From a UK fan, Cal helped recuperate the brand but was a short term investment by the administration. He did well in the short term. What got old was the supreme talent and promise of teams year after year squandering their glory to lesser teams that had less talent, but with real X's and O's coaching (e.g., 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2017). Those years of underperforming were followed with the transfer and NIL changes that accelerated the exposure of his weaknesses in X's and O's. End of story, Mark Pope is the man. UK fans love and fully support Pope.

When he said that his real goal was getting these kids into the NBA , instead of winning at UK ...he was done. UK was about winning championships!
It was a matter of time. Over due actually.

I dont think NIL is really driving the change so much as the transfer portal is really getting out of hand. There's a reason teams have draft rights and assurances when they draft players. Unlimited free agency is terrible for middle-class teams and lower-class teams because why would players go anywhere where there isn't tons of money or a guarantee of winning when you can transfer to the next school if things didnt go well.

I mean the 90’s and 2000’s were the peak of the bagmen coming off of UNLV and The Fab Five as well as the 70’s-80’s where college football bagmen were outta control to set the bar high first hahaha.
Who knows how much KD got to go to Texas, Oden got to go to Ohio State to play with Mak11 as a hometown prodigy after missing LeBron, Rudy Gay got to go to UConn, or ZBo got to go to Michigan State outta Indiana when he wanted to go to Michigan initially but also idolized Glen Robinson who had just been paid a ton by bagmen to go to Purdue. Not to mention Melo to Syracuse when he should’ve been the #2 pick behind Yao comin outta Oak Hill Academy his SR year of HS where even tho LeBron stole the show, Melo led Oak Hill to the win with more efficient scoring.
      What a time.

When john Robic left cals staff his game preparation, fundamentals, and overall coaching ability hasn't been the same. He hasn't won at a high level without Robic, that's just fact. Cal isn't a great X and O coach, he just recruits elite talent, and throws them out there hopefully they win, but nowadays college basketball landscape has changed. His way will not work anymore, and less talented teams but older have been beating him. He was the best coach in the country from 2007-2019. And john Robic was a huge reason why, he will go 25-10 every year, with an occasional decent year. He is on the back end of his career and he should have just stepped down and became an ambassador for UK, and helped them hire another coach, but he is stubborn and when he isn't the big wig in the room he doesn't fair well. That is why him and mitch didn't work well together because he didn't get his way. Calipari will always he a legendary Kentucky basketball coach, but there is a new era upon us.

Other than Lexington insiders like Kyle Tucker & Matt Jones, who can give the insider dirt nitty gritty stuff that J Kyle alludes to. I think that's about as accurate a summary of Cal's downfall as you can get. One & done only really REALLY works if you can get a couple top-5 caliber players. Wall/Cousins, Davis/Kidd Gilchrist, KAT/DB, Fox/Monk/Bam. When Duke started really kicking Cal's ass in recruiting around 2014-15, he was settling for the 1&D's who were more of the late lottery types who are good freshmen but not physically dominant and a year or two away from full potential....Herro, Maxey, Keldon Johnson. PJ Washington, Cason Wallace, BJ Boston types. During his tenure at UK cal went something like 3-18 head to head against Duke in recruiting on the 5*'s.
And he nails Cal's self-sabotaging walling in or walling out the eyeballs over petty stuff. He used to speak with the local media regularly go on remotes with Matt Jones to hype up the partisans. He basically quit doing any media out side of post-game press conferences(which usually lasted 5 mins and he weaselled out of as many of those as possible). It was like the politician running for office who goes on CNN, FOX, MSNBC, Al Jaheria, etc, but when they win the election and make some tough decions and have an actual record to defend they on speak with the partisan station like Trump.
The Wisconsin lose broke him. He got elected to the BBHOF that year and had to do the press conference Sunday morning after that lost and you could see he was destroyed

Coach Cal did not care about KY or its fans, He cared about him and getting "his kids" drafted first. Thats not how it works.

    • @corwinspyre

You don't get top recruits if you aren't sending kids to the draft. No way to build up the program if that isn't one of your top goals

    • @ShawnD-tp3id

You may not "get" top recruits (with no experience), but you can DEVELOP top recruits over time who learn to play together as a team all while gaining experience and in game intelligence. You must be really young. UK teams of the past were like how I explained....those qualities kept us being the winningest program in college basketball history. Not Cal's one and done horseshit. It worked one year, and just barely, thank God for Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd Gilchrist, among others

  • @timmayes3866

Here are the variables why Cal and UK parted ways. First, Cal didn't have the talent he had in the first part of his tenure. Yes he always had top recruiting classes but the talent wasn't the same. Also he was only a few plays away from winning it all against Wisconsin in the final four and UCONN in the finals. He was running his own NIL which is insane. Cal didn't have the NIL funds other schools had. Also the practice facility request was a legitimate request but he went about it the wrong way talking down to the football program. Finally, the assistant coaches mix he had was a problem. Not having and X's and O's assistant like John Robic definitely was a big loss and Kenny Payne who was good at developing inside players. Yes Cal should shoulder a lot of the blame but Mitch Barnhart didn't help matters either.

He seemed more concerned w job security and as a NBA conduit than traditional college program success in my opinion---but let's face it, he played with the hand he was dealt and he has helped some of these guys who we're seeing now in the NBA become very successful. I just miss college basketball when it didn't feel like overt amateurism. When kids played for the front and not the back. I don't like NIL. I'm still not too softened on the transfer portal, I do wish it was at least two years of school or directly out of high school

    • @trevorglodowski4887
      @trevorglodowski4887 2 місяці тому

We're in the early stages of the NIL and transferring. NIL as a concept makes complete sense since the "amateur" basketball and football aspect left long ago and it's been the schools and conferences making money ever since so it's fair for the players to get a cut as they're the product... I agree though that the transfer process needs something changed. Coaches/schools have to recruit new players AND have to recruit their current players to stay. Maybe a rule where you can transfer after year 1 but have to wait until senior year to do it again?

Hasn't done squat....he beat Baylor and Kansas at home...with BYU. Cal couldn't beat Kansas at Phog with all our talent. Realistically, it should take a few seasons to build a team that plays like a team, but we still have the upper hand above most schools...nil$, huge resources, the support of serious donors, the whole program just got a mainline of adrenaline...I wished for Cal to be gone for 7 years. The guy never had any strategy, never knew how to win, never bothered to learn how to hire another coach to accept instruction from. His system was fun for 6 or 8 years, he did a lot for us, but it's over. Too many fans see through his garbage

The problem was Cal ego. He thought he was bigger than Kentucky basketball. He thought he was a God and was untouchable. Can’t keep bringing in all this talent and constantly loosing to mediocre teams and coaches. No matter what the excuse is. He created this system and he always complains about it. The game is changing and he failed to adapt. He won’t change for anyone. He will always be players first. And that’s fine. But still need to win reasonable games. Especially making 9M a year. No way you should lose to St Peters , Robert Morris , Evansville , UNCW , Oakland. No way.
