    BTS has always had a larger international fanbase than a Korean fanbase. That’s a big reason why they blew up so much internationally, they already had fans around the world that was campaigning for BTS to get opportunities in western industries (very grassroots esp in the US, I remember those days fondly ☺️)

    You will see it in future chapters, but BTS at that time were getting fame but they were not rich. It was still 2014 so they had still been in the industry for a year and the company being small did what they could to promote them but they didn't have a big budget. I consider that they did American Hustle Life because they saw it as a great opportunity for the members to learn, but while they were there they were working for "Dark & Wild" album, an album that they really hoped would be very successful because the company was in danger. BTS did win awards, but they were low category awards and for rookies, so the bigger awards they still didn't get because they weren't that famous and being from a small company they hadn't been given that much importance. The starting point really was in 2015 and then in 2016 is when you could say they really started with everything we know now.
    I don't know if anyone has said it in the comments, but when there are scenes where you talk about the kpop industry it's important for you to keep in mind that for BTS it was something different. They were really involved in their music from the very beginning and they were writing all the lyrics, something not very common for idols but that's why BTS is different. That's why a lot of people started to be interested in them, they are different from the usual groups. It's really interesting the documentary because the editor wanted to reflect the difference between the kpop industry and BTS with the images. Like for example, when the voiceover said "the idols couldn't go outside" you can clearly see how the boys really did go outside. What I mean, is that yes it's true that like the other industries, Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE) had their rules but BTS had more freedoms, so to speak. The biggest difference is clearly the artists' freedom of expression.
    BTS and Bang Si Hyuk ("Hitman Bang" or the CEO) have a very good relationship with each other. They really grew up together as artists and are very fond of each other. ARMY is also very fond of Bang Si Hyuk.

    It's hard to believe, but despite their early fame they didn't have a lot of money during this period, they started making more money around chapter 10/11ish. The dorm you see in chapter 5 is still their pre-debut dorm and by chapter 6 they had already released 3 EPs along with their first full length album, but most of the money was reinvested to build up the company and get them more exposure. BTS is the reason the label is as big as it is now from near bankruptcy, that's why they're shareholders now too.

  • @ghfjdkslaghfjdksla

    I think Wes is kinda right about the small company advantage. Because BigHit didn't have access to those traditional promotional spaces in South Korea they relied on social media like Twitter and UA-cam in ways other kpop groups hadn't been fully utilizing, which gave them greater exposure to international fans. You saw so many other groups copy BTS after they started to get big in this way

    • @em5522
      @em5522 2 роки тому +2

      True. Before, I think kpop grps' social media tended to either be managed by someone else and/or weren't very active and was typically for more professional use (like announcements and such).
      And I believe companies would promote this barrier between idols and fans to promote how their idols were celebrities (at least, that's the feeling I got).
      BTS really changed the game with the way they utilized social media, and now, everyone's basically doing what they did.

      I think it's a prevalent way of thinking in many Asian countries at least in East Asia and Thailand, where I live in. No matter how good you are, you could be God tier in what you're doing and people acknowledge it, you don't say it yourself. You still have to say you'll work harder and show no signs of you knowing that you're the shit. Or people will go, "Wow, we know you're that good but now you think you're above us? We like you before but now you're just an arrogant prick." Happens to too many good people in my country...

    Wes & Steph, you both are so adorable together! I love your honest reactions and comments. This series gets better and better with each episode! Anessa shared it's almost complete which would end with Chapters 22 & 23 (I think). Several fun facts about Chapter 5:
    - There were cringey moments in this 8-episode reality show, but the lessons the guys learned was very important to their understanding and appreciation for Hip Hop history and culture.
    - The final task they had to complete was to do a free mini concert at the Troubadour in LA. Although you would see them passing out fliers on the streets to ask people to come to their concert, in reality, they didn't need to because it was tweeted on their Twitter account. Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) was actually in line for this concert and she shared that many ARMY were in line and she had missed getting into the show by a few people (the cut off was at 200)! You can find the video of the concert on UA-cam or Daily Motion.
    - Here is the link to their performance of BTS version of Regulate (with English Subtitles) which they performed at The Troubadour : ua-cam.com/video/BB9tnKEIlNE/v-deo.html
    - The movie Sister Act II was loosely based on Iris Stevensen (the vocal teacher) life.

