- Hello everyone! This week I sang Leaves From The Vine from Avatar: The Last Airbender (with extended lyrics by the lovely Reinaeiry mwuah thank you 😘)
I originally thought I’d be a WRECK while working on this song but turns out crying wasn’t the issue; accidentally slurring the words “soldier boy” and it sounding like “soulja boy” was. The amount of outtakes of me singing soulja boy is ungodly. Maybe it's time to make a blooper soundboard. Anyways.
(just a lil heads up: no upload next week bc i absolutely demolished my headphones last tuesday and don't think the new one will be here in time for me to mix!)

Friendly reminder: this was the last thing Mako (General Iroh's voice actor) recorded before his death from cancer. He knew he was dying at the time, so this song is as much a goodbye to us from Mako as it is to Lu Ten from Iroh.

It's even sadder once you realize that Iroh was a horrible person, a war chief, until his son died. Now, he's the most caring person on earth, but is too sad to be who he once was.

@@Gwaiinoots uncle iron is zukos uncle and iroh sang this in the show in memory of his son lu ten while in showrunners had the episode and sang dedicated to his first voice actor Mako who passed away during that time.
This was the last think Mako recorded before passing from cancer so it was like his little goodbye to us, I also love how his understudy who took over Iroh voice refuses to sing this song because “It’s Mako’s song”

@@WhiteRaven696 it wasnt actually the last thing he recorded. He was Iroh’s voice for the entire second season and there is no credible source I could find that says these were his last lines specifically. It only gets repeated everywhere on random posts and comment sections and people believe it.
@@lilaclupin5966 The episodes weren't recorded chronologically. His acting was used for later episodes, but that doesn't dictate what his last lines were.
@@johns6014 there is still no credible source that this is actually the last recording he did. I researched this topic a while ago for a presentation about this scene and the only sources I could find about this were things like reddit, no articles or anything.

I'm saying that the logic that he was credited in later episodes is a false argument to dismiss the possibility. Whether they were or not is irrelevant. I was speaking only of the faulty logic used in the argument against the claim.
the first half sounded like a lullaby that a Parent used to sing to their child & the other half sounded like it was added on by the parent grieving over the loss of their child in a war & wishing they come home. i like it

It's because the original va was dying from cancer, so he was singing this as a goodbye to all of his fans
He was not acting, he was, in fact, actually crying. He had just been diagnosed with cancer, and he knew he was dying.

I found this today, not even a week after losing my dad to cancer. The dam I'd been hiding my tears behind completely broke and I scared my dog with how hard I was crying. All I could think was I wanted dad to come marching home like he used to; proud and strong.

This sounds really sweet what happened to y'all
This song was the last thing the voice actor recorded before passing away. In the context of the show itself, he sung it to commemorate his son who died in a war started by their family, one in which the character singing had been a general. The character is known for being rather jolly and a father figure for his exiled nephew. Seeing him break down in remembrance of his son hit hard. So it is a double whammy right to the feels for those of us familiar with the show.

@@gallivantingfox9337 Even before I found out what happened to Mako, which didn't happen until years later, seeing Iroh in tears at the loss of his son was this painfully real, intimate experience. No bravado, no humor, nothing to soften the blow the way they so often do for kid's shows. Just a man baring the wounds of his soul.

For those who don’t know Mako was the original voice actor for Iroh he sadly passed before the end of season 2 leaving Iroh to only make 2 appearances in season 3 both of which he does not speak.

This song will always touch my heart. Iroh is saying goodbye and mourning his son, but Mako is saying goodbye to us as well. He gave voice to one of the best characters on the show and he knew his time was ending. I'll forever be grateful for Mako voicing Iroh, the uncle that tought us all so much and has wisdom in every word said.

@@shira3074 BTW, I can share my secret. If you want to watch almost any movie or tv show for free, just write the phrase in Google "NAME OF THE SHOW watch online in English" but in russian language. You see, Russians don't really pay for streaming, therefore there are a lot of free streaming services for those of them who want to learn English.
Uncle iroh is just the best and sweetest character in AtLA period.

