Just a note on another dangerous factor in bird toys: some come with a carabener clip on top (the metal clip you push in to open and attach the toy to the cage) I had a bird figure out how to open the clip and it got stuck on the opening under his beak. It didn't break the skin so, other than terrifying himself, he was totally okay. Until it happened AGAIN this time he was able to both unscrew and open the clip and this time it went deep. After a couple stitches he was fine but he wouldn't touch any toy for years after that and it took me a long time of training to desensitize him to toys. Now he is great but I always remember never to keep those toys on clips. I just wanted to say something for other bird owners. I've never seen or heard of it happening to other birds but they're very smart creatures and now that I know it's possible for them to open those clips and literally hang themselves, I have to get the word out to other bird owners. Jamie I hope you see this it's just an FYI for everyone!! Thank you so much for everything you do!! Because of you my bird went from having lost more than 50% of his feathers from plucking to being almost completely covered and ready to fly within less than six months of my care💚 thank you thank you thank you!! Oh and my electus Hank says thank you too!!
Thanks for the condolences and replies guys! I'm glad I can help others avoid the same scary situation. Hank is doing amazing now though! I can't wait to schedule a consult so Jamie and Dave can meet him. He'll be one of their flight students one day
Yes there scary I like the d clips with the bit that screws over it but see dangers in those as well so found a plastic version.. I m trying to get for my Parrot store that has everything you could need for parrots and parrot ppl... Have a look at www.BigbieParrot.Com
I have a parrotlet and her favorite toy was a frayed cotton rope ring. She loved nestling into it and preening the tiny strings. One day my dad and sister yell to me that she was stuck so I ran into the room to find that her neck was wrapped up in the rope and she was screeching, trying to get out. I barely managed to cut her out in time and I made sure the toy went straight into the trash after that (after making sure she was ok). If they weren’t in the room when that happened she would have suffocated to death which is honestly the scariest thing to think about.
Oh yes, i learned that lesson also, happened to my conure, never again will i get that type of toy! So both you and i got lucky to be right there to help our birds!😱♥️I almost lost him, had I would have not been home, it wasn't easy untangling and carefully cutting him free from this close call!👍
Yes, Jinx is my favorite, although i love all of there birds, My conure ,Jake, has a very similar personality like Jinx, course he's smaller than Jinx!!🤣🤣♥️
I never realized how much of a good deal your toy bundles were! 3 toys for just over $20! A lot of times one toy is $20 by itself! Once I get my bird I will definitely be getting toys through you!
Why are bird feet so cute 😭 I always thought it was adorable how my bird would sleep in his fabric hunt or rub his face all over different fabrics until I saw that picture of a bird opened up and filled with fibers. No more fabric huts for him
Wow I I'm gonna be super informed by the time I get one thanks to watching your channel the last year and a half. Thanks for caring so much for these little creatures from God and informing others
What species are you going to get? I have a green cheek conure, he is easily trained, loves playing, got him when he was 3 months old, he is pinapple color, and not very loud at all, he talks alot, maybe choose a green cheek, he will be 2 years old in September!🎉♥️whatever you choose sounds like you did your research! Let me know what species you get!♥️
Only bell I would suggest is stainless steel cylindrical bell. Petsmart actually has a one that my love bird loved to ring even thought it was as big as he was. I think it would be ok up to a macaw sized maybe. but totally like a amazon or a grey. Its like a chime. its pleasant to hear too.
I think color matters to my scarlet. She's scared of natural colored toys, but gets super excited about brightly dyed toys. When she was on fruity pellets, she would not eat the orange ones and the purple were her favorite.
Jamie, absolutely love the busy box, (great idea)! All the detail into the asking of your toys is impressive. Jinx is such a scene grabber, Always nice to see you two together. Product looks great and most important safe. All the best!
Heavy metal toxicity can be caused by metal toys. Leaf and zinc are generally the metals that cause toxicity. Be sure that all the metal chains or skewers that are holding up your toys are either stainless steel or nickel plated. Chrome plated is also sometimes safe. Anything galvanized is unsafe. Aluminum is safe.
