  • Game had to be re-posted because of minor copyright issue. One of the more entertaining games from the 1980 season. RB Earl Campbell finds the going tough, in his 1st appearance at Shea Stadium. The Oilers will need to depend on their passing game to win.

    What was the difference between the 1980 Jets and the 81 jets? It’s crazy how they rebounded so suddenly the next year!

    • @spryfolII
      @spryfolII 2 роки тому +3

      The answer to your question is in the question itself. The Jets from 1978 - 80 had 1. Some of the best drafts in the NFL. 2. They proved they had good personnel, but they were young, and did what the Jets usually did. Get off to slow starts, have the injury bug hit, committ terrible penalties at the wrong times, turn the ball over in crucial times (Richard Todd ints) and the biggest thing...pure inconsistency. Winning games they had no business winning, but losing games they had great opportunities to win. That's the Jets! But!!! Something happened in 1981. After their usual slow start, no one believed in them anymore. This took a ton of pressure off and with the addition of Freeman McNeil (who is one of the most important players in Jets history) the Jets had a bonefied, legitimate running game. Clark Gaines and Doornick the Jets could control the clock, then with the weapons at WR and TE, Todd had a variety of ways to attack the defense and score points. But the biggest and most noticeable difference was the Jets defensive line and smart, aggressive linebackers combines with decent secondary play made the Jets a team to be reckoned with. The most important game in 1981 was the comeback against the Dolphins at Shea. The Fish were such a thorn in their side back then. If Todd doesn't ball out in that 4th Quarter and they lose, it probably derails their season. But they won, and that validated them and set the stage for some good, memorable years from then on. The 1981 Jets were the most important team in their history and it happened to the Giants the same way, in the same season. Only difference (and its a HUGE difference) the Giants went on and won 4 Super Bowls after and the Jets have been to 3 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, and no Super Sunday love. That 1981 season is so underrated. Go back and look at that season and you'll agree .

    This was probably the best 4th quarter of the season in the NFL. This game is also the one that cost the Oilers the AFC Central, and HFA throughout the playoffs.

    I loved how Earl played the game. Get up really slow and methodically after being tackled, then walk back to the huddle at turtle speed then run wide open like a mad bull on the next play. Even when he had a poor performance he was still fun to watch much like Barry Sanders.

      Shea Stadium DID have outstanding football atmosphere, plus, it was old schooled and had an old school field, lots of blowing dirt and harsh winds, P.S. The Jets moving from Shea Stadium to New Jersey was a very big mistake!

    I was at this game: Jets were up 21-0 and Stabler shook off his hangover to tie it before the Jets won at the buzzer. I used to get off the 7 at 111th in Corona to get breaded fried chicken at the Deli there to take to the game (saved money). Fun season, Shea wasn't bad for football but they had to move the stands and it wasn't a good vantage point. This is also why there was so much foul territory for Mets games (I went to tons of those too).

    Nice find, Richard ! Stabler vs. Todd in a battle of future failed Saints QBs under the Oilers coach, Phillips, ironically. Oilers ended up a wild card team that year, while the Jets won only four times and were the only team to lose to the Saints.

      Doesn't surprise me. But then the Oiler defense gave up three touchdowns, so it's not like Stabler was the only one at fault.

      Cost the Oilers a division title. They had to go on the road as a wild card and the Raiders killed them. That led to Bum getting fired and bringing on the 81-86 eta of bad football

    • @fromthefarside

      SingleTax Stabler threw 4 ints. & one was a pick "6".

    • @SingleTax

      He also threw four touchdowns. If the defense had merely held the Jets to a field goal instead of a touchdown on one of their touchdown drives, the Oilers would have won. But they didn't, so they lost.

    Not a bad performance from a supposedly washed-up Ken Stabler. I'm surprised he had any arm left to go deep like he did on that one TD to Caster.

    • @lewisgottschalk2178
      @lewisgottschalk2178 3 роки тому +2

      He was washed up. His arm, especially on the deep throw was was basically gone during his last two years (1978-79) as a Raider. As an Oiler and later Saint, his interception rate went way up, as did his fumbles, and Oilers were going nowhere with Stabler. He played poorly in the playoff game vs Raiders, (Lester Hayes picked him off twice, one for a TD) and he regressed badly the next year. Never liked the Raiders, but always liked Stabler's game, and he should have made the HOF much earlier.

    Jets will finish 4-12. They will be the only team to lose to the Saints that year, losing at home.
    They will make make the playoffs the next two years. Losing to the Dolphins in 1982 AFC Champ. game.

      Jets were supposed to be a playoff team in 80. Then started off 81 0-3 and it looked hopeless. But somehow Walt Michael's wasn't fired and it all changed from there as they went 10-2-1 the rest of the way and made the playoffs.

    Bum Phillips was overrated. Look at the games he lost in 1979 and 1980 that put them in a difficult position come playoff time. He had too much say because he was also the GM.
