MG 3 is a weapon which seems never get be replaced like the M2 Browning, Fact is the MG3 is just a MG42 just rebarreld for the 7.62x51mm nato ammunition instead using the original Mauser 7.92x57mm Mauser rounds

M2 browning and MG42 are some of the most awesome weapons. No wonder their maker using them even long after World War Two.
This and the M2 Browning are basically the epitome of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

You either use a tripod mount (Heavy Machine Gun) or fire 10-12 rounds (~1/2 second) at a time (Light-Medium MG).

I had this MG3 as my standard weapon when I was at the Bundeswehr in the 80´s. Loved it, although I had to carry much more than my comrades... But the fire rate and the precision up to more than 1000 meters are impressing!

i still have a Scar on my thumb from Pushing the rounds int he belts. the meatgrinder-looking loadinggevice never managed to push the round all the way in so i had to push 5000 rounds over 3 days individually the last bit before the Belt locked them right, everytime poking the relatively pointy end of the Belt into the middle of my thumb.
also: hauling that thing around for 3 days, while trying to stay ahead of recruits for Ambushes, recruits who were being pushed extra fast by their instructors, yeah.... fuck that.

I remember gunnery with the German army. I had a hell of time shooting a controlled burst while the German soldiers could squeeze off single rounds. They laughed at me and said it was even adjusted to the low rate of fire for us. The quick change barrel is a idea that 100 years later we still can’t seem to master.
What Machine gun in American Service doesn't have a quick-change barrel?

@@chrissmith7669 M249 and G3 on a bipod are both LMGs and don't change barrels, but the medium MG version of the MG3 and the US equivalent is the M240 which fires the same 7.62x51 NATO round and also has very quick barrel changes at about 10 seconds. The M240 is now issued to a majority of infantry units in the US armed forces, ideally with a tripod mount for better firing stability.
The X250 is set to replace the M249 for the US Army (and the X5 is set to replace the M4), which used the new .277 SIG Fury round at 80k psi chamber pressure (and hybrid steel/brass ammunition casing) for higher accuracy, less bullet drop, and therefore a greater effective range for both the X250 and X5. The newly designed modular NGSW-Optic system with integrated ballistic computer and the weather sensors required for those computations, and a suppressor. This means the plan is for all US Army infantry to have suppressors, along with that new high-tech modular optic, which also has a reflex red-dot sight if I recall correctly as a backup device, and integrated infrared/visible laser so a PEQ laser unit is no longer required to be forward mounted.
If all goes well with this initial ~30k weapon order and initial integration, it will be issued to all front-line troops ASAP. If it gets to that point and they become the M5 and M250, the .277 will likely undergo NATO certification, contracts open up for NATO allies to transition over, and I imagine the USMC will likely replace their M249 limited inventory, as they switched to a hybrid model of the M27 full-auto/semi-auto 5.56 NATO built by HK using the short-stroke gas piston system rather than direct impingement. The same suppressed M27 rifle was first issued to the old SAW gunners, but they expanded that to all USMC riflemen more recently due to better performance over the M4. The reason it's a bit mixed between issuing some M249s still, is the choice of the NCOs and officers for their weapons composition based on the machine, as the M27 is limited to 30-round magazines with 50/100 being explored. It has a heavy barrel and great accuracy at range over the M249 even on full auto. They still have the M240s for medium MGs.

@@stevenewton1126 yes, i shot the MG3, the MG42 is sadly forbiden to use in our military, but we got an old example from the museum to look at it, its way smaller and not so heavy and also can reach higher RPMs
@EVIL DEATH probably, the MG3 even is still a good MG, but till now it gets replaces by the MG5, with a firerate of max 900? or 800? rpm dunno exatlc, its too long ago, we got it as one of the firsts bcs our company is heavy in afghanistan etc. The MG5 is way more precise and can accuratly shoot at way more higher ranges awell.. many say its bad.. Bcs thats not what an MG stands for, back in the day, the rule was ; if an MG shoots, get to freaking cover or youre dead, it was a symbol to actually "spam". the MG5 isnt that at all, the MG42 was the master of it, MG3 was good at it aswell but not as effectivly
@MrElwoodblues83 yeah "less overheat" thats why we got learned to change the barrel every 200 shots, which is nothing on a MG. precise ? probably yes but an MGs rule isnt to be pretty precise. Ich habe den scheiss auch weitaus mehr als 10 mal geschossen, weitaus mehr, es ging mir eher darum das das MG42 kleiner war, weniger wiegt, was es wiederum flexibler macht, ein MG war derzeit nur für unterdrückungsfeuer gedacht.

I was impressed with one young lady, she actually was aiming, using excellent trigger control, firing short bursts...she looked like she meant business and she knew her business.
I shot this machine gun many times in the norwegian army. The 7.62 is horrifyingly devastating - we shot at pig bodies - meat flying everywhere... With 3 round bursts you can actually easily hit the center of a target. Very precise and scary weapon that literally rips a platoon apart in seconds.

