"My heart on high ... so I ask..." and perhaps "aches" rather than "hex" ??? Who knows? I bought this one on a rare trip to Brixton, London, UK in 1976. I think the shop was Desmond's Hip City. It was playing in the shop very loud and a train literally passed overhead and complemented the vibes, shaking the building. When I asked to buy a copy, the man literally took it off in mid-play & bagged it for me there and then. I also bought Johnny Clarke's "Bring It On Home To Me" on Caribbean label, the same day. I must have played this hundreds of times since. The dub is exemplary. It was a little unfortunate that Don Letts mis-dated the dub to 1968 when he played a portion of it on his BBC Radio Four documentary about King Tubby and the birth of dub, last week - an otherwise quite good programme, I felt. I was deejaying in a small way a year or two before Don and "Punk Rock" and dub was becoming a passion for me. I always believed it was making history, but it seemingly was a very unknown or belittled subject to most British record buyers back then, though John Peel used to play one or two reggae tracks on his show sometimes and London had a reggae radio show airing locally. I lived on bread & cheese for 3 days in Bristol when I spent my food money in Virgin's 2nd hand dept. in 1975, because I'd found a bunch of reggae lp's which included "The Message - Dubwise" by Prince Buster Allstars on Melodisc. It was stolen from my bedsit room a couple of years later as was John Holt Greatest Hits on Melodisc, both of which, I think, are rare as hen's teeth, if any original copies exist at all today. Tragic also because I really took care of them with an eye to history and I believe they went to a gangster who probably trashed them. I learned recently that The Beatles very nearly signed (the now late, R.I.P.) Pat Kelly to their Apple label, but there were allegedly contractual obstacles that weren't overcome. Just imagine if their fans had cottoned on back then!!! So often, babylon lauds truly great artists after they pass on, but fears them whilst they walk the Earth. Peace & Love
Stood along this lonely track Watching the trains speed along Weep, oh, willow weep Let me hear your song So that my soul will be filled with joy My heart and I, it alone knows the hex I bear, so I asked How long, how long will it take me to be your man again? Tell me, sister, oh, how long Listen to me as I try my best not to sigh I still feel the tears on my face I'm hated by you, and you're loved by me Though I can't take it, I try not to break it My heart and I, it alone knows the hex I bear, so I asked How long, how long will it take me to be your man again? Oh, tell me now, how long As I try my best not to sigh I still feel the tears on my face I'm hated by you and you're loved by me Though I can't take it, I try not to break it My heart and I
Thank you! I heard this at one of the first blues sessions that I went to. A family friend even had the 7" single. What i couldn't figure out back then was why all the pat kelly songs called how long were of reggae soulful mix (i like those versions anyway) All i had was a 40 sec burst on a cassette tape of the dub. By the way, my friends single had the dub as long train running for some reason. Thanks again.
so great, this song takes everything away to shift our focus to the space between the notes. It's in the space where the music is made in the mind. but oh my does it go so hard!! bless!
I love this version as well as his original cut. Haven't heard it in it's entirety since 1976. All i had left from those first forays into blues sessions is a 40 sec burst of the dub on a poor cassette tape and fond memories, thanks again
A masterpiece top tune
