I actually always liked the idea that Bruce wouldn’t fight Superman once he realised that he has a mother. Up until this point in the movie he’d conceptualised Superman as an alien, completely foreign to earth and humanity, and thus as a potential threat like the other kryptonians. Hearing him beg a man trying to murder him for him to save his mother shatters that illusion, and makes him see the humanity in Superman
But why the hell would Batman, the world's greatest detective who spent 16 MONTHS studying every aspect of Superman in order to find a way to beat him, NOT know his Mother's name? "Because he didn't care to learn", he'd have to go out of his way not to find it out even by accident if he spent 16 months studying him. It makes no sense.
@@Peter_Pans_Labyrinth Because he’s studying Superman, not Clark Kent. This comment assumes he put together who his secret identity was, which isn’t implied at all in the movie
@@lucillefrancois150 which is moronic. A guy with an alter-ego couldn't figure out that his target is another alter-ego guy?
I would’ve liked it better had Batman already heard Superman say “I need to save my mother.” Because it doesn’t actually get through to Bruce until he’s brought back to HIS mother’s death. The “Martha” is important

So tired of this joke
it’s actually pretty sad how Superman knew he was dead already, he just accepted and said idc just save my mom
That's the reason Bruce didn't kill him. He knew that he could, but 1) he wouldn't be killing a god or a man, he'd be killing a boy afraid for his mother and 2) Bruce lost his mom Martha, murdered by a criminal. Killing Superman would leave his mom Martha without a son, murdered by a criminal.
@@BlackBirds93 for no reason at all, to boot.

@@DavidNicholson101 EXACTLY.
@@Rocketman9mm Superman never really thought he would be beat by a human so this was a surprising desperate attempt by him
I think with better execution, this scene would've been one of the greatest Batman moments in cinema. The realization that he's becoming Joe Chill, the realization that he's separating an innocent boy from his mother, the realization that he's defying everything he stood for as the batman, finally breaks him from within. Essentially, this scene should've marked the rebirth of the DCEU's Dark Knight.
I like how many people try to give novel level explanations as to how the scene functions when dumb is a single word adjective that can be used to describe the hilarious scene in front of me.
@@davidlanceescandor1310 Well, yeah, that's because "dumb" is a vague term, and they are describing it with specificity. If they wanted to be as vague as you, they might call it "good" which is also a single word that describes the scene.
This is a basic characteristic of language, and you should have been made aware of it in your early composition classes, but based on the fact that you redundantly describe an adjective as being a "single word" despite the fact that a single word is what an adjective is, I'm guessing those classes were not your forte.
Interestingly enough, if I had to choose a "single word adjective" to describe your comment, I might choose the same one you chose for the scene.
@@corphish129 Dumb is the word I'd use because of how unearned, stupid and downright hilarious why the fight ended like this. Not to mention that Superman uses a pronoun game and not full explain the situation calmly and he goes for the "he" and "you dont understand" while being passive aggressive. You can make a "poignant" analysis of the situation but it still is dumb how it all played out.
Man, I hate that scene. You don't even know how much. But I respect and do agree with your sentiment. Thing is, it feels like they worked on the what, not the how. Everything surrounding and leading up to that scene just made it weirdly incoherent.
If it were any other director( not Zack Snyder) it would have landed better and had a better set up.. but Zack Snyder isn't a great director, he's a great cinematographer...
I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes as Batman flashes back and gradually decides to abandon his murderous scheme. The music, visuals, editing and acting are all right on point.

Few things about this scene
1. I never understood the hate this scene gets, after my mother passed I didn't hear her name until about 7 years after from a random person, and when I heard it I was just out of it for a few moments like everything thats ever happen to me since then just played back in my mind in an instant. I can only imagine the adrenaline batman is feeling here especially after taking a beating from the man of steel and everything. I would be completly out of it too if I were in the same situation.
2. I love how Batman's reaction after stepping back and realizing hes become the villain, about to take away the son of a mother. In this one scene we see what Christian Bale meant when he said you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain. It took superman to bring this batman back to his rule of no killing and to stop being so violent. I love this movie it will forever be my favorite
Because 1) the whole fight is for an idiotic behavior and solves by a coincidence. they could have just talked it though, no mother name thing, just “hey they made me do it. So all a
Mis understanding solved by a vague coincidence ?
2) 90% of the whole fight scene has no point. Batman could have had him with the lance right after the first krypto gas shot but wait, prefer to beat the shit out of him, allowing to be countered when Superman recovers a bit, then had to do it all over again, then oh wait, let’s beat him again while he’s already down. And oh, there’s a lance here. I could use this. Even without the lance why just punching Superman while he could have gone for something more lethal.
3) does he find the lance by coincidence but has no other means to kill Superman? Then why would he get into the fight in the first place with all this strategy if it’s not a winning one?
So that all seems like a ridiculous excuse to have them fight for 5 minutes
@@gduquesnay in reply to your 1 read my first comment again, if you still dont get it then just drop it. I have no experience in film or anything but if you watch the movie you can see when Wayne is in metropolis and looks up at superman he is taking all of the worlds hate for superman on his own shoulders. Batman is already set on killing superman before the whole "they made me" shit even happens so its not a coincidence you just didn't catch the beats of the movie.
2. There is multiple reasons you're wrong. The fight this is most based off of, batman is making a statement to superman that with the right prep he can beat him. Secondly batman uses all the shit he does before the kryptonite grenade and spear to lower Superman's guard, hence why we see him deal with them so easily. That's why when he catches the grenade his confidence literally blows up in his face. Third if he went straight at him with the spear superman would figure out whatever he has makes him weaker and then batman would lose his shot at him. Like i said batman took on all of humanitys hatred for superman in the beginning if the movie, so beating superman the way he did was to prove a point that man was superior. A little unnecessary? Sure but a lot more badass than whatever movie you would make. Lastly you're watching this film as a critic out for negatives, if you cant follow simple dc mythos (batman using his brain to win, superman being able to squish batman any moment he wants but doesnt because of his character, Batman's planning and prep abilities) why bother watching at all?
@@rob6912 my point was not to convinced you. You said you didn’t understand the hate, so I gave you the points that come up. I never meant you have to adhere to it

