    I was once friends with a priest years ago, and he told me, "It's really just a job."

    My father attended a catholic high school and his religion teacher actually told the class that the bible was all bs. The next day he eloped to las vegas with a stripper. True story.

    This is very interesting. My own Brother-in-Law was a Church of England priest for all of his working life until he retired. Although he totally lost his faith very early on in his career, he dealt with it by changing his focus and treating it as a social care position.
    In his sermons. he deliberately played down the god aspect and concentrated on the morality and ethical side.
    The funny thing was that many members of his congregation thought he was a good vicar and really enjoyed his sermons.

    I have a good friend that is a pastor. I respect his faith, and mostly because he's not like most other pastors. He encourages doubt... sounds funny right? he encourages people to dig and question and doubt until they make up their own mind about it.

      Doubt is good. It can be healthy. It can motivate a person to branch out and improve their knowledge on the subject, any subject. Doubt within religion is no different. It can improve your faith.

    • @EthanReilly
      @EthanReilly 10 років тому +1

      Shenanirats I disagree. A synonym of faith is trust. If you doubt your trust in something, it's hard to trust the things you once thought was solid. The Unitarian church actively encourages doubt, which, although I agree with Unitarian philosophy, has led me to not follow that side of spirituality. I want a religion that encourages self-serve spirituality without doubt or mistrust.

    • @coreymagin
      @coreymagin 10 років тому +2

      Ethan you are a fool then. How could anyone possible read a bible and not doubt almost everything therein? If you didn't doubt the story of adam and eve the first time you heard it (or every time there after for that matter), then there is something fundamentally wrong with your critical thinking process. It's dangerous. Just look as Islam.

    Perhaps the best advice that I have for atheist priests is to focus less on preaching and focus more on leading their fellow community members to performing charitable actions. If you're pressured to be reliant on faith when you don't want to, then remember the old phrase "Idle hands are the devil's playground."

      You seem like a good person, i believe theres a God and Jesus came to earth. I was raised a Catholic and still attend mass twice a week, but the church is very corrupt, and the bible isnt meant to be taken literally at all and i think this is what most atheists dont understand. I wish you a good day and i always believed God would give a second chance in the afterlife for people who didnt believe in him but did good things and were good people. I guess we will see how it all works soon.

Your spin on things does not make you look any less stupid and childlike than anyone else who labels themselves religious. You are laughed at by the intelligent people of Earth. You haven't thought of something that no one else has, trust me. The most original thought you'll ever have will come AFTER you realize religion is BULLSHIT.

    The Atheist Voice I have been a wavering Catholic for a very long time, but very recently I decided that Atheism was the right, true path for me because that is what I really believe. My problem is that I was appointed godmother for my cousin's 4th baby a few months ago. All of my family is Catholic (and when I say all, I mean ALL), so what do I do? I don't want them to hate me, and I went to Catholic school for 10 years and Catholic mass for 19 years, so I know all of the answers that they want me to respond with for the child's questions. What do I do?? I really hope y'all make a video about this, please!

      Harsh part is, there is possible not much you can do. I live in an all christian family, and they have no idea I'm Agnostic, if you want to say Atheist, you can only say what they want you to here to the child. But hope that they do end up asking hard questions to which you have an excuse o saying the truth, if they call you out you could say, 'I didn't want to say 'because I said so' that'll just lead to some harsher questions.' XD But as the kid gets older you could talk to him about it, the window is from birth to about 14 or 13. That is when they are impressionable. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.

    I was a Benedictine Monk for 5 years (a level of Christian commitment few make) and so lost my home, profession, and left with nothing including no job skills (the demand for atheist theologians & Latin translators is pretty low ....). I know clergy of several denominations who realize the more you study the Bible, the less credible it is. It can be rough -- and with the Clergy Project and other support groups, it's becoming a challenge Churches are beginning to address -- with absolute terror (normally suppression & denial).

      People change their minds. Any anecdote about someone being a theist and moving towards atheism or an atheist moving in the opposite direction, or someone converting from any one religion to another, isn't really an argument. It doesn't support any one side. It's what it sounds like: an anecdote.

