Now that age limit increase to 17 by the next Olympics become official, we felt it's time to revisit the entire doping scandal of the 15 years old Kamila Valieva during Beijing Olympics 2022 which prompted such historic decision for ISU. What happened then exactly? What was the fans, medias, and other skaters' reaction? What's on the line? Let's find out!

    • @kisimisi8243

and if she was 17 years old, what would that change? an adult could get into such a situation, but not every adult would survive such pressure ...
in Europe it was clean, and at the Olympics the test was found so late ...
I hope the ISU reforms are aimed at the benefit of the skaters, and not in order to harm Tutberidze or completely remove Russia. ah, this country has a tuktamysheva

The fans, media and other skater's reactions have no merit whatsoever here, the doping case has not completed yet and the B sample has not been tested. Kamila was a protected person but somehow the doping results were held until the end of the team competition, which was illegal and hers was the only result not returned on time? Also, someone purposely leaked it to the press for maximum negative effect on the skater and letting the media determine the guilt or innocence. So who benefitted from this media circus? The medals for the team competition could now be given to the US, Japan and Canada and the IOC went against the CAS ruling (which could not be overturned) and said that if Kamila places in the top three then there would not be any medal ceremony, one might ask then what is the purpose of the CAS if the IOC doesn't abide by the decision? Keep in mind that if she had placed in the top 3 it would have been a Russian sweep. In my opinion, this was political sabotage!

A very talented figure skater that always produced negative doping test results, INCLUDING FOR THE OLYMPICS, all of a sudden she and the whole team and coaches are attacked for "systemic" doping? That positive sample was kept secret, in an Olympic year, for over a month and produced just when Kamila helped her team win Gold. How do we know that that sample wasn't tampered with? In my opinion, this was sabotage to prevent Russia from taking the whole ladies podium and to deny the team gold medal but most importantly, this was the last year of the "doping" ban on Russia so of course a new one was needed.

She just might be a child prodigy, but she was still a child. Adults on both sides failed her repeatedly. I don't give a damn what her nationality is... she was a minor. She was also highly favored to win the individual gold. Politics? I don't have the answers. After the team medal ceremony was canceled and that being heaped on her back, Valieva was consigned to a no-win pressure cooker. If she wins her teammates don't see the medal podium... well within their grasp. If she fails... her dream is dead. Her free skate was a vague shadow of herself. She skated off the ice utterly spent and heartbroken. What ensued is hard to watch. The term "child abuse" doesn't strike me as hyperbole. It strikes me as disgraceful. 15 years old. Shame on everyone involved in this debacle. The Olympics is broken... and a dark cloud is hanging over it.

I felt very disappointed about recent figure skating rule changes passed by ISU! I wonder 1) Could ISU consider to create a separate competition for jumping and keep the traditional figure skating - which is balance between artistic and technical elements? The new competition may name ice jumping or ice gymnastic. 2) Could ISU penalize pre-rotation? It's no point to reward whole bunch of non-qualified quads! What it should do is: reward "real"/qualified quads! Same, call for non-proper usage of blade/top pick. 3) Could ISU get retired figure skater to be the judges - a lot criticism has results from inadequate technical knowledge of the judges.

    • @mariaritapieraccini3501

Could they just stop playing politics altogether, they keep changing the rules when they can't beat the Russians, same thing happened back with the "scandal" in Canada with the ice dancing. It is because of what happened in Canada that we now have this system chosen to be changed by the West. It doesn't matter how you change the rules because the Russians have great figure skaters, especially the ladies, and the only way to beat them is to eliminate them, that is what they are trying to do now.

For the first one I think is unnecessary. Artistic elements is very subjective. Judges themselves are very subjective. Is like everyone likes different kinds of food. But what the ISU can do is to hire judges with different taste of music…maybe. Or reward a bit more points on other elements other than jumps. For incorrect techniques, I feel like there’s solutions. Such as sacrificing the traditional real time scoring system and rather let judges take time to judge the skaters jumps. And also make sure judges are more objective on scoring the jump techniques(training of judges…whatever necessary to make sure judges is objective in scoring jumps). Anyway, not sure what’s the situation is in ISU.