This is why Germany lost the war: all the ammo carriers were dropping dead from exhaustion.
We Danish soldiers used them on patrols in Afghanistan. Usually a couple per platoon. One person was carrying the MG and one carrying the ammo. People actually ended up being a couple centimeters lower after deployment from all the weight. The weapon itself though.... usually silences the receiving end of the metal. Loved the sound of that weapon providing suppressing fire!

He was the MG gunner, following the first patrol the squad decided to leave it at home and he just carried the M/95 rifle.

I feel like you people can't appreciate how cool the manufacturer's name is:
the company's name is Rheinmetall.
Metall is metal, obviously.
And Rhein is the river Rhein/Rhine.
BUT
"Rhein" sounds exactly like the German word "rein", which means pure.
So the company name sounds like "PURE METAL!"
And that just makes me giggle every time I hear it.
I feel like a bunch of metalheads should jump out of a corner growling every time someone utters that company name.
The Metalheads in Germany dont say "rein Metal!" they say something like "Das ist so Metal!" wich means "its so metal!"
For us others it sounds like:
"Rain Metal",

Yes that it isn't a translation of that phrase. I just meant that the term "Reinmetall" sounds awesome in German and would translate into the two words pure + metal in English which is even more awesome.

Oh, and funny sidenote: If you pronounce the German phrase "is leer!" (= is empty/it's empty) very quickly it sounds like "s'leer" which sounds like "Slayer"...
So once the cups of beer run dry you'll start hearing the German metalheads scream "SLAYER!!!!"
@@johnschuster9192 yes, 1200rpm it is. It has a little strip of metal inserted in its mechanism (called NATO Bremse/NATO break by the soldiers) to reduce its theoretical cicling speed of 1500rpm.
To reduce the wearing down effect of a high fire rate.
But a good german gunner only uses 2-3 rounds bursts anyways. Everything else is just waste of good ammo 😏

it fired the rounds so fast, the firing rate had to be tuned down, because the barrel got too hot. still shooting really fast. It’s a real pleasure to shoot. Mine had awesome additional adjustable open sights for shooting air raid defenses. You felt a little like Quigley when shooting his sharps :-)

In turkish army i served as user mg3 in 2010, we call it as "Black Snake", my black snake was made in 1984 and we still use mg3, g3, HK

@@johanncruyff143 no we got the mg5 now instead of mg 3 its an awesome gun with 3 fire modes 600 R.per second 720 R per second and 800R. per second the barrel now can stand 360 rounds before it melts also the range is now 1000m instead of 600m
@@johanncruyff143 Bruh. The MG3 is a machine gun and the G36 is an Assault Rifle which is probably going to be replaced in the forseeable future. And the MP57 and MP5 are machine pistols. None of the weapons you listed are going to replace each other as they all have different roles.
I like the mg 3 More than the modern mg5.
The mg 4 was ok, but the mg5 just looks like a bigger version
I qualified for the Schutzenschnur near Germersheim several years back. Their G36 was amazing. Their MG42 kicked my butt because it took talent to control. I’m sure I would have gotten good at it but this was a one time opportunity.
I remember when we had a collab shootin with some US guys as the one said 'Ima machine gunner, you don't have to tell me how to handle it'. The first salvo tought him it is kickback loaded. And he had alot more bullets to go... These guys are doing great

Mg3 has been in service from 1959 to present, improved from the MG42. Rate of fire 1000-1200 per minute, maximum firing range out to 4700 m. same as MG42. The sound of this weapon has haunted every surviving servicemen of the D day landings and the European theatre of World War II.

The MG34 was the better weapon. But the MG42 was designed for mass production - so that every infantery squad could be build up around the MG as a central role.
That changed the infantery warfare in doctrin, as the T34 changed tank warfare.
No flip them around the 42 was more expensive to make and the 34 was made for mass production and was cheaper but probably still more reliable the 34 was more easy to control
It was shooting even faster. One change from MG42 to MG3 was lowering the rate of fire down to 1200....

Loved the thing at the time i served in the army. With a little training you can manage single shots. It was called bone saw in WW2. With sufficient ammunition in your position you can let hell break loose upon attackers. Fortunately i never had to test this but had conversations with veterans about it.

MG42's and MG3's have the same rate of fire, 900, 1,200 or 1,500 rounds per minute depending on which bolt you put in them, that decision is made by the unit commander based on the tactical situation.

I was trained on this weapon in 1992 (end of the Cold War). The parental leave has been reduced over the years (cap and tube). But it is and remains one of the most brutal MG`s in the world. And that's what it was built for. To destroy life. So whoever uses it should be aware of what they are doing!

They would actually be very useful in Urban combat zones and mounted to certain vehicles. The US military could probably get them for dirt cheap and save millions upon millions of defense dollars in the process. The Government already has plenty of 7.62x51mm ammo stockpiled.

That is one gun that is TIMELESS! It still looks like it was just made. To be honest,if I were in a war,that is the gun I would want. They look like they are really enjoying it too. There is so much that can be said about it,it’s just crazy.
it´s an really good weapon about over 50 years. i´ve got shoot a mg3 in 1998 which was made in 1966. firing in short bursts are very accurate and if needed very surpressive in close combat.
I crewed one of these in Afghanistan on a German Truck.
