I'm a sculptor. I use two Hero8s to video me sculpting. I bought the 8s, knowing they work on voice command. Now I've ordered items in the past, with features I was looking for, only to be disappointed in the end. Not with the 8.. This little camera is a beast.. it starts perfectly on command.. when syncing two cameras that's a huge plus for me.. The video quality and exposure is the best I've ever used.. THE BEST... Love my two 8s...
I was expecting to see a front facing screen on the 8. Oh, but I can buy one for $80. Combine that with an unserviceable lens and I just bought the DJI Osmo Action. Gopro let me down on this model.
The 8 is my first GoPro and even though I have no way to compare it to others it's genuinely perfect in my eyes (save for that non-replaceable lens cover, I agree), It allowed me to start my biking channel just the way I wanted, mounting it on my helmet gives just the right perspective in superview and hypersmooth (that I keep on 1.0 to give it just the right amount of dynamism) is perfect to avoid hurling from all the bumps that you get bombing down the hills. And I agree, audio is superb, with a few tweaks in post it sounds fantastic. Overall, I'm extremely happy I waited this long to get a gopro

It's good to look forward to innovation but, unless I see some tangible changes, I'll always keep a judgemental look to whatever they come up with next, until it proves to be tangibly worthy of praise. For now, quality wise, the 8 is a real jewel. With whatever info we have until now it all looks like gimmicks. Front facing screen? Seriously? With a superwide lens it never was an issue until now to do selfie shots... The real innovation would be a sensor change that would allow hypersmooth 2.0 to be used in superview so... Yeah
I generally prefer the H8 to our H7 (except for the lens stuff everyone mentions). I have found the hyper smooth to be too "floaty" at times...not sure that I will use the Boost setting much more.
Having issues with waking up. “Go pro turn on” this is not just me. A lot of people having this problem and some commands. On 7 black these commands are freaking flawless
As someone who has experienced having to replace two GoPro screen protectors, it is the issue that keeps me from buying the 8. After that one, nothing else matters. It was a huge mistake on GoPro’s part. I think they figured that they din’t get much complaints over the Hero 7 Silver and White, so no body will complain this time too. Big misreading of the fact that there were few complaints because for those of us for whom it is a big deal had the choice of buying the black edition. That is still true, except that the Black we choose is the 7, and definitely not the 8.
and your b camera dropping focus , was the reason I went away from panos and canon over to sony for UT videos. I've been tossing up over the 8 since my 7 freezes often and overheats. My 2 5 blacks dont do this. I'm just about to head out to grab the 8. fingers crossed i get a good example. whats selling it for me is the new beta lab firmware.

I beg you, do an experiment that I think will turn out popular. Use a gopro and only a gopro for your next X videos, or for the next month, or however long you like, and tell us if your views went down, or your statistics show a lag somehow in the timeframe you used it.
I 100% agree with the stupidity of GoPro of not allowing the consumer to replace the glass but I installed a glass screen protector like I do on my iPhones over the years and I havn’t had any issues.

Gopro max hero mode has replaced my gopro 8 for action stuff. If the 9 would just combine all 8 features with all max features it would be the perfect camera and dominate.
I might be able to deal with the 1080p limitation on the GoPro Max IF they had some more frame rates. The lack of SLO-MO is really disappointing. Also, it’s a shame they still don’t have an underwater housing for the Max (underwater footage with 360 cameras is useless).
Hi everyone need some help and opinion of yours. I am going to buy an action camera for the first time. I am in Malaysia and their is not much price difference between 7 and 8. I am just worried about the lens. My question would be: How easy or likely is that the lens will get broken or scratched? Now I know this will depend on the use. I am just a beginner so their wont be any intentional hard use for sure. But what about accidental drops? Guys, in your experience does the screen or lens break or scratch with accidental drops? I would love some advice from you all.
Great review. I just bought a hero8 for surfing. Would you suggest the waterproof housing or is the waterproof durability pretty solid on these? I briefly had a H7 and found sand sneaking into usb port easily. Maybe the case is worth the extra weight and hassle to extend camera life and save cleaning so often.

My good days ended very soon with my last two Hero 7 Black units. It somehow kills its capability of detecting audio adapter and this is end of world for me.
I filmed my last video entirely with it and it worked great except it doesn’t focus well up close. Not designed for it but lesson learned. I also have filmed some indoor basketball games and it does well for something it wasn’t really design for. Lack of zoom obviously hurts in that scenario though. But the stabilization is so good I don’t focus on holding still at all. I just hold it and point in the general direction. Come spring I will be doing lots of motorcycle tests with it
Just got my 8 black yesterday, no roll cage in the case, but to be fair I didn't know I could remove the thing on my 6 black hah =) I regret buying the 6, I should have held back for the 7...but again to be fair, using it on hikes, instead of my 80d with 17-55mm 900 dollar lens saved me from needing to buy another 900 dollar 17-55mm...I trip a lot hah! Love the content keep it rocking!

