- Today I’m going to be experimenting and just letting loose on some rough textured paper, which is different from the cold press paper I usually use.
I did not use a reference photo for this piece, just grabbed some colours and thought about the atmosphere of the Scandinavian seas I saw in the show Vikings.
Focused on getting to grips with granulating colours on rough paper, and also using a dry brush technique on the texture, preserving the white of the page.
Materials used:
Rough watercolour sketchbook from Maruman,
Brushes, including a Hake brush (1 inch) and several round brushes
Two glasses with clean water
Colours:
- Titanium buff (Van Gogh)
- Light grey (Sennelier)
- Own aqua mix
- Prussian Blue (Sennelier)
- Phalo Turquoise (Sennelier)
- Helio Turquoise (Schmincke)
- Lunar Blue (Daniel Smith)
-
Time taken: approximately 45 minutes
Filming equipment:
Nikon d3100
Overhead tripod
Canon G9X
Flexi mini tripod

What is your favourite watercolour paper? Cold press? Hot press? Let me know!
Love the contrast between the storming sea and your calming voice!
Thank you so much!!
Really great video, super helpful.
Just loved the painting.😂😂😂😂
Beautiful painting, both sky and sea, but I especially liked the way you made the water come alive - mesmerising.
I'm starting loose painting and thinking of using rough paper. Thank you for the video - it definitely help in my making the choice. Yes to rough paper
I started using watercolors some months ago and recently I decided to buy a 60% cotton block (my first cotton experience 😂). I didn't pay attention and chose the rough textured one and since I tried it some days ago, I didn't touch it again. It's so hard to try to make not-blurry figures, but watching you now I'm thinking that maybe I should try to make something different from what I usually do.
Thank you for share!
Bought Arches Rough paper by mistake (was not acquainted with "rough", only aware of hot and cold press). Thanks for your informative video!
I just bought a rough paper and I was looking for inspiration. Amazing work =)
Ah this makes me so happy! Thank you! Rough paper has been an adjustment but it's got such beautiful texture!
You prefer hot pressed if you like smooth paper. Cold pressed is rough. Hot pressed is heated and compressed and this seals the texture of the cotton fibres to a smooth finish.
If she ever got into a fight:
"Now listen here, lovely! The lovely way you are speaking to me right now is about to get your lovely a** beat!"
Reviewing a bad Amazon product:
"Although I was expecting a lamp, this lovely clock is wonderful to play around with."
Hahaha weirdly accurate
Where can I buy a rough press tablet or book?
What tape are you using please?
