Even after 17 years, the Harrier attack on the bridge genuinely has moments I have no idea if I’m looking at model work or full scale action. Brilliant!
True Lies is possibly the pinnacle of miniature SFX model work. There's so much hyper realistic miniature work in this film that the audience can't pick. Sadly from here on digital effects started to take command of big budget special effect sequences.
I remember back in the day when i went to the cinema to watch 'True Lies' I was told , no idea by who, that the Harrier attack was done using a disused piece of actual road bridge in the Florida Keys and a remote controlled real truck, in the 'part 1' I remember been actually shocked that this was completely wrong and it was all models . I'd held onto that belief for 26 years! Strange thing is knowing now that it was models makes it even more impressive. Keep up these great video's!!
If you go back to the part 1 video, the guy says they needed the model to match the real life shooting they had done days before, so maybe part of the bridge was demolished for real before they did the miniature work?
My manager was in the restaurant scene in 'True Lies'. but this model making... its so amazing. I've made models before, I like fine detail. The fact that what I can do on a 25mm figure, they do in weeks on complete set pieces just blows my mind.
whats cool is seeing them working on the mountain model in a business parking lot! like cars are just driving down the road and they have no idea they are looking at a set piece for a film they will be watching in a few months. :) like star wars -- that scene when they are having the fight with the x wings -- some of that was shot in the parking lot! just fascinating.
Most car commercials use CGI cars now. The clients love it because they can control the look. Same with CGI suits for Marvel actors in the movies. Most people can't tell the difference and it allows the studios to make changes late in production. Is that a good thing? I don't think so since everything feels too perfect now. Younger audiences don't seem to care.
There were some real Marines and Harriers involved in the film, I think. VMA-223 was a real Marine Harrier squadron at the time and I think it's still based in NC.
Probably the only UA-cam channel I watch consistently. These videos are amazing. Thank you.
Thank you! It's really great to hear people enjoy these segments and the information from the model makers. More coming up!
Agreed. Constant solid high quality content for fans of the "movie magic" era.
Same here. The behind the scenes photos used with the interviews makes it so cool.

27 years!
I totally agree with you!!!

Unbelievable simply.
These video's are nice, this sort of record of how these guys shaped movies should be remembered more than they are:)
I hope, that this stories (episodes) will never end! As always, thumb up!
More coming soon!
Love these videos! Love models!
Man seeing your work, you should work in the movies!

Me encanta cuando hacen aviones..se ven tan reales..
Christ, I hope that mountain miniature didn't go to waste. Was it used for anything?

Yes. One of the smaller films Les Ekker and Pat Mcclung worked on at Digital Domain.

The battle between development, design and decision. Fail to plan; plan to fail.
digital performs better ? Majority of the time, it ruins the shot on various levels.

Lies! All lies! I saw the Harrier hanging from a crane in downtown Miami with my own eyes!
That was for the first unit live action with the actors. Some scenes required pyro and miniatures.