      I mean, they did well enough for a nugu group and were definitely growing a loyal fanbase.
      I think they had a reasonably good run for album sales in the beginning, but their title tracks before 2015 didn't do as well as on the charts as hoped. They did okay but it was still a gamble for them (particularly so, in their company's situation) to keep going. Tho tbf, most other similarly financially lacking companies would've probably dropped them, so I can see why questions might've been raised abt their next cb. However, they were certainly growing, esp internationally.
      But I think their growth was only seemingly moderate until 2015. That's when they first noticeably shot up in popularity.

    1:29:22 Stephanie you asked what set them apart, my answer is you are watching it. See how well documented their journey is? With so many random content with most of them talking about their genuine feelings at the moment? Yeah that wasn't common in those days for kpop

  • @alexisx4368
    @alexisx4368 2 роки тому +17

    @Steph
    1:33:37 Yes! That's why up to this day, no matter how people try, *BTS is untouchable* . Because they didn't go through the normal idol way of using the company's assets (at that point, BTS were the only asset that Big Hit had) to promote themselves, they owe no one anything. Other idols become "industry darlings" (which isn't a bad thing, it just means that they have to please the higher ups before their own interests) but for BTS, ARMYs have always and will always be the driving force behind their success. Your reactions to BTS is one example of that. It's ARMY culture to promote BTS and push them onto locals, which is why the fandom just keeps growing and growing. So when we say "BTS paved the way", we mean it. It's not that other artists didn't get to the Western industry before BTS - it's that BTS opened the door wide enough to allow those after them to come in easily. PSY himself acknowledges it - "I'm thankful to BTS for achieving what I couldn't". As we say, "PSY peeked through the door of the Western industry, waved, then left. BTS opened the door and strolled right in." K-pop albums weren't sold in local stores in other countries, not before ARMYs rang up these stores and expressed the demand. Stationhead, a music streaming platform, was unknown before @btschartdata (one of the top ARMY accounts on Twitter) decided to stream songs there to help our numbers (Spotify, UA-cam, and Apple Music were filtering our streams thinking we were bots). Now, Stationhead can rival Spotify - and K-pop groups (like TXT, BTS's juniors in Big Hit) are giving interviews there.
    (Also: BTS and their label try their best to put out content that they have utmost control over. RUN BTS is proof of that. Another one is Weverse, a social media app like Twitter that Big Hit/HYBE built for their artists (but it now has everyone). Weverse is where BTS streamed their online concerts (paid with digital tickets), instead of making a deal with other bigger platforms like Naver (Korean Google). That's why the media still downplays the group's achievements, because the big giants can't make money from their success.

    The time period right now is still around 2014. And while the fanbase was growing slowly this still wasn't their big 'peak' (for that period) and the company was still relatively poor as their albums didn't do as well as needed. The thing that sets BTS apart from other kpop groups is that they tried to form a connection with their fans first. Like filming vlogs and posting even b4 debut. They also didn't focus too much on making it big in Korea only. Whatever opportunities arose they took it.

    I'm a big advocate of every ARMY watching AHL. It's no more "cringe" than Rookie King and the boys learned a lot. To this day they talk about it as a meaningful experience. Also given how problematic a lot of kpop groups' approach to hip hop has been (just the other day an idol said hip hop was about "cool things and swag and words like that"), I'm nothing but grateful Coolio (who is a pioneer in the craft of hip hop) sat the boys down and said "hip hop isn't about gold chains and bandanas, this is my life--this is cultural, this is political, this is the history of a people and you have to know that if you want to call yourselves 'hip hop artists.'" I'm sure as a og black rap artist, he was at the forefront of the industry criticism which considered rap explicit and not artistic on its face. And some of our boys didn't actually know about hip hop at all. Our rappers/writers grew up in it through either rap or dance but in the pre-show interview for AHL, when asked what hip hop is, Jungkook said "black" (referring to the color of their debut wardrobe) and V said "handsome." They needed the lesson.