I’m buying a rescue bird from ronies super soon! The way they do things is so professional. I definitely recommend getting a bird from there. They do not run that business to profit money off of it, but to simply help birds find a home.
Thank you for doing this video. Foam is pretty common as a spacer in toys and they are super bad for birds. Birds chew them and ingest it causing impaction which has lead to many deaths.
My green-cheeked conure (Elleri) LOVES to make noise. So, I replace any bells on toys with super hard plastics that can clink together. Her beak can't break these, so I don't have to worry that she'll injure herself, but she still gets to have her clatter.
Love you!! And I know my uncle had a galah and he had treated pine timber as one of the toys, the bird chewed/shredded the wood daily, so I bought some of the toys I got for my pigeon ( some were to big/ my pigeon Scooter doesn’t play with many toys) and we ended up taking the galah to my bird vet and the bird was poisoned by the treated pine! BAD BAD BAD!!
Yes. Check things! I have worked with horses and years ago there were places selling "wood shavings"( these are used on the floors of their stalls) they were toxic as they were made with treated wood(!) (what??!) Many of exposed horses died from this. No joke. So yes check things out.
We completely understand! We do rescue and often larger birds are brought with toys or cage that is not safe for that bird!! And big bird cages can be expensive.
I don't even own a bird (YET! I'm in school studying to become an Ornithologist, so I'd find it a disgrace to me if I were to never get one. Soon hopefully!) but I still want to start buying some toys just to have stocked up and ready for when the day comes! My bird will have the best of the best from day one with me! Thank you for always being so amazing to everyone's birds!
it's sad that in Mexico very few bird owners even believe in giving their birds toys. I recently got a tiel and have realized NO ONE sells good bird toys here. Even if I ordered off of American websites, the shipping tends to be ridiculous. So now, I am trying to make my own toys for her! It's really helpful knowing how to make safe ones so thank you!!
Ingested rope can become impacted in the parrot’s craw/crop requiring surgery. I’ve heard several sad stories of conures, budgies, etc getting their foot entangled in a string & killing them selves trying to get loose. Very, very sad. My sun conure has multiple wood block toys but she ignores them for her kabob.
Oh Jamie Leigh, you and Jinxy couldn't Be more adorable together! Actually I think it's good for people to be reminded that tricks take time to train, but he did both of them a little, just not on command quite yet
What about mirrors / mirror toys? They are nothing but a mental torture device. Had a really hard time finding parrot safe toys myself. The stuff they sell in pet stores can be dangerous if not fatal to birds. They sell it in the bird isle, it is colorful, people think their birds need it. Seeing mirrors and happy huts in peoples parrot cages drives me up a wall. I found out about planetpleasures parrot toy website. Seems like your bird boxes have some interesting looking items in them that I don't see in their web store at all. Those pins are awesome. I will have to order the small box for my budgies / cockatiel on my next paycheck :D
There is actually this one kind of bell where the outside is long and thin, the clapper is far enough up that the bird can’t grab it. If there were any bells I were to recommend, I’d be those (I don’t know what they’re called). I heard people talking about them and how they’re just generally better for bird toys (obviously only use them if they don’t get hormonal from them)
I'm so glad you brought up bells! I had to take my cockatiel to the vet last year for metal poisoning caused by removing and swallowing the clapper of the bell. She made a full recovery but it was awful to see her in that state and since then I remove bells from all new toys.
Thank you for showing that frayed bird rope. My Moluccan was climbing on his swing when I noticed the top frayed and he was working on it. I am so glad you warned us I promptly replaced it with a new one. My bird was not that thrilled about the new one but a slice of apple and pear nicely distracted him. My bird enjoyed his mystery box and is working on it now thanks.
I like so much to do homemade toys, recicling materials, speccially boxes, natural wood, plastics, we have in our house. Generally is so spensive to buy must of toys in the market. Jinx is so fun. He like singing
Make some puzzles for your birds to work on. I assume parrots have similar or greater intelligence as cockatoos. Such that wooden dowels can be used as obstacles they can interact with, allowing the parrot to disassemble some sort of locking mechanism (one example is the dowels block a door that the bird has to pull each one before opening the door and accessing the food)
I bought a set of toys on amazon to add to the birds play stand. I could not believe what arrived. I sent it back and write a scathing review. Painted wood beads that were cracked, zinc chains and hooks, cotton rope chew toy and more. There was death and crop impaction all over the toy package.
