This song was the last thing the voice actor recorded before passing away. In the context of the show itself, he sung it to commemorate his son who died in a war started by their family, one in which the character singing had been a general. The character is known for being rather jolly and a father figure for his exiled nephew. Seeing him break down in remembrance of his son hit hard. So it is a double whammy right to the feels for those of us familiar with the show.
@@gallivantingfox Even before I found out what happened to Mako, which didn't happen until years later, seeing Iroh in tears at the loss of his son was this painfully real, intimate experience. No bravado, no humor, nothing to soften the blow the way they so often do for kid's shows. Just a man baring the wounds of his soul.

Rest In Peace Mako. Your talent touched so many people. This episode was my favorite in the whole series because of the beautiful message it was able to deliver in such a short time. It makes me sob every time I watch it.
Personally I love how all through the day he is cheerful and pleasant to everyone around him, even though he already has his basket packed and is on the way to hits chosen spot. It really shows sooo much about how grief can work, in a mostly healthy, way for kids show.

"Destiny Is A Funny Thing. You Never Know How Things Are Going To Work Out." General Iroh. "Life Happens Wherever You Are, Whether You Make It Or Not." General Iroh.
Little do we appreciate how wise Iroh actually is. He is different from all other firebenders in the way that he uses his bending, for instance. Iroh almost never uses his bending offensively, and when he does, it is only in situations where he sees no other option (For example, when Zhao threatens to kill the moon spirit at the siege of the northern water tribe, which Iroh understands would have catastrophic effects on all nations). In every other situations, he uses his bending defensively. He will deflect and redirect attacks, but never does he attack himself. He is wise enough to understand the destructive potential of his powers, and only uses them when he deems all other options to have been exhausted.
Uncle Iroh was the first male figure in my life ( I didn't have the most ..stable childhood) who made me feel safe, and taught me stability and a bit to taking responsibility and now that I think about it.. taught me how I see the honor..I remember watching every episode as it aired on Nickelodeon every night before bedtime and they were my extended family, Katara I believe is how I learned to have to much empathy..and didn't help my separation anxiety from my mom and sokka taught me you never let you sibling go into anything alone even if your afraid.. but Uncle Iroh he was the first person to make me understand what foundation of family is. He called Zuko his son and never raised him as anything different even before saying it. After growing up and learning it was Makos death that changed the voice of Iroh I was devastated and now everytime I hear this song I mourn the good parts of my childhood.. thank you Uncle.
This succeeded in making me cry. Your voice is so beautiful, it’s melodious tone fitting perfectly with the song. You also possess so much emotion, and I felt that in this song (I’m also so happy you posted something from ATLA).
This song and it's lyrics kills me and causes me to cry. I can't stop thinking about those people who have either parents or children as soldiers constantly praying for their loved ones to come home safe.
From all of the covers that you have ever made was this the most emotional in my opinion. It is wonderful! 💕 I already thought of this song as beautiful and so full of father love. But you made it even better with the polyphonic at the backround. You are a true artist with music! 💕
Anna, you truly made my day with this one. I recently listened to the original in the show again, wondering who covered it. It was a great surprise waking up just now seeing that you took your take on this. This song always had a heavy load because of the past surrounding it. Thank you for this wonderful cover, and I hope you have a great day
Ive been a fan of AtLA ever since i was little and just now the full weight of this song fell on me, this song is why uncle iroh pulled a full 180 into being the best person in the show, in irohs rage powered fire and need to continue the fire nations spread, his son went out in the war trying to make him proud, but he ended up dying out in the continued war, making iroh realize how much he lost from the anger, making him rethink everything and seek knowledge from the world of how to be better, how to build strength not from anger and rage, but from compassion, trust, and understanding of the world. He had to lose his son to become the amazing person he was in the show. Why do kids shows do shit like this? How am i not supposed to cry rivers thinking of the sorrow my favorite characters had to go through?
I feel so sad hearing this because the great dragon of the west...lost his only son and he was seen as a sign of weakness to others but to me...I see a father, a wise general, and...a human being

“Happy Birthday my Son. If only I could have helped you...” -Iroh, First born of Firelord Azulon, older brother of Ozai and father of Lu Ten, Uncle of Zuko and Azula. He lost one son but got another in his nephew, whom he helped bring peace and stability...🥺
Lullaby for a fire lord who never was...
I wasn’t planning to cry today
@@PrinceAlhorian It honestly make you wonder, in another world, what would have happen if Lu Ten wasn't killed and Iroh became Firelord instead of Ozai. Iroh probably was different before the death of his son broke him, but what we learn was that he was still a very honorable man.
@@sorcikator993 Iroh was a white lotus before his defeat at Bah Sing Se. I believe he would have stopped that senseless war in its tracks.