      Yes. I agree. But AHL treated BTS very ruthlessly. And as thankful BTS is for those lessons, BTS do not speak highly about AHL. In one content ( I am sorry, I can't remember where) when AHL came up, Joon said " let's not talk about that" or something of that sort. He ignored the topic. So maybe they particularly don't have very good memory associated with AHL. I watched AHL and would suggest ARMYs to watch it, but the show had many faults. And I completely understand if some ARMY don't want to watch it, because they don't want to see BTS being treated so poorly.

    • @HadassaMoon144

      The only part where they were treated harshly was with Coolio which I later heard production asked him to act all "hard" and that one loser "mentor " that they got rid of after he showed his as*. Most Kpop groups hate looking back on their old shows and call it a dark era. I really don't think that BTS themselves are hurt over that show. It's good TV to see them in their youunger days.

    • @em5522
      @em5522 2 роки тому +6

      I really wish ppl would not discourage others from watching it just bc they found the 1st ep "cringe" or didn't like a guest. I don't mind the warnings but telling ppl to not watch it at all, esp when it contains such precious moments of growth for the guys, is depriving new ARMYs from golden material abt how amazing the guys have been since their early days and some of the iconic moments they made. And they miss out on some incredibly wonderful ppl who helped BTS on their journey.
      And while I can understand preferring ppl wanting Coolio to being a kinder teacher, it's incredibly rude to just vilify him when he actually gives a good reason for being a hard teacher. Like he said, the music and culture saved his life, so I bet seeing ppl treat it so flippantly _would_ be grating (and isn't it the same for us when ppl treat BTS as some bubblegum pop boy band?).
      At least, he deserves props for actually trying to give them good advice abt being musicians and for acknowledging and praising their efforts and music instead of just dismissing them as wannabes. He's not like a certain mentor who disappeared after being a complete jerk for no given reason.
      Plus, Coolio was a lot nicer in the extra unofficial released mnet clips, so that makes me believe that he was asked to be tougher on the guys too (another reason why it's important to watch the whole series before casting judgement).

    1:50:58 actually even tho they were gaining popularity, they weren't as big as you might think them to be at this point. they were doing really really well (they were called monster rookies for a reason) but 1. most of their fanbase was based outside of korea and they were still very much looked down on by their peers, other k-pop groups' fans and even the general public and 2. they were still just a year into their career, so from the k-pop industry lense they were still considered a pretty new group. they get more and more freedom in their schedules as they time goes by but they definitely were still following stricter schedules and had certain obligations while having more freedom in music and creativity

    The reason why BTS exploded in the international market, is because traditional Korean media (controlled by big music labels) was not giving them any chance to promote themselves. Because their company was small, and BTS were not operating like the way the media wanted K-pop groups to act.
    So BTS start using more international media like UA-cam (you saw their vlogs), and they have been using Twitter since 2012. All these media which the International audience had easy access to make BTS more accessible to international consumers, rather than other K-pop groups who's sole focus was on Korea.

    Those types of old neighborhoods in Korea aren’t some type of institutionalized thing like a nursing homes. It’s simply old neighborhoods. Full stop. Cheap, small, run-down areas where ppl who have lived there for so long remain (usually bc it’s cheap and familiar).
    The rest of the area around them get revamped, and made into high rise apartments, but people like these grandmothers have lived their long before all that and stay there