Personally I love how all through the day he is cheerful and pleasant to everyone around him, even though he already has his basket packed and is on the way to hits chosen spot. It really shows sooo much about how grief can work, in a mostly healthy, way for kids show.

Today is the 16th anniversary of Tales of Ba Sing Se. Leaves from the Vine came from that and giving the fans a farewell to Mako. His sons face is actually a young Mako, to honor the voice actor who passed away after recording the song. Thank you for everything Mako. I used to watch ATLA all the time. Each day before school, if I was finished preparing early and I had some free time, I’d watch it with my mom. I recently rewatched a few of the episodes, and it really brought me back. Truly a great show.
Rest In Peace Mako. Your talent touched so many people. This episode was my favorite in the whole series because of the beautiful message it was able to deliver in such a short time. It makes me sob every time I watch it.
In the end, death is not our enemy, nor an end to fear, but the thing that makes life's journey, and its many moments sparkling like diamonds, worth more than any gift...

I don’t think there’s a scene that hurts more beautifully than Iroh singing for his deceased son. Thank you Anna for doing this song justice.

I remember crying and wanting to hug iroh then the song became even more painful again when I heard it again on the first anniversary of my mother in 2016 because I realized my grandparents had to bury a child like Iroh
Little do we appreciate how wise Iroh actually is. He is different from all other firebenders in the way that he uses his bending, for instance. Iroh almost never uses his bending offensively, and when he does, it is only in situations where he sees no other option (For example, when Zhao threatens to kill the moon spirit at the siege of the northern water tribe, which Iroh understands would have catastrophic effects on all nations). In every other situations, he uses his bending defensively. He will deflect and redirect attacks, but never does he attack himself. He is wise enough to understand the destructive potential of his powers, and only uses them when he deems all other options to have been exhausted.

Uncle Iroh was the first male figure in my life ( I didn't have the most ..stable childhood) who made me feel safe, and taught me stability and a bit to taking responsibility and now that I think about it.. taught me how I see the honor..I remember watching every episode as it aired on Nickelodeon every night before bedtime and they were my extended family, Katara I believe is how I learned to have to much empathy..and didn't help my separation anxiety from my mom and sokka taught me you never let you sibling go into anything alone even if your afraid.. but Uncle Iroh he was the first person to make me understand what foundation of family is. He called Zuko his son and never raised him as anything different even before saying it. After growing up and learning it was Makos death that changed the voice of Iroh I was devastated and now everytime I hear this song I mourn the good parts of my childhood.. thank you Uncle.
Ive been a fan of AtLA ever since i was little and just now the full weight of this song fell on me, this song is why uncle iroh pulled a full 180 into being the best person in the show, in irohs rage powered fire and need to continue the fire nations spread, his son went out in the war trying to make him proud, but he ended up dying out in the continued war, making iroh realize how much he lost from the anger, making him rethink everything and seek knowledge from the world of how to be better, how to build strength not from anger and rage, but from compassion, trust, and understanding of the world. He had to lose his son to become the amazing person he was in the show.
Why do kids shows do shit like this? How am i not supposed to cry rivers thinking of the sorrow my favorite characters had to go through?

I physically can't cry unless im in pain and this made me tear up. I haven't cried out of emotion in years, Anna you are a magical person. this was exceptional. Iroh is my favorite fiction character and this was so beautiful.

This is the perfect song to cry to during my grief of Technoblade’s unfortunate death at the hands of cancer. I understand I probably shouldn’t share it to every community, but it hurts. I never knew him in person, but I was his fan. Thank you Anna, for helping me grieve with the loss of one of my favorite creators. (Besides you of course.)

I can't express enough of how amazing of a rendition you did of this song. I cried rivers of tears because the added lyrics make the song so much more meaningful especially since now we know what Mako was going through.

The entire episode is very remarkable, both for the narrative and the behind-the-scenes story of the series. The fact that it's Mako's last makes this scene much more memorable. Even though I haven't seen the series in the original language, my heart sinks every time I hear this song and every time I say "Happy birthday, my son. If only I could have helped you." I start to cry.