Info on safe ways to attach toys to the cage will be helpful. There are universal no-nos like spring-loaded metal links but almost anything can be dangerous for a particular bird. Mine got her beak stuck on a plastic C link and panicked, luckily with no permanent consequences. And I thought I was smart to cover the opening with a plastic straw piece that fitted snugly.
I am finally getting birds I love birds watch a lot of your videos and they have actually helped a lot with the type of birds I am getting. I have always wanted a budgie but I still live with my parents and they say no. My mom loves birds but livestock not parrots doves or pigeons. She has had chickens most of her life and she has decided that we are finally ready to get chickens I am so excited we are getting 12 hens and 1 or 2 roosters 🐓. Thank you so much bird tricks. You even help with livestock bird care too even if you don’t realize it.😁
My family had a budgie 20 yrs ago and he had a Christmas bell that he fed and got hormonal with. If you wanted him to come back to his cage you ring the bell. He was very protective and kinda viscious.
my tiel has plastic beads on his toys that he can play with, move around etc, he can't break it at all. he also has 1 bell because he loves them. he chirps into it then sticks his head under it like a hat then repeat. again he is too small to destroy it. there is more you can kinda get away with smaller birds. I cover him, but he doesn't touch it and even if he did he can't/won't chew threw it. he only ever really chews on paper.
I make my own toys as my birds hate anything I buy. I have conures, a Quaker and a Moustache Parakeet, so paper, cardboard and wood toys. I bought some hardwood someone had cut down from their lot, so no pesticides, and it’s in my hot car drying. I will bandsaw them into toys, and I use balsa houses from the dollar store as a bed for the bigger birds and they live it. My Quaker has rounded some edges, but that’s ok with me as it’s only a buck to replace. I use plastic beads to cover the wire on some swings. My birds ignore them. I use pony beads to stop toys from falling off the zip tie or string. I also drilled holes in poker chips. They like using them as tools or just tossing. I use bamboo when I can find it and may grow some in a container as it’s a very invasive plant. I have cardboard and paper that I make toys with and as I am quite good at origami, I make paper boxes and water bombs that I stuff with shredded paper and paper wrapped treats. I use paper cups(unwaxed) and other stuff, usually in the baking aisle. I use stainless steel measuring spoons as noise makers. I used stainless mis en place bowls to make my bells and used 2 stainless spoons as the clappers. I only use jute and paper ropes or zip ties to hold my toys together. My birds ignore the zip ties and the beads too but love to find the paper rope at the bottom of a toy so they can chew off the knot so everything falls to the bottom of the cage You can almost gear them laughing. I have baskets on the side of their cages so that what fell off can stay off the bottom. It’s also where I put their piece of cob corn. They love their baskets. They spend most of the day out of their cages but are in there if I have to go out.
You covered a lot of important tips. Here are a couple more: Toys made with wooden popsicle sticks should be avoided. When parrots chew them, the popsicle sticks can turn into long, sharp, needle-like pieces of wood that can cause injury. Not all stainless steel bowls are safe. Some contain toxic metals, therefore purchase high quality (usually a lot more expensive) stainless steel dishes for your birds and other pets. I discard the "stainless steel" dishes that come with the cage and purchase the dishes elsewhere to ensure safe stainless steel quality.
I love watching your videos. They always make me laugh. You guys are adorable and deserve your own TV show! I don't own a bird but it is great fun to learn about other animals and how they think. Now, though, whenever I watch other people's bird videos, I usually think they need to go watch your videos. I see all the things they are misinterpreting about their birds behavior or needs. usually think "they need to watch Birdtricks".
Great video and totally agree with you on all points! (I hate plastic toys too and think they are pointless!) I wish it was a little easier to get your toy boxes in the UK a I know my birds would love them! I'm thinking of making some of my own toys and I know you said to only use veggie dyes - is there a reason why you wouldn't recommend human grade food colouring ? :) Thanks in advance!