Great video, thanks! I have the Sony AX53 and the GoPro 8. The AX 53 is a few years old now, but the stabilisation... Sure, they are different. But for many situations i still prefer the AX53 (normal shooting, not Indiana Jones action stuff). At least, it has the media-mod build inside... ;) Maybe that is a little bit off-topic, but i think people considering buying a GoPro should take a look at the AX53!
Great review for the time it was made. I hope posting on this older video helps your channel. Here's my take now that I have owned the 8 for a year and a 9 for half that, they suck!!! I have two Hero 5 Blacks, two Hero 6 Black's one Hero 7 Black, one Hero 8 Black that no longer works and a Hero 9 Black. The 7 has a cracked back screen and still works down to 10 feet in Mission Bay. Filming under water with a GH5, I have the Hero 7 on top of the Sea Frog and the GoPro 8 on my face mask. Loved the stabilization of the 8! When it worked. That was maybe 40% of the time. Battery life sucks. I found the 7 with stabilization in Davinci Resolve 17 Studio brought the 7 to better then the 8. A year of hard use on land and under the sea 🌊 and the 8 was a very bad investment. The 9 gets used by my partner with one of the GoPro 6 on her face mask. She uses the 9 on a long stick to film closeup from a distance under water. We use it this wY because of all the trouble it causes and can't be just turned on and be reliable. The 8 was never reliable either but now it's dead.
I'm looking to buy a gopro as a dedicated camera do it all but torn between of the 8 and 7 black, mainly because of the non removable lens however that ease of use with 8 is amazing. Does putting tempered glass on the lens affects the video/picture quality?
Would you say I should buy this or the 6 for kayaking trips? I don't need stabilization that much since I am at the water. The price difference is 200 euro. Thanks a lot :)
I just bought one a couple days ago and the touchscreen was garbage. It kept becoming non responsive or would delay react to touch making it unusable. I'm waiting for the exchange unit in hopes it'll be as good as all the reviewers I see navigating theirs.

So I'm really in crisis mode right now. Do I upgrade to 7 or 8? I'm leaning towards 7, but I don't know? Maybe should I wait for 9? But what if they don't go back to replacement lenses? Should I switch the brands and for what? And throw the GoPro accessories in the garbage? they really fucked up with the integrated lens.
I think you make very useful videos. But I do wish you would stop praising action cams for having touch screens. I use my action cameras to scuba dive and also to ski. In both instances I wear gloves that render touchscreens unsuable. A good action cam in my opinion retains full operation even within a waterproof housing, or whilst wearing full thick gloves or both. One thing the Hero 8 has which I believe previous models do not is that it allows you to use the power and shutter button to select your preset. This is huge, for the first time on a scuba dive I can change settings whilst im 100 feet down. Yet no mention? Right, rant over. Keep up the good work!

I got overheating problem recording on 1080/30/W, (all turned OFF: wi-fi, gps, voice command, hyper-smooth, screen set to be off after 1min, screen brightness on 10%) and still overheating over 70°C (158°F ). I guess that is expected for such small device to heat up while recording in 4K 60fps but this is ridiculous, so I'm trying to find out is this for all gopro 8 or maybe for some batches? Please let me know if you got Gopro 8 and you did some recording over 30min in 1080 or 2.7 or 4k?

Bo Yan what environment were you shooting in? I had my gopro setup on a tripod indoors. I was able to record for an hour and 50 minutes on the battery in 4k24fps hypersmooth set to high and connects all off. It got a bit warm but it wasn’t hot.
I mean its dumb that you cant exchange the lens. But Gopro plus is pretty damn cheap, and they exchange broken cameras no questions asked. So it seems to me they just want you you to use the insurance instead of making separate lenses.
I have a GoPro 8 and it is garbage. After one year it skips clips and after 20 calls to support no help. Really sucks to pay 400.00 for something and it is useless.

How does max compare to gp8 in terms of video quality? I always shoot on 2,7k and I am afraid of loosing too much quality in hero mode. Thx in advance

I heard the hero 8 black has problems with 3rd party batteries.
My hero 7 black has been using the $20 three pack from amazon just fine.
I just use the standard batteries, I haven’t had a chance to see a problem sorry.

The 8 is sooo irrelevant, treat it as it doesn't exist. Go from 7 to 9. Scratch the lens on an 8 and its game over! Nice review

what mode are you shooting in?
I got overheating problem recording on 1080/30/W, (all turned OFF: wi-fi, gps, voice command, hyper-smooth, screen set to be off after 1min, screen brightness on 10%) and still overheating over 70°C (158°F

Bo Yan what environment were you shooting in? I had my gopro setup on a tripod indoors. I was able to record for an hour and 50 minutes on the battery in 4k24fps hypersmooth set to high and connects all off. It got a bit warm but it wasn’t hot.
I mean its dumb that you cant exchange the lens. But Gopro plus is pretty damn cheap, and they exchange broken cameras no questions asked. So it seems to me they just want you you to use the insurance instead of making separate lenses.
I have a GoPro 8 and it is garbage. After one year it skips clips and after 20 calls to support no help. Really sucks to pay 400.00 for something and it is useless.
