Owned a 2016 Scion FR-S, then a 2019 TRD 86 that was Supercharged on E85 making 350whp. I sold the 86 for a 21 Supra but just recently sold the Supra and picked up a 2023 GR86. The Supra was fast but honestly to me driving a slow car fast was a lot more fun than driving a fast car slow. I also missed the manual transmission so much. There is a reason why I've owned all 3 generations of the twins. I will probably get a manual Supra if I can get my hands on one.

Be yourself! I'm like you. I prefer a lighter car and one with versatility. It seems the new GR86 has a wider powerband and to be honest the engine sounds are more entertaining than the Supra. But a big engine car does fill you with adrenaline and that can be fun too. Those are fun just from the monster sound they make

I hate to say it, but driving my 84hp, 2021 Hyundai i10 in certain situations can be more fun than driving my 2020 3.0 Supra GR. Constantly hitting the gas on the i10 way early on a turn where as on the Supra, I'm just waiting or lightly tapping on pedal lol. I'm thinking on getting a Mazda RX5 RF, but I'm leaning more on a GR86

My last sentence states that I will get a manual Supra when I get the chance and I just got the chance yesterday. Fast cars are fun but it's short lived when you go past the speed limit way too quick during daily driving. It's fun to push the limits on the GR86.

Great review. Colin Chapman was right, lighter is better. It honestly looked like you were carrying more speed through the corners in the 86. The 86 is just great bang for your buck. I've actually gone the opposite way when buying tires, instead of going wider, I go a little narrower. You give up a little traction, and the handling limits aren't as high, but in my experience the car seems to communicate a little more clearly allowing you to explore the limits more easily, and at a lower speed. This may not be great for the track, but for the street it works for me. Enjoyed the video.

    • @revmatchtv

I'm pretty sure I was carrying more speed in the 86. With my new 295 tires, the suspension is not properly dialed in and the tires were rubbing the front fenders so I was taking it a bit easier.

For most driving the Supra will not allow you to push throttle all the way. He could only do that in straights. So he is taking it to track because regular roads won't allow that. So the lighter car can explore the limits more and you can push it further.

@@jamesmedina2062 Left my 15 STI and went back to a Supra (Made the mistake of buying a 2.0 first). STI is fun and has a raw feeling but when going to modify it gets expensive. Way more expensive then pulling power out of the Supra. Of course, the Supra has a higher price tag MSRP vs MSRP but it responds better to mods. The STI also just felt like a cheap drive when comparing interior as expected. The Supra is a bit more fun to throw around corners and mess around a bit on the highway but the STI just felt great to drive. Better steering feedback and of course the manual. The STI was a bit more practical if you live in an area that sees regular snow due to AWD and has four seats but if you dont regularly have many passengers then four seats is negligible. The trunk opening on the STI was small so getting large items in could be a pain. The Supra can fit a decent amount of items in the the rear hatch but less over all than the STi. You can't go wrong with either car in the end but I'd take my Supra over my old STI any day.

I'm so wanting to pull the trigger on a new Supra, but I'm worried that I'm going to pay that "double the price" and not even find the car as fun to drive. "Can get yourself into trouble" in the Supra also comes to mind. Can drive the crap out the Miata and not have to worry about it so much. If there’s a little gust of wind, it goes down hard. The APR products are very high quality imho and provide a LOT of downforce. I’d recommend the GTC 250 for the Supra because unless you get the front splitter too, the car will understeer quite a lot on track. If it’s just for looks, the GTC 300 I have fits the bill!

I thought this was gonna be a Supra 2.0 vs GR86 video...
Anyway, I disagree that the GR86 is enough and a huge improvement over the GT86. For this specific output and this car's weight, it needs an extra cylinder to be perfect. Car+driver wet weight (assuming 180-pound driver) should be equal to the CC displacement N/A for an entry-level sports car. Additionally, the engine architecture should be able to handle (with forged rods and lower-comp forged pistons) roughly doubling the N/A power, with an off-the-shelf forged crank, head stud upgrade, and braced block(if factory open deck) allowing support for triple the NA power.
The engine's stoke (really any modern engine's stroke length) should be fixed at either 90mm or 100mm depending on the torque to HP ratio desired. The max safe street RPM is about 8000 on the shorter of those two, and about 7200rpm proportionally (same piston speed), for the 100mm stroke.
So you could build and then push the 90mm stroke up to 9000rpm for a circuit RACING build, and the equivalent on that for piston speed of the 100mm stroke would be 8100rpm. Hence picking your poison between torque and HP/revs. But nowadays with modern head and cam design (and variable valvetrains), we can get engines to have a very balanced powerband and rev out to 8000, regardless, so. **shrug**

(Legit, just slap the tC roofline on anything and have similar rear leg, shoulder, and hip room and you have the perfect 2+2 car)
I'm pretty sure they can do that for around 42k as long as you're taking the turbo 4-cyl version and not a turbo 6-cyl version. Though TBH, a turbo 5-cyl and a N/A 8-cyl being the two main options, perhaps with a turbo 3-cyl hybrid as the base model would be pretty sick. Also, mandatory double wishbone, SLA, or true multilink front suspension. I ain't buggin' with any Macpherson BS.

      1) 2013 93k km GT86 for 17k
      2) 2013 110k km GT86 for 21k, but it has completely new engine (under 1k km), cuz the old one got blown up cuz of oil starvation

I would get a GR86 if it wasn't so underpowered. It's so slow

It's not imho. Unless you want to do freeway pulls. Then it's absolutely the wrong car.

Just buy a 2023 BRZ and throw in a super charger and you have a better supra for far less the cost that's far more reliable. . . FYI, most Toyotas today are built by Subaru anyway.

They are not tunable yet, but I expect there to be tunes as early as 2023. Most Toyotas are built by Toyota. Only the BRZ is built by Subaru.

Take the GR86 anyday. A sports car that does it all and has plenty of trunk space for my rifles for a range day

Lets be honest, the 86 looks way more like a Supra than the Supra

Toyota could make a fine BRZ if they put their own engine in it. The Subaru engines are notorious for awful quality control and it still is underpowered. I'm surprised there hasn't been a recall issued because of the rtv problems. I would imagine a class action lawsuit is on it's way.
The Supra, as everyone knows is a BMW. Regardless of what Toyota states, it will fall apart from by just sitting in the garage. Just about everything attached to the engine will break. I supply parts to our dealers and independent shops. Just like Scotty says, endless money pit. Enjoy your channel.

The Supra has been dead reliable and my friends’ Supras have been as well despite everyone abusing them.