@@MeMeMeME-tj6il I agree with your points except, "[j]udges themselves are very subjective. Is like everyone likes different kinds of food," because what they are judging isn't their personal preference. They have a guideline and they should follow that guideline, not their personal taste although it may influence certain categories and therefore the score. You mentioned they should be objective about techniques, I also think it should apply to artistic points to some extent (because fully is not feasible) that they shouldn't look at it as how they liked it personally. For example, you may not personally prefer a book, but you may acknowledge its value in literature. They should give justification for their score and I totally agree giving them more time would be a great step

And who should be held responsible, a 15 years old skater who’s had to endure years and years of abuse, a victim of child exploitation, who had literally no control over her body because of her controlling coaches, or her controlling, abusive coaches who had destroyed numerous young girl's bodies for her own gain, and who will continue to do so if we don’t put a stop to it?

@@mikevlad13 I respect your opinion, but I'll will stand by mine. Kamila being a minor won’t change the fact that she had taken an illegal substance, and letting her continue skating is extremely unfair and disrespectful toward all skaters who skate and follow the same set of rules. If a Kamila is deemed incapable of understanding the ramifications of breaking the rules and, as a child, is too vulnerable to be appropriately penalized for it then surely the rules themselves have just admitted that protected persons are too young and vulnerable to compete in such brutal sports? Kamila had made a decision to enter an international competition, so there should be no excuse or exception made for her, just because of her age. To allow Kamila to continue competing just because she's a minor is asinine and utterly destroys the integrity of the Olympics.
Eteri's former student had spoken out numerous times about her abusive training method. Yulia Lipnitskaya, about her anorexia, caused by Eteri’s obsession with keeping her student at a fixed weight, and how for weeks, Eteri denied her food, basically starving Yulia, and only surviving on a strict diet of powdered nutrients. Evgenia Medvedeva, about how Eteri relies on pills that will block and slow down puberty to keep skaters in a certain body mode, about how now, even after she retired, Evgenia can’t even sit without being in pained, and how she can’t even turn left anymore. Alina Zagitova, about how Eteri pushes her body to the limit, and how Alina loses everything after her puberty is completed. Aliona Kostonaia, about just how abusive Eteri’s training regime is, how she skated on broken bones and screaming muscles, how Eteri motivates students by humiliating them, just how Eteri had destroyed her, inside and out. Even the unknown one, Shuboderova, recounted how one time, after a poor training practice, Eteri pulled her out of the rink and forced her to sit in the trash can, saying trash belongs in the trash.
Think what you want, but to treat gullible, young, and impressionable teenage girls as tools, as medal-winning machine isn't an action to be praised.