You got the one little note 🎶 lol so darn cute 💕 Ok, what about kids toys ? I see so many videos where the have kids tiny toys. I’m always afraid of choking on a small piece but what do I know 🙈
I agree with everything but the bells- this night just be my budgie but he loves them! He sticks his face into them and just sings. He doesn't try to chew on them or anything he just sings into them and bangs them against the cage. Again though that may just be my budgie.
I ordered the chunky box and the foraging box as well as the organic food mix. I’m excited. I know my greys will go chew crazy with them. Thank you for all your videos. ❤️🙏👍🏼
Thanks for sharing these helpful informations! Unfortunately other rope material than cotton is problematic too. F.e. coconut shells or (we call it in Germany) sisal. My grey injested particles while chewing on it, and threw up slime again and again after that. So I went back to use thin short cotton ropes to fix wood with it, and change it frequently. I use bigger ropes for clinbing in my living room that the can only use when I am with them. Best to destroy is wood from fresh cut apple-, cherry- or haselnut-trees. And yes, they love to destroy cardboard. But I am hesitant to give it to them because of the glue...
Im excited i think i will order your bird box and i bet Pikachu, Mimikyu, & the flock will love them! Im trying to find Mimi toys she will like as she is a brand mew rescue and where she came from was so bad there was no toys or perches for her so now i noticed she doesn't really have any interest in the toys ive gotten her so far. Although she has beem watching Pikachu play with his toys and she seems to be interested then i saw her moving the wood block toy around with her beak oh so gentle so there is hope! What toys do you think a female cockatiel would enjoy best? Any suggestions are appreciated 🌟🖤 thanks!!
Not just generally but learn the behaviours of your bird with toys. My cockatiel had natural big wooden loops not too dissimilar to the one in the video but smaller- it wasn't something he could get his head stuck in because it was wide enough for him to have space around his head. despite this, one time he slipped while playing with it and got it around his head and in a panic flew forward and it was caught on his neck. luckily i was there but it was hard to get him and move him away from it because he was so distressed and flapping which could've lead to any amount of injury so personally because of his habit of diving in head first i avoid toys that can be climbed into (head-wise)
Jinxy is such a cutie! 🥰 Where i live there is no comercial safe toys, so after almost a year of research and reading i'm starting my own line of toys for parrots 💖🐦 this video was super helpful, it would be awesome if you guys could make another one listing all the things and materials that are safe to use. Also, if anyone reads this and have info or links that could help me, i'll be glad to read them 😊 thanks!
I'd like to add metal containing zinc, as many bird toy chains have. It's toxic for parrots. But I give mine small cups and spoons etc (without sharp edges) made of stainless steel.
My budgie died from getting tangled in a rope toy she wasn't strangled but we think she had a heart attack. I comment this on every bird video to spread the word.
I don’t have a current toy subscription (other issues, nothing to do with the product), but I was very happy when I did. My fella loves shredding, and he got plenty to chew on. 😊❤️ For those who don’t have a subscription, definitely try it. You won’t be disappointed! 👍🏼😊
Oh, wish I saw this before I ordered new leather thong from Amazon. Rascal is the first bird we have had that chews (I attribute this to the BirdTricks Diet and our attempt at target training diet, much less messy by the way). We got rid of rope fuzzys, fabric toys, due to probably the same video. Now my little pin thief does help me sewing, I am very careful they are not allowed to chew on fabric or pattern paper. Here is a cockatiel game, he takes my pin cushion and takes out all the pins and throws them around. Also, here is a hint, we wash our dyed toys, veggie dye will rinse off. We do use plastic pony beads, he loves to chew apart the leather thong, and throw the beads at us! Hey, here is a good question, is it safe to use rustoleum on my outdoor cage? It is getting a little rusty and I know I don't want my cockatiel chewing on it. Much love Maren, Gabriel, and Rascal
I wish the store was expanded to other countries, because shipping costs soooooo much! :c and i know i can truct the toys but the shipping is way too expensive bc I live in Portugal. :C
Yeah, shipping is crazy - especially nowadays - but you can contact us for a custom box 📦 so you’re getting more toys at once and we can specifically pick ones that won’t weigh a ton for shipping charges 💚 info@birdtricks.com
No toys or huts that are sewn with thread. We had a Conure that chewed up a hut and got the thread wrapped around his leg and toes, I had to cut it off of him and get him to the Vet.