    In one denomination this is not a big problem. Some Unitarian Universalists believe in God, some don't, and that includes the clergy. That's where I go to church. But I'm also thinking now of a Jesuit priest who taught at the university I attended long ago and who lost his faith. And he kept his employment difficulties minimal! By the time he had left the Jesuit order and the priesthood, he had also become an atheist. But he had a tenured position and demanded that the university honor that and keep him employed. It worked. He married, had kids, and taught in that Catholic school until he either retired or died. I took a required theology course from him while he was still wearing a cassock, and he was a good teacher. Obviously, he had an open mind.

      Shit is a four letter word.

    I went through exactly this from age 6 to thirteen. My mom was very religious and my dad a non practicing Roman Catholic. My father although religious encouraged free thought and critical thinking. So when I told my dad at 11 I was wiccan he was OK my mom not so much. Then when I finally came out and told them I'm an atheist at 22, and that I never believed in God, because it wasn't rational. My dad was dumbfounded and my mother told me that I was a seeking soul and that I needed to get baptized and that she would pray for me. They are more accepting now then they once were, but we have a long way to go. I still haven't told the rest of my family and in-laws I'm afraid they might have a conniption fit or have a stroke if they were to find out. More then likely they would disown me.

      Your are a very rude person, with severe mental issues only a medical professional can diagnose. Especially because you are attacking me, when I said nothing derogatory towards you or anyone in the first place. Did an aunt or your mother ignore you when you were small? You have such anger towards a woman you don't even know. I feel sympathy for you, that you have to seek out a total stranger so that you can unleash such hatred. This is why so many dislike and abhore such people. I bet outside the internet your a very meek persona with severe anger that turns to rage when you meet someone of a different outlook then you have on religion. Your dogma is not being attacked. You need to grow up and leave your imaginary friend behind, and look at the amazing world around you. You have only one life to live make the most of it. There is no God, heaven, or hell. Life is amazing with out any gods. Live your life on the basis of treat others how you want to be treated. Be loving, kind, compassionate, and passionate. I don't rightly care what you believe as long as it's not shoved down my throat. Be aware that your imaginary friend is going to get you in a lot of trouble some day if you keep acting out on others like this though.

    • @starsfire_93

      Actually no I don't. Your "question" was not really a question at all, more of a statement of your ignorance and unwillingness to hear, let alone really read what anyone else has to say. Unless of course they agree with you. You are biased from the very start of your statement, thus you are still angry with me, because I gave you an answer you just don't like it. It is simple I'm an atheist, thus I don't believe in any gods including the abrahamic God of the Torah. It's nice that you"think" you have seen your God, but so many others feel the same. Just because many believe something to be true does not make it so.

    (I'm an atheist and I have great points against religion and a god existing etc. etc.) ever since my agnosticism about a month ago I have been discussing no God vs there is a god in my youth bible study. I have done well enough and even made most of the students (about 15 of them) have doubts and some are agnostics. Me and my youth leader have exchanged emails back and fourth and he has told me about which things he struggles with in the faith. We are having an official discussion about this issue some time in a couple of weeks and I think I am going to do very well because I am good at debating and I understand evolution, and why it is silly to believe in a god. My youth leader is a very good man and has a family, and he leads confirmation classes at the biggest church in my city. Would it be a bad thing for me to 'convert' him to atheism? I don't wanna ruin what he believes deeply and teaches to students about God helping you in tough times and all that he bases his lessons off of.

    3:57 _"It's hard to see why anyone would accuse them of not being Christian when they clearly were"_
    Well, there are on the Evangelical side some who say "if you really are a Christian, a saved person, you remain saved forever".
    Ergo, if someone "loses his salvation" he never had it to begin with.
    Someone reasoning honestly on this one would consider these guys seriously believed they were saved, but were deluded (which is what they believe themselves too, right).
    But this would of course leave them with the question: "if this guy thought so honestly he was saved and is now showing he was not, how can I be sure I was really saved", which is a very uncomfortable one, since being really saved to many of them involves being really sure of being really saved. I think that explains it.