@@PrinceAlhorian Oh my god you're right! I forgot he was White Lotus! It make me think, maybe the White Lotus first approached Iroh, the designated heir to the Fire Nation, in an attempt to do just that: to bring peace at last.
As a soldier myself, i want this song to play at my funeral when i don't come marching home.
I'm sure you'll make it home.
When?
Don’t worry, you will
Thank you for your service :)
I hope you stay strong! 💜
imagine someone played this at your funeral.
*but uncle Iroh was aLiVe*
I would love this at a funeral
Oh you sad soul
Mako sang this within the week of receiving his cancer diagnosis iirc
@@michaelpolinsky4611 : (((
I absolutely want this played at my funeral
_I just want to know how she recorded this magical piece without absolutely destroying herself._
I really wanna know too .......
I'm betting this was sung over multiple recordings
It's already more than a week after Mako's birthday and this brings me into tears. We miss Uncle Iroh in this house. Well done, Anna! 😭
“Love is a form of energy and it swirls all around us...” Guru Pathik.
In the end, death is not our enemy, nor an end to fear, but the thing that makes life's journey, and its many moments sparkling like diamonds, worth more than any gift...
I don’t know what this is but I’m going to listen to this now
Edit: You hear that? It’s me finally getting the energy to watch Avatar for the first time
Oh I'd wanna be you then! The first time watching it as a kid was magical
I really want to see it!! Sadly I don’t have Netflix....
Yaaay! Welcome to the fanbase! I just got my ATLA tattoo after rewatching. Hope you enjoy it!!!
@@creativereader6033 There are other places to watch it online that don't require Netflix, or any paid service for that matter. Just depends if you know where to look
@@shira3074 BTW, I can share my secret. If you want to watch almost any movie or tv show for free, just write the phrase in Google "NAME OF THE SHOW watch online in English" but in russian language. You see, Russians don't really pay for streaming, therefore there are a lot of free streaming services for those of them who want to learn English.
Me, who doesn't know Avatar:
why is everyone crying-
This sounds really sweet what happened to y'all
This song was the last thing the voice actor recorded before passing away.

Didn't watch Avatar and still cried only because I watched the original
To tell the truth, i don't know Avatar well too
Im going to guess that whoever made those mistakes on writing lyrics did them because he couldnt see the screen through all those tears
My phone is about to die so I’m like ‘okay one more song.’ Then I see this and I’m like YES
Anna's powerful voice + This powerful song = No chance, we're all crying now
I can't even think of a proper meme comment for this song. This is the first time an animated tv show made me cry. DAMN YOU ANNA, WHY DO YOU GOTTA HIT ME IN THE FEELS?
Edit: *soulja* *boy* ?
Take your like and go.
I have never been able to watch this episode of ATLA without crying. That second and last verse just sent me sobbing.
I used to watch ATLA all the time. Each day before school, if I was finished preparing early and I had some free time, I’d watch it with my mom. I recently rewatched a few of the episodes, and it really brought me back. Truly a great show.
I did not want to cry today. yet here we are.
Me : * Prepares to be broken version extended. *
Fun fact: Greg Baldwin who voiced Iroh after Mako died refuses to ever sing this song.
he does what he can for the character, he does what he can when he can, the one thing he wont do is take over the song, they did ask him to re sing it for the special features and he refused, respecting the memory of Mako, to be clear Mike and Brian didnt ask him, Nickelodeon did
Actually it isnt that fun
THIS IS NOT FUN
Rest In Peace Mako. Your talent touched so many people. This episode was my favorite in the whole series because of the beautiful message it was able to deliver in such a short time. It makes me sob every time I watch it.
Personally I love how all through the day he is cheerful and pleasant to everyone around him, even though he already has his basket packed and is on the way to hits chosen spot. It really shows sooo much about how grief can work, in a mostly healthy, way for kids show.
"Little Soulja Boy" is what my mind hear most of the song.
The conflict
Listen to this at work and cry, or wait five hours to listen to this beautiful song and cry in the privacy of my own apartment?
Both
Both is good.
Please, when the original song was sad enough you come at us with this- 😭
"Its enough to make an old man cry"
This cover sounds so good...seriously keep at it!
I physically can't cry unless im in pain and this made me tear up. I haven't cried out of emotion in years, Anna you are a magical person. this was exceptional. Iroh is my favorite fiction character and this was so beautiful.
Person who wrote the lyrics: cry you will no matter how hard you try not to
i’m actually very upset i cried, i tried so hard not to, and i was fine until i saw a comment that said this was essentially Mako singing goodbye to himself (i think in the hospital?) so that was fun and now my head hurts
@@nishticar don't remind me it hurts
I actually didn’t cry I feel really sad though..
@@LemTheDemon same
@@LemTheDemon Same here, even if I haven't seen Avatar
This song always reminded me of the truth of war and that each of us is like a flame
We can bring light and warmth into the lives of other but we can also hurt and burn the world around us.