“WHY DID YOU CALL YOUR MOTHER BY HER FIRST NAME!”
What are you talking about?
Yeah its disrespectful
Dezzyx you call her mother or mum (though Superman knew he was gonna die and saying save mum wasn’t gonna help him get to her it’s still kinda weird)
Probably because the whole time Bruce was under the impression that Superman was an alien with an alien family and wouldn't have fathomed that he's actually a guy who grew up in middle America with a human family.
Oh, and he's also a stranger. You ask a stranger where "your mom" is, the first question is gonna be "what's your mom's name."
Maybe superman does n't want to reveal his identity..that is Clark Kent..so that is why he was telling him to save Martha..
Martha won't die tonight. Such beautiful words
Seeing this for the third time gave me chills, how the music settles in, how the scene plays out, and batman 10 second realization of what he was about to do or become is just great. I had no problem with this scene upon my first watch but it is now one of my favourite scenes in Snyder's DCEU

Kevin Rodríguez how is it not?
That true
Batman's reaction to his mother's name actually makes a whole lot of sense when you realise it is probably a trigger word for his ptsd, seeing as it's the last thing he heard as his parents bled out in front of him...
Nice catch
I just caught it in this very moment 🤯
@kavikiru kavikiru well...Batman lost his parents man...at a very young age...shot to death infront of him...that must be very hard for anyone...
@kavikiru kavikiru and obviously throughout the movie they've mentioned and SHOWED how the death of his parents affected him..Bruce was shown taking antidepressants, weird dreams, and in the end when someone who he never even bothered about was being cared by A woman running in to the scene...Martha is the trigger word for his PTSD,since that was the last word he heard his dad utter, Overall he realises that superman is just another child helpless to save his mother... He realises that he's about to become the very thing he wanted to fight against.
@kavikiru kavikiru He was beating the enemies up in the next scene without holding back because like superman said there was no time, and even then he knocked most of them out, the only ones you could say died were the ones who's grenade exploded on themselves lmao. And this movie is set at a time where robin died at the hands of the joker so Bruce is very emotionally vulnerable compared to before. And he didn't "change his heart" when he found out about supermans mother, he realized he was being manipulated by Lex, and that superman is more human than he thought he was when Superman was worried about his mother's safety too. The doomsday and darkseid example is stupid because they dont express human emotions like superman does, is that really that hard to understand?
After years of judging this scene…for the first time I actually almost cried watching it

This scene is very important, since Batman sees Superman, as an alien, who could not have a normal life and that he has the same name as his dead mother, allows him to see the "Humanity" that he did not see.
Before this scene Batman says to superman "I bet you had parents that taught you that you meant something. That you came here for a reason. " batman has already humanized him. But he doesn't care.
Also there's news footage of superman saving Ppl. Doesn't that put him in a positive light?
It would make sense if Batman has his No Kill rule in this movie. It would show Batman is willing to kill Superman, because he sees him as a monster. Superman becoming a human in Batman's eyes would mean his No Kill rule would apply and he can not bring himself to killing Superman anymore.
But Batman kills a lot of criminals in the movie, so it makes no difference if Batman sees Superman as a human or a monster.
If batman would've use his detective skill he'll figureout that superman is clark and his mother is martha.... such a fucked up snyder film
Yeah nothing says "normal human" like calling your mother by her first name in your dying moments 🙄
Batman: "Keep...my mama's name... out your f*ckin' mouth!"
I get the joke but I see what Snyder was doing. Bruce saw that if he killed Clark, not only would Martha die, but he would in turn be ripping apart a family the same way that mugger ripped apart his.
Murdoch Quintland Rochefeller
Actually remember an earlier scene in the movie where Bruce thought he went to his parents grave and saw blood leaking from a bat monster.
I think it was his conscience telling him that initially he became batman to destroy the crime in the city which killed his parents ( Thomas and Martha), but now he has become a monster. Bruce just took it as a bad dream.
When Clark told him to "save Martha", Bruce was reminded of the same fatality which occured to him , however this time he was in the killers shoes and Clark was the Young Bruce wayne.