It really is nearly impossible to find good toys without ordering online or paying extra for handmade, which is fine but not in my budget unfortunately. I also like touching and inspecting toys for myself because my birds are tiny and can easily get hurt or killed. I've started collecting bits to put together DIY toys with unbleached coffee filters, cardboard tubes, untreated wooden beads and blocks, crinkle paper, etc.
I'm looking forward to receiving my first mystery box of large parrot toys that is arriving today! I recently bought a few toys from chewy and really only one of them falls in line with your recommendations for safe toys.
Hi, I have a Timneh African Grey. I have had him for approx 16 years. He has never been interested in: - natural toys - fruit/veg/pulses/salads - puzzle solving toys I have managed to get him off a seed diet and moved him to Harrisons lifetime coarse. He will now eat a small amount of warm peas, carrots and sweetcorn. But nothing else. I have tried and tried to persevere but hit a blocker. I also add supplements to his diet as he won't eat fruit/veg. I have tried numerous different natural toys, plastic toys, puzzle solving toys. I spent so much money and he didn't like any of it. The only things he loves is cardboard, egg boxes and more recently EVA foam which he loves to shred. These toys seem to have really stopped him from plucking. I have never witnessed him ingesting any of it. He had an xray 3 months ago. He has been twiddling/shredding egg boxes and cardboard for 5 years and the last few months the foam. The EVA foam sheets say non toxic and suitable for children. I have chewed them myself and they don't seem to have a taste. Am I being naive in that they are not causing my bird harm. I just want to do the right thing, but these un-natural toys seem to be the only thing he loves and stops him from plucking.
I make my own toys for my bird and it's so nice to see that I've done my research properly so I use only safe materials. It's such a joy when I see my bird absolutely destroying the toys that I give and it takes it to another level when I know I did them myself. I would really love to buy one of the mystery toy boxes but unfortunately shipping is an issue in my country. I love your informative videos and your whole flock ❤❤❤

What type if bird do you have?
It’s sad to think that not every bird owner will watch this and these tragic accidents will happen again.
Best thing you can do is share it with anyone who says the own a bird. 🙂
Good news is there are people like myself who don't even have a bird yet, but plan to someday and are learning all this good stuff ahead of time. :)

Jinx eyeing your shoulder at the start 😂
i like how she just spent 5 minutes at the end with Jinx going "babababaBAbabaaa"
And apparently neither Jinx nor I know what the correct reply is to that.
Just a note: It's impossible to look stupid to a parrot fanatic audience while doing anything to please your birds :P
Talk about being distracted. My cat yanked my headphones out while I was watching this. How can I be upset at his cute wittle face? Hi Jynx! Hi Sunny!
Just so you know, Jinx is spelled this way.

You can try a stainless steel nut and a stainless steel wire to hang your clapper those are all inert. Stainless steel is used in surgeries in humans
Omg the cute fluffy Jixy. Love him so much. He’s beautiful. I agree that that are so many things that people aren’t aware of that can harm our pets.
I’m so glad you have some awesome toys, thanks for this video!!
I've purchased several of the toy boxes. Both of my cockatiels love them.
“ Plastic is dangerous “
*goes to take it out of the birds cage at 4 am in the morning*
I am finally getting birds I love birds watch a lot of your videos and they have actually helped a lot with the type of birds I am getting. I have always wanted a budgie but I still live with my parents and they say no. My mom loves birds but livestock not parrots doves or pigeons. She has had chickens most of her life and she has decided that we are finally ready to get chickens I am so excited we are getting 12 hens and 1 or 2 roosters 🐓. Thank you so much bird tricks.
You even help with livestock bird care too even if you don’t realize it.😁
Always enjoy your videos. It was fun watching Jinx. He is a joy! Great safe parrot toy tips. 👍🦜
My family had a budgie 20 yrs ago and he had a Christmas bell that he fed and got hormonal with. If you wanted him to come back to his cage you ring the bell. He was very protective and kinda viscious.
You really do make it hard to choose a toy for my birds that I feel safe giving to them.
