  • Even back in 2001, we had matchups between the young gun and the veteran. This matchup was between Veteran Nick Varner and Young(ish) Gun Dennis Hatch at the 26th US Open 9-Ball Championship.
Varner was a two time player of the year in the 80s and was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a back to back US Open 9-Ball winner and the oldest player to ever a WPA World 9-Ball title, at the age of 51.
It was still early in Hatch’s career, but he had multiple top finishes on the Camel Pro Tour in the late 90’s and would go on to represent Team USA five times at the Mosconi Cup.
Jim Rempe and Dave Maddux called this one.

Anybody seen the movie "Mars Attacks?"
Varner with his high forehead looks
like the leader of the little martians
and uses a laser gun rather than a Cuetec...
    ...."I come in peace."

Dennis was UNREAL in the first five games, but then he gave Varner too many chances and......well, you don''t win by giving Varner chances.

It's almost a form of an escape mechanism.
"If I lose, well, I really wasn't focused anyway."
      That's the easy out.
The real tough players focus on the table, the layouts,
then if they lose they actually get ticked off. That's me
and my Behavioral Pysch degree talking, , but also as a player.
I love this game and play $$$ matches.

The worst thing that you could see is when a man keep chewing gum like that during the whole match, chewing gum especially like the way Varner does it look exactly like a goat eating grass, exaaaaaactly and it looks awful especially on TV.
I cannot believe nobody came up to him and asked him not to do it.

Just stop crying. Your boy is sitting down. The best way to get a view of the 2 players is alternate breaking. It's like if a guy is constantly making balls on the break it's not a fluke. Have you ever spent a weeks months shining your break so you can make ball consistently on the break. Go in and just break for 2 hound se how fun it is

@@onepocketnovice there is no way to take fortune out of the game. If a guy is putting in time figuring out how to be better within the rules it's not lessening the game in my opinion. Now I believe in exceptions. The soft 8 ball breaks with pattern racking is not cool. Corey protected it. I'm ok with changing the rules on something like that.