Note! According to an extract from ADAMS (an online system for collecting and storing athlete data), Kamila Valieva underwent multiple doping tests from August 24, 2019 to February 7, 2022. All samples were negative, in particular, from January 13 and February 7, 2022. And for some reason, the sample dated December 25, 2021, firstly, was detained due to the fake illness of the laboratory staff, secondly, they allegedly revealed the presence of three substances: carnitine, hypoxen (both are not prohibited) and the prohibited trimetazidine in the minimum dose, and thirdly, it was presented after the victory of Russia in the team competition and on the eve of hostilities in Ukraine. What is the conclusion? This muck got accidentally or on purpose! The hypocrisy of the IOC began in 1936 when it chose Germany to host the Olympic Games under Hitler's rule. And the venality of WADA, RUSADA and controlled laboratories can be judged by numerous scandals on doping tests, for example, Serena Williams, Madisyn Cox and many other athletes. Like how could they compete under OAR (Pyeongchang) and ROC (Beijing) in the team events while you know, having no country represented. They're allowed to compete as individual athletes but yet they they could compete in team events. This just doesn't compute lmao.
Latest news, the B sample has net yet tested (based on the new head of ISU) meaning Kamila's team haven't requested the test. The age isn't the issue. The doping is and intentionally doing so is. Kamila knew she was taking something that wasn't allowed. Her mother confirmed she was taking a heart medication and then Kamila admitted to taking other drugs, even though not banned, but which can also increase endurance. But the banned drug she took just happened to be her grandfather's? The other endurance drugs she knew about and willingly took, but this one banned drug shes clueless on and then throws her granfather under the bus??? That makes no sense and is illogical. She is literally and openly stating she takes drugs and thought she wouldn't get caught. Frankly the committe should have demanded documented proof of her heart condition from her doctors and had an independent cardiologist on site to test and review if it was true.
She had a positive test result in Russia before coming to the Olympics so this wasn't a shock. They (herself, her mother and the coaches) thought she would get away with it and try to appeal to the fact that was 15 years old.
However, 15 years old is not young or innocent, though. This isn't a child, but a teenager and teens are smart. She is at an age where she can understand what you are doing violates the rules. I knew that at my age when I competed in events.
She should not have been sent in the first place and not allowed to compete by the IOC once they knew about the drugs. It's not fair to other athletes irregardless of age that follow the rules. Plus it would have removed the negativity from the competition. At the least her mother should have been had the dignity to remove her own daughter from the competition to save them all the embarrassment and for the rest of the Russian team.
But no they didn't and she messed up her program because she was nervous and embarrassed from guilt and knew she messed up. If they were confident that she would be exonerated and this was a misunderstanding that would be cleared up, she wouldnt have been nervous and worried about the media and she would have skated perefectly. This is no different from Tonya Harding when flubbed her performance after the Nancy Kerrigan attack. Her ex husband and the body guard said Tonya knew about the plot to attack Kerrigan. The guilt and knowledge messed up her confidence and her performance. Not the media attention.

Of course it’s logical. Literally any athlete will take things that will help you as long as it’s not banned. You take care to make sure you are not taking things that are banned. Athletes for example can take sleep medication, or supplements to help them with their training. As long as it’s determined that it’s not going to give you a significant advantage, they are actually allowed. In Kamila’s case, of course everything she takes is under the discretion of her physician and coach.
And you know what makes absolutely no sense at all? 1. TMZ has not had literally a single study showing that it gives advantage to an athlete, which is why it was only banned in 2014. It eventually got on the list for “theoretical” reasons. Because WADA drug list is very conservative. If Russians wanted to cheat, why would they risk their team gold, and their entire country being permanently banned, over a drug that has not proven to be effective? If it’s such a huge scandal and RUSADA is also involved as everyone speculates, why TMZ? There are plenty of other drugs that are proven to give you a significant advantage with lower dosage. 2. Why give the drug to Kamila? If the whole point is to win medals, they should’ve given it to Sasha Trusova who had the most quads and certainly would need to have the most endurance. From practical point of view it just doesn’t make sense. 3. Russia is not short of female figure skaters, if they just wanted to win medals, why use it when their top 10 would sweep the podium anyways?
The whole makes absolutely no sense. The only conclusion if Russian team really is guilty is that they had a stroke or something and their IQ went down 50 points.
And also, she messed up because she felt guilt? People like you make me sick to be honest. How would you have felt any other wise? You suddenly got tested positive and you have no clue why, your team’s medal is on your shoulders, everyone is looking at you calling you a cheater. Would you have performed well? And don’t tell me oh you would never test positive. You should take a look just how many clean athletes have tested positive. Recently one of the most decorated Romanian tennis player got tested positive, she has no clue why and is currently fighting for her innocence. Why do we not hear something about that in western media I wonder? The overly conservative drug testing and requirements are harming athletes, not helping them. They just don’t care about collateral damage it’s done to clean athletes.
