Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74 (1811)
1. Allegro (0:00)
2. Romanze. Andante con moto (8:12)
3. Alla Polacca (14:56)
Walter Boeykens, clarinet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic conducted by James Conlon
Description by James Leonard
Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed his Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74, in 1811 immediately after his Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, and his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in E flat major, Op. 26. Like the earlier works, Weber wrote his Concerto No. 2 for clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Joseph Baermann and the work displays a thorough knowledge of the capacities of the instrument. After the most dramatic Concerto in F minor, the Concerto in E flat major revisits the more lighter and more lyrical world of the Concertino in E flat. Set in three movements, the Concerto in E flat opens with a virtuosic Allegro, moves through a gloriously bel canto Andante Romanza, and closes with a playful Alla Polacca. As in all his orchestral works, Weber's mastery of color and tone is complete and his writing for the soloist is breathtakingly difficult but wholly idiomatic.
With firmness, clear articulation, beautiful sonority.
I LOVE this concerto, this performance & the clarinet!
Najlepsze wykonanie,tempo artykulacja,dźwięk.
So wonderfully virtuosic and life-affirming, especially towards the end of the Rondo
Every day here, every day clarinet and more in general every day Music! I Love this world and I will not quit music, never.
Amazing soloist!

The second movement is mesmerizing! I was glued on my chair, wanting to know what would happen.
What a perfect performance! Absolutely incredible expertise
Weber is too underrated in my opinion. He died too young but he was an unique composer and he was one of the only who paid a lot of attention to the clarinet.
The clarinet is one of the most treasured instruments in the western world. I seriously recommend checking out talented orchestrators and 20-21st century composers
We're playing this beautiful piece in my class. It was stuck in my head, so I looked for it!
Had a few lessons with Walter Boeykens, a fabulous teacher. RIP.
How's the lesson
He is a great person and musician! I was lucky to study with him at the Musica Mundi summer school. Though we didn’t have many lessons, he taught me a lot about music and ensemble!
So beautiful clear arriculaition, full sound, dynamics and filling
In awe all along this marvelous Concerto. Thank you for this gem!
20:10 is where the good stuff is.
Thanks devil.
That part.... ah my god heaven in my ears
wasnt ready for those sextuplets
the tone is flawless 😫
Thanks for uploading!
Excellent playing👏👏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇺🇸
I used to play this years and years ago. Nice to go back a memory line.
Simply brilliant.
This is my favorite version of my favorite Weber clarinet piece: he makes the clarinetist hit the highest and lowest notes immediately and then throughout the piece. Very challenging!
I wonder why Boeykens chose not to play the little turn during the first recapitulation of the theme??
Magnificent.
Amazing!
Such a fantastic piece of music!
Große Klasse !
I had to play a bunch of excerpts from this for districts my freshman year,,, I'm honestly thinking about using some part of it for my audition to a musical school once my senior year come around. it was so fun to play after a few weeks of practice
Bellissimo,Grande Weber era un genio
F3nk Tm vero
Kind of reminds me of the Krommer's E-flat clarinet concerto. This is a very nice concerto alongside his first! Both are very enjoyable, quality works
I played Mozart firstz then this. I thought this was Mozart on Steroids. Then I played Krommer, and thought it was a fusion between the two.
This is a recording all woodwindplayers shuld listen to.Why? Mr.Boeykens playes very mutch in the same stile as the great english clarinettplayers from 1925 to ca.1975. That meens singing in the clarinett and make it beutifull. Thank You Mr.Boeykens you have given me happiness back after many yours listning to stiff strait and boring clarinett sound. From my heart….
Bravo !!
Superb :)
Perfect
Grande y genio!!!
I'm playing the first movement for All-State!
how did it go? It's my all state piece this coming year
Rebecca Murray Same! Do you live in Massachusetts? (I’m going to be a freshman next year)
Well actually, because of coronavirus, All-State got cancelled in Ohio. :(
@@brandonli9675 yeah I do!! I'm in the southeastern mass district!
@@brandonli9675 im a sophmore and actually auditioned this past year also but missed by 10 points :(. When ur band director makes you practice sight-reading you should probably do what they say because I didn't
Magnifique musique.
J adore

very amazing song, it makes my hearts feel relax
From 12:33 to somewhere close to the end is my audition piece for honor band and it sounds cool
i have to learn this!!!!!
All parts are good!
Wagner's mentor. Incomparable composer. Thank you for posting.
I know what you are talking about but Weber did not directly teach Wagner
@@ruicosta6342 Who's talking about teaching, in the face to face sense? We're discussing influence. Wagner, as a conductor in Paris, memorized Weber's scores.
I've been assigned this as an 8th grader and I can already feel my impending doom ;-;
good luck lmao
🥰😍😀😍🤩 ....mais que c’est donc beau.....
Best interpretation of the piece I've heard so far- is that some vibrato I hear in the slow movement 13:48 ? I know clarinettists aren't supposed to but you can only characterize whole notes so much using dynamic contrast so I liked it. Would be interested to hear other clarinettists' opinions.
There is no reason clarinetists can't use vibrato if they prefer to. If you're at this guy's level of technical and musical prowess, who cares? Vibrate away!
Yes, perfect dictation, clarity and more ; Scientifically played :)
I have the music to some of this- they gave it to us whenever we were in 8TH GRADE for a playing test xD I love this song
King George IiI who would give an insane piece like this to 8th graders
I’m playing this and I’m 12 lmao.
PulseBeat_02 good luck
Thx
Have to play this piece this Friday. Hope I get gold. I just need to manage to tounge the super high notes 4-5 lines before and I finally master this piece.
Ayeeee lit
Best composer ever existed together with Mozart. Wonderfull music, profound and powerfull.