Alone each of us can easily be blown out like a candle in a storm.
But together we can shine as brilliantly as the sun and brave anything.
Who would've thought that Uncle Iroh would move so many people with his wise words, Rest in peace Mako Iwamatsu.
Also, for those who don't know, Mako from TLOK was named after him. Mako Iwamatsu will always be missed and remembered.🥺❤
Every year, this day brings me back to this song. Thank you for the beautiful extended cover😢.
I can't express enough of how amazing of a rendition you did of this song. I cried rivers of tears because the added lyrics make the song so much more meaningful especially since now we know what Mako was going through.
Such a great Song please keep up your amazing work.❤
The song that make men cry bye the voice that melt hearts omg
Anna woke up this morning and decided to make everyone cry with her amazing voice
Oh boy here I go crying again
I was about to cry but then I checkes the description and read how Anna kept slurring "soldier boy" into "soulja boy" so that just made me snort djdkkdk
HOWEVER I JUST GOT TO THAT REALLY PRETTY VOCALIZATION AND HOLY HELL MY SOUL HAS ASCENDED ANNA YOU GODDESS
It's even more magical because I asked for this song on stream like, 2-3 weeks ago, and now it's here! Anna probably didn't see it but, this is magical!
"Destiny Is A Funny Thing. You Never Know How Things Are Going To Work Out."
General Iroh.
"Life Happens Wherever You Are, Whether You Make It Or Not."
General Iroh.
Just what I needed. Now I'm bawling. This is the song you play to get an Avatar fan to cry. Its that f***ing easy. Keep up the amazing work annapantsu
Well, I needed a good cry tonight anyway. Thank you for the tears, Anna. 😭🍂🍃
I haven’t heard yet and I’m already crying😭
Update: Crying more after watching😭😭😭
This is beautiful, brings tear to my eye. IM glad you took the time to make a full song.
This song and it's lyrics kills me and causes me to cry. I can't stop thinking about those people who have either parents or children as soldiers constantly praying for their loved ones to come home safe.
“Zuko it’s time you look in and ask your self the big questions!”
-Uncle Iroh
From all of the covers that you have ever made was this the most emotional in my opinion. It is wonderful! 💕
I already thought of this song as beautiful and so full of father love.
But you made it even better with the polyphonic at the backround.
You are a true artist with music! 💕
Never watched Avatar before, but this sounds beautiful
Highly recommend you do
It still holds up really well. It's definitely worth watching
I'll toss my recommendation in as well. It's wonderful
I do as well recommend this and Its season 2 when you get to hear this wonderful song look forward to it
you really should
Anna, you truly made my day with this one.
I feel so sad hearing this because the great dragon of the west...lost his only son and he was seen as a sign of weakness to others but to me...I see a father, a wise general, and...a human being
You come to my home! You make me feel emotion! The audacity.
In reality this is a beautiful cover, amazing as always
This song makes me cry everytime I hear it
Thank you for covering this song. I honestly didn't know there was an extended version in the first place.
Listening to this now, I feel like Iroh was saying goodbye to his son and Mako said goodbye to us.
Today is the 16th anniversary of Tales of Ba Sing Se. Leaves from the Vine came from that and giving the fans a farewell to Mako. His sons face is actually a young Mako, to honor the voice actor who passed away after recording the song. Thank you for everything Mako. You were everyone’s uncle and we still cherish the memories, as well your wisdom. Make tea not war. 🍵 🫖
😭😭😭😭😭😭🍵
Pour one out for Uncle 🫖
Well now I'M tearbending! Jokes aside, this was absolutely splendid. For years I have been unable to cry, perhaps tear up but never cry. The one exception to that curse is this song, and this cover has temporarily lifted my curse, for I find myself flooding the room with tears.
“Happy Birthday my son, if only I could have helped you”
Rest in peace Mako
If Katara knew how to water bend like this Master Paku would've accepted her immediately.😭
I love avatar and this song. thank you for making this song among the over covers and extending it to.
I was just watching a video of sister’s act “I will follow him” and I thought “Annapantsu could make a great cover of this song”
The combination of the beautiful lyrics and Anna’s angelic singing voice is just *chef’s kiss* 😘
jesus i’m crying rn. such a beautiful song and with ur voice it honestly just makes it better. much love 🥲
Oh my god this is such an amazing cover.
I'm legit shivering from the sadness and beauty of this song. This is one of my favourite cartoon/anime from my childhood and the original song was awesome too but I'm honestly struck by this. You have an amazing voice and it just makes this even more spectacular so thank you very very much🙏
Ok you didnt have to make me cry like this.
No matter how old i get this song always makes me cry, last year was hard for my family as i lost somebody close to me and i was unable to get this song from my head for a long while
I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing this. Those harmonies are absolutely stunning.
You have done something thought to be impossible. You made Leaves From The Vine sadder. :'(
