  • I shot this video several months ago, it is a Sony STR-D1090 I bought this as junk from eBay and made a repair video of it. Sorry for the not so great camera angles, I was still trying to get the lighting and angles right. The music played on the minidisc at the end is from Anders Enger Jensen check out his music at:

You are a brave man to just connect speakers without checking for DC across the speakers.

great vid Ben, you didn't go wrong with buying this receiver brother! i have 5-6 Sony's in my collection including the 1090 and a 2090 and few ES's as well and i love my 90's just as much if not more than the ES's because of the spectrum analyzer(which very few companies put on their receivers like this)and all the sound field button options, these are just great receivers all around and i also have always dug the digital delay Sony put in these too. if memory serves my correctly i thought these were around a good 7-800 bucks back in the day new if not a little more, of course back in the mid 80's i just getting out of high school and could never have afforded one of these bad-asses at the time. hell i had to wait until i got into my 40's to have the extra play money- i need another piece of gear like i need a hole in the head-lolol... always brings back great memories though, and i remember replacing an old board amp in an early to mid 80's pioneer receiver which was my very first proper receiver bought with summer yard work money i had saved up(do millennials know of this concept-lol?). i remember taking that receiver into a guy here in town that had a tv repair shop that also did some hi-fi gear work and for him to repair it woulda cost more than what i paid for the receiver new, so the only option was to order the amp and attempt to repair it myself which my limited technical skill, ended up i need to just take the old amp off the board and solder in the new one which it must have had around 20 solder point on each side -but i gott'er done and was happier than a pig in shit and was back to cranking out the Zeppelin, Rush and Hendrix!!!

Thanks for the comment 👍, I have a couple other older receivers like this one. I really like the late 70s and '90s equipment and some of the 80s they had really nice displays and lights not like anything they make today. I think a lot of the older equipment actually sounds a lot better also. I will have to make a video showing some of the other receivers that I have thanks again for the comment.

This model was sold in 1992-93. I bought mine in 1992. It now sits in the attic due to going into Protection mode one day when normally powering it on. I wish it was visually obvious what the issue was when I opened it up..... I can't see myself getting rid of it as it was my first real piece of A/V equipment. No, it wasn't the obvious speaker wire issue. My A/V noob days are long behind me. Maybe I'll pull it back out and see if it has the same issue as yours. Too bad there isn't a black&white answer as to how to fix one internally, when in Protection mode. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Every few years I look up this receiver with hopes of a cure.... This time your video popped up as a recent addition.

My brother from another mother !! I got one of these off a dump, and I cannot believe that it ended up being the same issue, the 5v transformer was de-soldered !! Thank you so much for this video Ben!

Thanks for the vid. I own a 1090 purchased new back in ‘93. Losing sound in one channel. Alternates between left and right. When I wiggle the balance switch seems to alter it. Could not find anyone who would look at it. Just ordered another one on EBay for parts. Expect in about a week. Never did any electronics repair, but see as an opportunity to learn something new. Any suggestions? Love the receiver, don’t want to scrap.

    Great Video!
Wondering if you have an insight on the same receiver Sony STR 1090 with a volume issue. Volume full blast, output about talking level, volume half way, cant hear it, so there is amplification but it sounds like its missing some stages .
    Thanks!

There are a few things that it could be. First thing might sound silly but check to make sure it is not set on mute, this receiver has a mute that lowers the volume by 20db it is a button right under the vol control. It is also possible that the speaker switch needs cleaning, with it on spin the speaker switch back and forth and see if it makes a difference. One other thing could be bad connections since this receiver has lots of dsp options there are many ribbon cables found in and out of the dsp board on the right of the receiver also on the bottom of the main board check for bad solder joints these are notorious for having bad connections on the main boards on the right hand side under the dsp and tuner boards. I hope this helps.

Thanks, I have a similar receiver, Sony STR DE-415 AM/FM Stereo Receiver, The right channel keeps dropping out. I push the main board and the sound is back on. Soldering problem? Any ideas?

I have this same model, mine powers on and everything works but the Dolby Surround sound, when you select that sound field, the back surround speakers don't work and the center channel works, but when you select the other sound fields, they work. Any ideas where to start?

These older stereos with the pro logic surround are kind of strange when it comes to the rear speakers, depending on the sound field mode it may turn on or off the rear channel which by the way is actually a single channel just using two speakers. The rear channel should work for pro logic surround but it seems that there was another mode on mine that would turn them off, I will have to look.

    What was wrong with it?

    • @TheRetroBen

The standby transformer connections on the circuit board were broken look at 3:12 in the video I was wiggling the transformer and you can see the connections on the back of the board moving.

@@TheRetroBen Amazing, so it was a relatively easy fix with no parts needed.

Yep, I was very surprised that's all it was. I like the Akai tape deck in your videos by the way.