    I’ll probably have a lot of comments here so I’ll do what I did last time and just come back to edit this one 😆
    - This series is edited by an Army called Aneesa and she has done an incredible job on it!
    - the amount of hate they got back then was so ridiculous and they get even more now. Whenever I see RM reading the mean comments I think if what I read saying that he used to translate hate comments written in English to something positive in Korean for the other members 😭
    - the ‘I’ll prove it’ from RM is so powerful now and people have been using it to show the contrast from them to now as their new album coming out on June 10th is called proof 💕
    - Not all idols go to ‘special’ schools but Jungkook went to the School of performing arts in Seoul
    - I 100% get what Jimin was talking about it’s so disappointing turning 18 and realising that everything is the same as it was the day before 😅
    - the Cypher series is insane!! If your interested it would be great to see your react to the full songs at some point (there’s 4 cyphers)
    - Sugas given back to fans like that a few times and it’s the sweetest thing ever 🥰
    - I can’t watch that clip of Jhope seeing his parents video without feeling like I wanna cry 😭 it always makes me emotional
    - 38:44 they’re 9 year anniversary is in 16 days 💜
    - the names of all these episodes are BTS song titles :)
    - I’m pretty sure the dorm they have now is in one of the most expensive place in Seoul but they don’t live there full time anymore (it was actually in their life goes on MV)
    - you make think he seems intimidated but BTS and bang PD actually have a really close relationship with each other!
    - American hustle life is so so cringey and uncomfortable to watch in my opinion and they were disrespected so much in that series but there is also some great moments that came from it
    - Iris was the one of the best things to come out of American hustle life 🤣 so was so sweet to them
    - they all have siblings! and Jin and his older brother own a restaurant together :)
    - in the uk, out ‘firework day’ is 5th November
    - 1:11:00 at that point they’d released 3 albums but that was their first full length album
    - they currently have over 700 awards 😅
    - there was probably other factors to it but Jk joined big hit because of RM 😆
    - not 100% sure in this but last I heard it was 30:70 for company- bts but they also now own shares in hybe
    - supreme boi was a trainee but he’s also now a BTS in house producer
    - to this day in their behind the scenes concert they mention about feeling nervous that one day people might not show up but that definitely something they will never have to worry about

    Keep in mind the reason why the editor shows you the usual practices in the kpop industry is to show how Bighit and BTS took a slightly different path. She is trying to draw a comparison and not trying to tell you this is how it was for BTS as well. I have seen a few misunderstand it. There were some rules to them initially but it wasn't anywhere as harsh or close to what other entertainment companies had. For example, BTS never had the no dating rule and they don't have any plastic surgery done (Rm had a rhinoplasty on his nose due to medical issues stating he had trouble breathing but it wasn't for aesthetic purposes)

    42:04 Fast forward to 2022, now their dorm, where they live is THE MOST EXPENSIVE property in South Korea called "Hannam the Hill". They all have their separate apartments now which are all some of the most expensive ones in their country but during comeback or promotion times all 7 of them still come together to stay at Hannam the Hill in their common dorm. The "Life goes on" MV was shot at this dorm in Hannam the Hill. There is a clip of their reaction to Grammy nominations in which they were at their Hannam the Hill dorm. You see it from time to time during their Vlives as well.

    this area bts visited was a place of poverty in seoul. typically, elderly people in sk tend to be poor as pensions are not too generous as a result of expectations that many of them will conform to the aspect of korean culture wherein elderly people tend to live with their grown children after retirement - so i guess the government often assumes the elderly don’t need that much money because they’ll be supported by their working adult children. however, it often leaves elderly people with no family to do such things in poverty. that’s probably why the first grandma said to the guys “you remind me of my nephews” instead of grandsons or sons as she probably has no children of her own to support her. many of them probably are widows, if you keep in mind they would’ve been young women during the events of the korean war, who didn’t want to or couldn’t marry again. i’ve also read stories about elderly women without families because they experienced being “comfort women” to the japanese imperial army as young women and were then too traumatised for the rest of their life to be in relationships with men and start families. it’s very upsetting - more special considerations need to be made by the sk government for elderly people without families to get a more generous pension to afford to live comfortably independently.

    Back in 2014, I heard about BTS 'coz they were known to be different and maybe odd😂 Their concepts, the topics they chose to address, definitely the lyrics, them coming from a small company, and the members being involved in all process of music production were all new to (most) kpop listeners at that time. In short, it gained people's attention and eventually loved them.

    also i have a suggestion before you watch the next three episodes! i recommend watching "bts hardships 2013-2021" by xceleste. it's upsetting to watch and but the next 3 episodes go into it in more detail. i'm saying this because during one of the episodes in this video they discuss how there wasn't that much korean music outside certain genres that spoke about real issues, but what they were implying is that bts were different from other groups and spoke about socioeconomic crises, individuality, mental health etc. i wasn't sure if you caught that part since you guys haven't seen the lyrics apart from what's shown in the videos. which is why i recommend the hardship videos because it discusses the accusations, racism and mistreatment they had to face and it provides full context of the situations!

    A little extra info on American Hustle Life: (49:40) there was some bullying by one of the “hip hop teachers” who ended up putting hands on one of the members. Suga got mad and it was cut of but from what Army know that man was fired from the show.