    • @tuskinekinase
      @tuskinekinase 9 років тому

      WasteLandWarrior It's almost like how different dialects came to be. People are geographically separated, and different systems of verbal symbols arise independently into protolanguages. Then people migrates, and their ways of speaking change little bits after little bits (just look at how internet slangs arise), also independently. People living in the same communities strengthens each other's way of speaking and writing. Eventually these separated communities stabilize their changed way of speaking and writing into different languages.
      This is how some "different languages" actually look quite similar, such as French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, cause they all have their root in Latin; Chinese and Japanese have similar modalities and Chinese people can understand Japanese kanji a lot of the times; other languages looks vastly different, but you can always find languages similar to theirs in the same geographical regions.

    about the DOUBT u r talking from the christian point of view, but from a catholic point of view, doubt is not a bad thing, because the bible requires you to believe even if you don't see, they call it the dark night, the deserts of the soul, so, many priests and nuns force themselves to believe in god to so achieve sainthood to the heroic point. Just saying.

    "You'd think, if they're a good Christian church they'd support their pastor even if he's no longer a Christian." Why? A church is in the business of selling their brand of religion, and if a salesman can't sell he's useless to them. A pastor who no longer believes in God is like a cigarette salesman who no longer believes that smoking doesn't cause cancer and can no longer keep pretending .he still believes it doesn't.

    I didn't know priests can change from Christian to athiest. Wierd. I am totally fine with the change. One is free to follow whatever religion they want, and they can even choose a nonreligous view like athiest. As long as they are not hurting anybody, they are fine. I think that a priest should get another job first. Then they can come out of the closest and declare themselves athiest. It is difficult to get a job without proper skills. So I am glad there is help out there for former priests.

    THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE
    In 1925, an American astronomer by the name of Edwin Hubble, provided observational evidence that all galaxies are receding from one another, which implies that the universe is expanding. The expansion of the universe is now an established scientific fact. This is what Al-Qur’aan says regarding the nature of the universe:
    “And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. [Al-Qur’aan 51:47]
    The Arabic word mûsi‘ûn is correctly translated as ‘expanding it’, and it refers to the creation of the expanding vastness of the universe. Stephen Hawking, in his book, ‘A Brief History of Time’, says, “The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century.” The Qur’aan mentioned the expansion of the universe, before man even learnt to build a telescope! Some may say that the presence of astronomical facts in the Qur’aan is not surprising since the Arabs were advanced in the field of astronomy. They are correct in acknowledging the advancement of the Arabs in the field of astronomy. However they fail to realize that the Qur’aan was revealed centuries before the Arabs excelled in astronomy. Moreover many of the scientific facts mentioned above regarding astronomy, such as the origin of the universe with a Big Bang, were not known to the Arabs even at the peak of their scientific advancement. The scientific facts mentioned in the Qur’aan are therefore not due to the Arabs’ advancement in astronomy. Indeed, the reverse is true. The Arabs advanced in astronomy, because astronomy occupies a place in the Qur’aan.
    CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE: ‘THE BIG BANG’
    The creation of the universe is explained by astrophysicists in a widely accepted phenomenon, popularly known as the ‘Big Bang’. It is supported by observational and experimental data gathered by astronomers and astrophysicists for decades. According to the ‘Big Bang’, the whole universe was initially one big mass (Primary Nebula). Then there was a ‘Big Bang’ (Secondary Separation) which resulted in the formation of Galaxies. These then divided to form stars, planets, the sun, the moon, etc. The origin of the universe was unique and the probability of it occurring by ‘chance’ is zero. The Qur’aan contains the following verse, regarding the origin of the universe:
    “Do not the Unbelievers see That the heavens and the earth Were joined together (as one Unit of Creation), before We clove them asunder?” [Al-Qur’aan 21:30]
    The striking congruence between the Qur’aanic verse and the ‘Big Bang’ is inescapable! How could a book, which first appeared in the deserts of Arabia 1400 years ago, contain this profound scientific truth?

      Not quite. He and a committee published comparisons of modern biology with the Qur'an. That's not quite the same thing as writing a book of embryology based on the Qur'an.
      He didn't read the Qur'an and say, "wow, this is some revolutionary stuff here."
      Show me a novel discovery pulled from a holy book -before- independent research discovered it. Not post hoc reasoning why the holy book was right all along.
