  • After launching our boat for the 2020 season, I was eager to recommission the Westerbeke generator. This is the first start to make sure she was running good.

    For even more technical stuff, I also have a 'How I Did It' mechanical repairs and upgrades series from the projects I've done on both this boat, as well as our prior Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge. Check that Playlist out here: • Boating Basics - Stick...

    Glad you showed the exhaust outlet. When you started the generator, I almost screamed "turn the seacock"!

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  4 роки тому

      If you watch my winterizing video from last fall, you'll see that I always make sure the seacocks are left Open for the Spring. One less thing to think about - or four in our case 😉

      A little new here. Why turn the seacock?

    • @1320fastback
      @1320fastback Рік тому

      @@pederkimlunding3352The generator uses lake/ocean water for engine cooling and exhausts it through the exhaust. The seacock is just a valve that allows outside water to come into the boat to cool the motor.

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  Рік тому

      As @1320fastback mentioned, the built in generator on our boat(s) is/are water cooled by way of drawing seawater (from a lake or ocean) through the cooling system. That water comes in via a pipe that is connected to a through hull fitting and can be shut off/turned in via a seacock, which is just a fancy boating term for a ball valve.
      If you have a chance, take a look at the video I produced when I added an auxiliary muffler to the generator on our 330 Sundancer. At some point, I mention and show the seacock shutoff valve; ua-cam.com/video/muV5PyAKkbc/v-deo.html
      Those videos refer to our previous boat that we upgraded last season (2022) to a 370 Sundancer. Similar boat, just a bit bigger overall. Similar set-up with a built-in generator, only a little more powerful. Here's a video I did this Spring showing the startup procedure. Again, I go into a bit more detail regarding the seacock; ua-cam.com/video/XGbqAdZP4H0/v-deo.html

    As someone who had a boat with non-stop generator issues, nothing is more satisfying to me than a good running generator. My current boat has a Westerbeke and it has been fantastic so far (knock on wood)

      This one had been a bit of a challenge, as the prior owner(s?) neglected a few items, so I had my share of cut knuckles and spent money to get her back to the fine running condition she's now in. Check my channel for the water pump rebuild video. Spoiler alert, it's not wort rebuilding, just buy a new one ;-)

      Ya, had those on our old 300 Sundancer. . .
      While I got you, watched your latest Spyder cruise video but was disappointed by one thing: It was way too short :-0 Would have loved to see more from the spots you stopped at. Maybe next time . . .?
      And, I goy a question regarding the maps your shared in that one. What/where did those maps come from? I love the fact that you were able to share the route in an animated fashion. Would be a good addition to my cruising vids.

      Interesting. I assume you are referring to the footage from the helmet camera. I had probably 45 mins of raw footage and I kept paring it down to get the video to around 15 minutes. I though too much might get boring. I guess I should have left more in.
      Maps..... All my video editing work is done on an iMac. There is program called Keynote that is bundled with the OS. Keynote is the Apple equivalent of Power Point. I just grab an image of the area of the map (Google or Maps) I want, import it into a slide in Keynote, and then draw a line from the start and the finish point. You can then bend the line to conform to the road in as much detail as you want. After, I just format the line, and animate it at what ever speed I want. Then, you can export it as a movie to bring it into the video project. After a bit of practice I was able to knock off those maps in about 10 minutes. Well worth the time. I am sure Power Point would have a similar feature. The background images of the towns are just overlayed JPEG's and I play with the opacity to get the look I want.

    You might want to verify the generator output with a quality multimeter - if it is only 100VAC, that could cause issues with motors and other inductive loads (brownout condition). Why would there be a 10 V difference in the shore power readings unless there is some variability with the meters on the control panel.

    The capacitor is probably bad.
    That's why it's only putting out a 100 volts.
    Just went through this on my 4.5 new capacitor fixed the problem.

    I see you have v drives. Have you tried bigger trim tabs? Some have reported an increase in fuel economy with bigger tabs.

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  4 роки тому

      No, haven't. Not concerned about possibly 'saving' a couple of bucks on the fuel, as we only average about one mile per gallon as is, so it would have to be a considerable reduction in fuel to make the investment worth my while, but thanks for the tip. . .

      @@BoatingWithBoogaboo That's understandable. For me, another quarter mile per gallon would put Key West within range.

    My question is a little off-topic but with respect to spring cleaning I wanted to run environmentally safe cleaner into the holding tank and flush it out. I’ve only had it pumped out before but naturally that was the yucky stuff. There is a way to discharge the holding tank right there at the head but something (I think in the hatch) needs to be manually opened. I am not sure what to do. But I do know if you are way out to sea you can empty your holding tank. I wanted to do the same. Does anyone know what I need to do to get that head to flush the holding tank? Perhaps a quick cellphone video. Thanks!

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  4 роки тому

      I would never consider discharging the holding tank overboard. Apart from being illigal herein Canada, why would anyone pump raw sewage into any body of water?

    I have an 89 Sea Ray 340 who’s generator starts and runs great for 10 minutes then shuts down, under load or no load. Lots of water coming out the outlet. Any ideas? Help

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  4 роки тому

      No, I haven't experienced that on the generator. That said, we had a similar condition on the main motor on our old Sea Ray 240. After spending close to $3,000 with the marina to attempt to fix the issue, it was found to be a small piece of Styrofoam that found it's way into the fuel tank, which was hampering the fuel flow while at speed. That's when I decided to do my own mechanical repairs ;-)
