  • If you have a new, deep, raised bed use this method to fill it that is both sustainable and budget friendly. You don't have to fill the entire bed with just soil.

Is this your first time doing this method? You’re going to spend the next 10 years adding expensive soil EVERY year to bring it back up to level. Think about it… what happens to a compost pile as it sits and composts? A ten foot high pile will ultimately compost down to about a two foot height. Those pieces of wood in there will rot away to about a half inch in height. If you want to lessen the need for more dirt every year then pack it in tight! Fill in around the wood with just sim yard dirt. Same after the twigs. And overfill before you add the good stuff. Really! Mound the dirt up over the edges. That way maybe by the end of the season your veggies won’t be a foot below the edge of the container.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do have other raised beds and the idea is for the materials underneath to break down. I will have to add some soil to the top every year as it breaks down.