When Superman tells him to save Martha, he assumes it may be a taunt of some kind so he gets infuriated. Lois barges in reminding him that Superman has a mother, a human mother. He is disgusted with himself and throws away the spear. I feel the movie would’ve worked better if Batman didn’t kill
I don't know why people make so much fun of this scene. Whether you are a god or a dillusional human being. At the end you always care for your mom...
People make fun of this scene because of bad execution.
it's a nice concept, but the way it was executed had some sillyness that kills quite a bit of the potential
What Superman fans thought: Save Superman’s mother
What Batman fans thought he meant: Martha is dead
What the people in the theater thought: what the fuck is happening?

"I'll make you a promise, Martha won't die tonight." Batman was, in part, talking to himself in that moment. Memories need closure, especially bad ones. He was promising himself that he would come to terms with his past.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I personally think this scene is very touching
Lol
Yes. Same
You mean it touches your penis in a pleasure driven way
Its terrible writing
It's only touching in the way that people were touching other things during it. Not emotionally touching.
I don't understand why Superman said "Martha" instead "my mom" or "an innocent woman"
Because batman would've been like "your parents are dead" or something like that.
@@brianszitas562 Then "an innocent woman" works better instead of calling a hostage by his name like Batman knows who she is
@Mythical History Again batman would've been like "you killed more innocent people in your fight" and still killed him.
@@brianszitas562 Nah I don't think he would've been like that....Imagine yourself as Superman in that situation. Your mom is in danger. And you know the guy trying to kill you is a good person who saves innocent people. What would you say to him that would make him help you save your mom? Would your tell him to save *insert your mom's name* ?
Because it's a very forced scene.

Imagine how much more better and impact full this scene would have been if batman never had killed in this movie
This is the first time he's about to take a life
About to break his one rule
Brake the one thing he stood against so he wouldn't become the same as his parents murderer
Then the word "Martha"
Flashbacks to the reason he doenst kill
Realisation on what he's about to do
The fact that he *does* have a mom helps him realise that Clark may not be human blooded but he is just as human if not more so than Bruce himself
He throws away the spear at disgust on what he could have become
that'd be so much more powerful
That's the only reason I find Zack lacking of
But he doesn’t kill anyone in this movie???

0:41 I can see pain on Superman's face, but not fear...not fear
People like to laugh at Batman's reaction to Superman saying "You're letting him kill Martha" and " Save Martha". But they seem to forget that the reason Bruce became Batman is because he never moved on from his parent's death. Of course sparking the trauma will set something off in him. It's part of him. It reminds him of his helplessness when he couldn't save her as a child. His reaction is perfectly done by Affleck. Props.
Finally someone who understands this instead of thinking about it for as long as 4 seconds. like wtf.
IF you notice you can see tears on Batman's face when he says Martha won't die tonight. That show how great actor Affleck is !
You can see on his mask one side with the Bat and one side of Bruce Wayne symbolizing that he was about to cross the line like Harvey Dent did. the irony of preventing one from going bad when he himself was becoming the one thing he feared
You guys blew my mind holy shit
Its still based on a coincidence and is contradicted with other stuff?

Yes, his 192 iq is very useful. Yes very useful
Batman:WHY DID U SAY THAT NAME!
Supermans gf:ITS HIS MOTHERS NAME
Batman:Were friends now
the name Martha is just a trigger for ptsd for Bruce, but i also think with hearing the name of his mother also calms him down a slight bit. I do think its the line from Lois "its his mothers name" that really connects to Bruce that makes him Humanize Superman.
Can we all just agree that, regardless of what you think of this scene itself, the music is absolutely stunning.
Music is top tier. Intense action & emotion.
Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL always give out there best in composing musics!! Having Hans Zimmer has been the best part for DC

Martha. Why did you say that name?

batman was like:keep my mom’s name out your fckng mouse
I understand why Batman stopped, “Martha” is a trigger for his PTSD from when his parents were killed, & he stops because he doesn’t wanna become the man who killed & ruined his life, the only thing is I wish they went about this differently just cause the idea of calling your own mom by her name is just a little random
Not really tho since Superman wanted Batman to know who to save in his dying breath. And also to state about the fact that another human’s life is also in danger. If he kills Superman, he’s letting someone kill another person. Batman himself said he doesn’t care about Superman or his parents (probably thinking that they are also aliens since he said “I bet your parents taught you that you mean something, that you’re here for a reason,” he didn’t say “you were sent here for a reason”)
@@ivanduck77-gamesandvideore55 Except Batman didn’t know who Superman’s mother was at that time. So it wouldn’t have made a difference whether Superman mentioned his mother by her name or not if she didn’t have the same name as Batman’s mother.
