    Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74 (1811)
    1. Allegro (0:00)
    2. Romanze. Andante con moto (8:12)
    3. Alla Polacca (14:56)
    Walter Boeykens, clarinet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic conducted by James Conlon
    Description by James Leonard
    Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed his Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74, in 1811 immediately after his Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, and his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in E flat major, Op. 26. Like the earlier works, Weber wrote his Concerto No. 2 for clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Joseph Baermann and the work displays a thorough knowledge of the capacities of the instrument. After the most dramatic Concerto in F minor, the Concerto in E flat major revisits the more lighter and more lyrical world of the Concertino in E flat. Set in three movements, the Concerto in E flat opens with a virtuosic Allegro, moves through a gloriously bel canto Andante Romanza, and closes with a playful Alla Polacca. As in all his orchestral works, Weber's mastery of color and tone is complete and his writing for the soloist is breathtakingly difficult but wholly idiomatic.

    Io sono un clarinettista italiano. Sto studiando presso un Conservatorio del Sud Italia. Conosco vari concerti per clarinetto e orchestra, ma nessuno può superare la bellezza e la raffinatezza che ha questo concerto di Weber. In particolare, nel II tempo cioè la Romanza, è l'apoteosi della purezza e delicatezza che, secondo me, si può avere in un concerto per Clarinetto. Non tanto per il parte di Clarinetto, ma per l'orchestra che risponde al min. 9:36 Spero di non eseguirlo mai questo Concerto, così con l'orchestra perché dal minuto 9:36 di emozione ne avrò tanta!

    This is a recording all woodwindplayers shuld listen to.Why? Mr.Boeykens playes very mutch in the same stile as the great english clarinettplayers from 1925 to ca.1975. That meens singing in the clarinett and make it beutifull. Thank You Mr.Boeykens you have given me happiness back after many yours listning to stiff strait and boring clarinett sound. Ce Deuxième concerto pour clarinette de Weber ressemble à la transcription pour orchestre et soliste d'un opéra de Rossini. Finale enjouée comme une ouverture de Rossini. Mouvement lent un peu mièvre mais à la fin très dramatique, avec récitatif. Mouvement initial mozartien. Comme Schubert, Weber fait parfois beaucoup avec peu, ce qui fait de lui un post classique autant qu'un préromantique !

    Best interpretation of the piece I've heard so far- is that some vibrato I hear in the slow movement 13:48 ? I know clarinettists aren't supposed to but you can only characterize whole notes so much using dynamic contrast so I liked it. Would be interested to hear other clarinettists' opinions.

    • @manswine7735
      @manswine7735 3 роки тому +3

      There is no reason clarinetists can't use vibrato if they prefer to. If you're at this guy's level of technical and musical prowess, who cares? Vibrate away!