Perfect! I’m going to buy some new toys soon! 😌
My Sun Conure has a bell that's about 1.5". He rings it when he wants attention, especially if I start to leave when he still wants to play.
my tiel has plastic beads on his toys that he can play with, move around etc, he can't break it at all. he also has 1 bell because he loves them. he chirps into it then sticks his head under it like a hat then repeat. again he is too small to destroy it. there is more you can kinda get away with smaller birds. I cover him, but he doesn't touch it and even if he did he can't/won't chew threw it. he only ever really chews on paper.
This is the cutest video ever!!!!!!! OMG!! The busy boards are fantastic!
I really have to make some changes. Thank you for the information.
I guess Jinx was so curious who Jamie are talking with.
If you put a monitor besides camera, Jinx will figure out this is a filming.
Same reason why I don’t have a my bells in my birds cage or anything that they can see there reflection clearly on
I make my own toys as my birds hate anything I buy.
I brought some yesterday! I brought the seasonal feeding books, pellets, bread and all the freebies. Thank you ☺️
I love watching your videos.
You got the one little note 🎶 lol so darn cute 💕
Ok, what about kids toys ? I see so many videos where the have kids tiny toys. I’m always afraid of choking on a small piece but what do I know 🙈
Love how much you look after your birds
NO TOYS WITH FOAM. I HAVE Bamboo and make toys. I take the clacker out of the bells.
What a character Jinx is!
I don’t have a current toy subscription (other issues, nothing to do with the product), but I was very happy when I did. My fella loves shredding, and he got plenty to chew on. 😊❤️ For those who don’t have a subscription, definitely try it. You won’t be disappointed! 👍🏼😊
Your hair looks awesome today!
Yea for the natural feeding sistem is 100 USD to ship to romania 😔
Daria Dumitru the seasonal feeding can be purchased as a download and then you can have it printed yourself to save 💰
Yeah, shipping is crazy - especially nowadays - but you can contact us for a custom box 📦 so you’re getting more toys at once and we can specifically pick ones that won’t weigh a ton for shipping charges 💚 info@birdtricks.com
@@BirdTricks yea just realized 😅
@@BirdTricks That is great news and will definitely keep in mind when ordering to South Africa.
No toys or huts that are sewn with thread. We had a Conure that chewed up a hut and got the thread wrapped around his leg and toes, I had to cut it off of him and get him to the Vet.
I really love the way the people at for the love of birds are handling things with the virus.
I love how she had treats next to her knowing that they would fly to her
I had to keep rewinding this to hear what you were saying because I couldn't stop watching him
It really is nearly impossible to find good toys without ordering online or paying extra for handmade, which is fine but not in my budget unfortunately. I also like touching and inspecting toys for myself because my birds are tiny and can easily get hurt or killed. I've started collecting bits to put together DIY toys with unbleached coffee filters, cardboard tubes, untreated wooden beads and blocks, crinkle paper, etc.
I just got my pins! Morgan, Lefty and Comet so far. Beautiful quality and worth the wait!
FANTASTIC video with wonderful advice.
Loved it & love you 💕😘💕
I'm looking forward to receiving my first mystery box of large parrot toys that is arriving today! I recently bought a few toys from chewy and really only one of them falls in line with your recommendations for safe toys.
Jinx is so adorable and handsome! 💙
Hi, I have a Timneh African Grey. I have had him for approx 16 years. He has never been interested in:
- natural toys
- fruit/veg/pulses/salads
- puzzle solving toys
I have managed to get him off a seed diet and moved him to Harrisons lifetime coarse.
Jinx is so beautiful!! 🦜💙
I just bought some and it will arrive tommorow
IdanValenzuela nice!
You are first btw
@@chicken5761 ok
I love Jinx, he is the cutest macaw ever!!! He made me laught to much watching him bombing the scene, and looking for attention with his feet
I love me some Jinxi!! Seriously, he is just too much!! He needs to be in every video!!
When you train a bird to talk do you just say the word ahead of times until the bird gets it and you give a treat?
I got Comet. Anyone else got Comet too? Comet's such a cutie patootie.
Comet's going to be the first one I get. His foot fascination fascinates me!
