songs, and or seeing them live.
I will work on this for you and have it up as soon as I can. There is always a chance I have heard the song before not recognizing the name like I did on abacab for example, but if that is the case I will follow through with the reaction because im almost certain i have not seen it live.
I think The Beatles were the first group to do a concert in a stadium in New-York.
If that is true, that would really make sense, or the stones...I just dont remember to many stadium shows back in the '80s' maybe Garth Brooks now that i think of it.
thank you for commenting
IMHO the best version of this song is from the live album Three sides live. A little bit more "oumpgh" (?)... Check it out! Doesn't have to be a reaction. And the album version from Three sides live is better than the filmed version of Three sides live!
Anyway, great reaction!
PS. 38 Special had some great tunes!
I tell ya what man, It would be hard to beat this. But I can only imagine how much stronger they got over the years playing this live. Yes 38 Special had some good jams...not familiar with their entire library though
@@totallyradreactions5006 Actually, Three sides live album came out 1981. It's not as fast as this version i feel (could be wrong) and it's an livealbum version which means the production is a bit better. Phil on drums sounds as good as it gets, he plays it flawless together with partner in crime, Chester Thompson. Mike's guitar is really sounding great and due to that he originally was the basist and didn't play lead guitar, (he also played usually 12 string guitar beside bass) he nails it! Feels as it's more... Rock!
I actually re-discovered 38 Special and played some tunes on Spotify just a couple weeks ago. Them and City Boy. Not really familiar either but some great tunes for sure!
@@nightHawk66 OH wow, ok so I will have to look into that album and find some songs new to me to react to. I didnt know that about Mike either. I need to dive into Mike and the mechanics and see what im missing. I know one or two of there hits for sure. Did he play bass or guitar with that band? I'll have to research that.
thank you for supporting (sub). means alot
