you really don't need to charge your dead battery first for several minutes. You basically use donor car for starting the engine of your car and from that moment, your car charges your battery (except modern "smart" cars need more driving/ braking for charging)

It depends on how dead the battery is. Often it is necessary to get sufficient current to start the car. It also reduces the load on the dead car's charging circuit and reduces voltage fluctuations to the electronics.
